View Full Version : Favorite Rock Bands

What are your favorite ten artists, who are not named Yes, from this list? The list has a lot of prog-rock super heavyweights, but for fun I tossed in some pop-rockers who leaned progressive at times, and some rock bands that are too darn big to ignore. Don't sweat it if some of your real top favorites are not on the list (and, of course, there is no need to put Yes on the list).
Vote for ten (or less) of these candidates.

On second inspection, I think I should have included Bob Dylan, and maybe Traffic, on the list (though I wouldn't have voted for them myself). God knows there may be other worthy artists I may have forgotten, but those are the two that immediately come to mind....Jimi Hendrix and Deep Purple are not bad ideas, either.

If they were listed as well, I'd have voted for Bob Dylan, John McLaughlin/Mahavishnu Orchestra, Bob Marley & The Wailers,
and Van Der Graaf Generator.
But hey, you can't have been expected to have every great band everyone likes on your list. I picked 10 with no problem.

Yikes!!! It looks like I'm the only Allman Brothers Band supporter here. I'd like to point out a few disclaimers:
1) Allmans ONLY through Eat A Peach
2) U2 ONLY through Achtung Baby and including All That You Can't Leave Behind.
Awesome list, but where's Stevie Ray Vaughan/Double Trouble? Having been fortunate to have seen them twice before SRV's tragic early exit, let me just say that the dude could play a little guitar....
Hey yesskater, I was This close to voting for the Allman Brothers. I still listen to Whipping Post--for those special times--you know, next to suicide---hahaha--just kidding. But there were so many good groups, they got knocked off my list. Allman Brothers put on one heck of a show too.

Zappa has a few versions of WHIPPING POST. My favorite version is in the live video DOES HUMOR BELONG IN MUSIC? . The VHS is not in print, but supposedly a DVD version is in the works. This video, from the 1984 tour, is great fun. WHIPPING POST is one of my favorite parts of the set. Bobby Martin, one of the 2 keyboardists, does a really decent vocal performance here - but the highlight for me is watching FZ play the intense guitar solo.
As far as CD releases of this song...The best version I feel is on THEM OR US. It's from the same line up as in the video above. The other version of this is on the CD called DOES HUMOR BELONG IN MUSIC? - which is NOT the same show as the video of the same title. The HUMOR cd version is a bit sloppier, but is redeemed by having Frank and his son Dweezil playing lead guitar together - Dweezil being only 15 at the time.
The origins of Zappa playing this Allmans classic can be heard on disc 2 of YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON STAGE ANYMORE Volume 2 (recorded 1974). As Frank and The Mothers are about to start MONTANA, a man in the crowd yells "Whipping Post!!!!". Frank said "Whipping Post? We don't know that one. Sing me 'Whipping Post' and maybe we'll be able to play it." The guy in the audience attempts to sing it, but just lets out a sort of howl. The crowd laughs. Frank says "Judging from the sound of that it must be a John Cage composition." And so Frank and the band launch into MONTANA, and Frank changes the words a lot by adding things about whipping posts.

APRIL MADNESS!
I'm detecting a Final Four playoff that will feature Genesis and Pink Floyd as the top seeds. Led Zeppelin and The Beatles are looking good to secure the other two spots--but nothing is a lock, especially if King Crimson, ELP or Rush make a big final push in this preliminary round. The Moody Blues look to have the strongest legs of the longshots that fill out the balance of the pack.
Stay tuned.

When I was growing up I had the Partridge Family as an introduction into rock and roll.Even though the Beatles were everywhere. But "I Woke up in Love This Morning"still rocks! Then came Three Dog Night,Grass Roots and slowly ventured into Deep Purple. That lead to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. My cousin took me to see Deep Purple(with Tommy Bolin on guitar)He turned me onto Floyd and some wacky substance. And we had some free college stations around the Washington D.C.area.Here one could listen to new bands like ELP and Genesis.A high school pal turned me onto Fragile and the need for more.I picked U2 because I remember hearing a NYC college station playing something from October. But they basically haven't done anything since Joshua Tree. And I thought I was the only YES and Zappa fan.Oh I have company.Listen to Inca Roads on One Size Fits All too hear a little progressive music.JOE

mrgone3: Funny you mention Three Dog Night. Several months ago I bought a used double CD "Best of" collection of the group, and I could barely play anything else on my stereo for weeks after. Great singers. Great musicians. Didn't write their own songs, which really hurt them as far as FM rock radio was concerned.
I now like late 60's/early 70's pop (along with classic progressive--go figure?). I appreciate it more now than ever before. Seems to me the music produced in those days gets better with age. Hard to say that will be the case with today's music. Yeah I know I'm starting to sound like an old fogey, but I'm just telling like it is, IMHO. And U2 is the best of the current bunch, for whatever that is worth (then again, U2 has been around almost 25 years). But Yes trumps them anyway.
So maybe it is best stated that Yes is the best of the current bunch AND the old bunch. Just look at the list above and see how few are still producing new music. We Yes fans are a fortunate lot to enjoy such a enduring and prolific top quality band.
______
On another topic: My apologies to Peter Gabriel fans (myself among them) for overlooking his strong showing when I did that silly "April Madness" recap a couple posts back. Mr. Gabriel is looking suprisingly strong to sneak into the Final Four as a sleeper.

It is convenient that the Yes CDs aren't far from the Zappa CDs in the store. INCA ROADS is wonderful. If anyone loves Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return To Forever - INCA ROADS will entertain you. The version on ONE SIZE FITS ALL is probably the best technically, but I for one prefer the version on YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON STAGE ANYMORE Volume 2 (The Helsinki Concert). The ONE SIZE FITS ALL version is a composite of a brilliant studio recording and a live guitar solo edited in. The live guitar solo is from the version on the Helsinki Concert, albeit in edited form. I like the live Helsinki version more because of the unedited guitar solo - and the brilliant live with no overdubs performance of this tricky piece. George Duke's keyboard solo is a little better on the studio version, however. A third version of INCA ROADS, although not as good as the two previous versions, is also worth checking out. It's on THE BEST BAND YOU NEVER HEARD IN YOUR LIFE, taped on the 1988 "big band" tour. Is Zappa's jazz fusion a parody, or the real thing? In any case, it's some of his most compelling work. Those who may wish to explore the jazz fusion aspect of Zappa might be interested in these CDs.:
UNCLE MEAT
HOT RATS
BURNT WEENY SANDWICH
THE GRAND WAZOO
WAKA/JAWAKA
OVER-NITE SENSATION
ROXY & ELSEWHERE
YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON STAGE ANYMORE-Volume 2
Other albums have a few jazz fusion moments, but these 8 albums lean more in that direction than any others.

Looks like Genesis and Pink Floyd are locks for the final four round. The Beatles are looking good to get the third seed going forward. But there appears to be a dogfight for the final slot between Led Zeppelin and Peter Gabriel, with ELP making a strong late push. If you haven't voted yet, then do so now. The makeup of the next round can hinge on YOUR votes in this round, things are that close! (By the way, in the next round you will only be able to vote for one candidate.)
Just keep in mind if you are a Peter Gabriel/Genesis fan, like myself, and if Peter Gabriel makes it to the next round, then he and Genesis could split their common constituency thereby throwing the title of "Yes Fans Favorite Other Band" to neither. They call it "cannibalism" in the world of politics. Crazy as it sounds, if you are a Peter Gabriel/Genesis fan you might want to abstain from voting for Mr. Gabriel in this round. This way you can help insure Genesis has a undivided base in the next round.
How about :
Flower Kings
California Guitar Trio
Tony Levin Band
Shadow Gallery
Porcupine Tree

Not that you all have to be interested in this, anyway:
I looked at my all-time favorite album ranking and noticed some of my fav bands are missing. Most notably (as others have mentioned) Van der Graaf Generator (those guys have 2 slots in my all-time album top ten, with Still Life and Pawn Hearts). Also Gong and Soft Machine are greatly missed and, despite the likely "bleah" from most of you, Iron Maiden (check Somewhere in Time and 7th Son you prog-rockers!)
Anyway, I voted... Genesis, Gentle Giant, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, ELP, Beatles, Rush, Floyd, Jethro Tull and another one I can't remember now (not in that order)
WK
You're right about the bleah for Iron Maiden, White Knight! hahaha! The rest of your taste is impeccable though! So happy to see you visiting us more regularly again!
I could only bring my list up to eight:
Beach Boys
Beatles
Gabriel
Genesis
Gentle Giant
Jethro Tull
Led Zeppelin
Queen
After that there would be a gap, and then there would be several more not quite so essential...

Absolutely agree with this choice! OCS is a band who should have made it bigger than either Oasis or the overrated Strokes in this country, if there was justice in the world. Best band to come from Britain in a long time, with the exception of Kula Shaker (I wish they hadn't broken up; I saw them do a concert on the day after my birthday a few years ago, and it would rank high on my list of all-time favorite concerts).

I voted for The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, U2, The Velvet Underground and Neil Young.
Just being honest! I would have had others on the poll, but some are obscure...
Wow! A bit of history. My dad loved John Coltrane, Duke Ellington and Jazz vocalist of the late 40's & 50's. In Jr High School I had older musician friends in the school band and neighborhood bands in 69. They all played brass intruments, so we were really into Sly & the Family Stone and early early Kool & the Gang, when they were Progressive R&B Jazz. Chicago (Transit Authority) were another horn group who really jammed in the post psychedelic rock era. We soon began listening to the icons of the day: Funkadelic, Clapton, Hendrix, Doors, Stones, Santana, T.Rex, Zep & Zappa. Early Van der Graaf Generator, Pink Floyd and YES really got me into progressive rock. I had already begun developing a taste for Miles Davis and early Jazz-Rock. In time Genesis, PFM, Gientle Giant, King Crimson, ELP, Mahavishnu, Joni Mitchell, CSNY became high priorities as well. It easier for me to rate my choices in terms of the genre.
R & Roll -----Beatles/Stones
Blues Rock--Hendrix/Clapton
Psychedlic--Jefferson Airplane
Folk Rock---Joni Mitchel/CSNY
Hard Rock--Led Zeppelin
Glam Rock--Roxy Music/D.Bowie
Prog Rock--YES, KC, Genesis
Jazz Rock-- Mahavishnu/Miles
Fusion------Brand X
Experimental--Zappa
Funk Rock---Funkadelic/Sly Stone
R&B----------James Brown
New Wav--Talking Heads/Police
Punk Rock---Sex Pistols

ROCK..hmmm, I would have to say Zep is up there with my favorite rock but rock in Detroit is much more metal which is what I grew up on and what my ear gravitates towards. Screaming guitars...thinking of Van Halen with David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar by himself, Metallica five years ago (but they did kick it at the MTV awards) Ted Nugent just all over the place, but I have to say Led Zep does it for me. "Rock & Roll" could still get me to do what I did in 81 on Hines Drive.... cruising down Hines in the summer with my friends drop top, me sitting on the back with some freinds and that jam came on and off came our shirts...ah, it was all benign, we had our bras on. But we LOVE to shimmy.

At first glance, yeah, it would seem to be, but with "Dark Side of the Moon," Pink Floyd had an album that stayed on the charts longer than any other album, even any of the Beatles' albums. The fact that both Floyd and Genesis could be touring, but aren't, might have something to do with it. Paul and Ringo could get together with some other blokes and call it the Beatles (although I think they'd have to get permission from Yoko and the Harrison estate), but it wouldn't really be. Also, maybe the Beatles lost some ground because of "Free As a Bird." Only the Yesfans voters know for sure.

The current poll results indicate that if Yes were to tour with Pink Floyd, chances are that many Yes fans would be happy with that arrangement.

Geez, only 10! That's tough! I picked 10, then revised, then revised again. Most of these bands are a lot of fun to listen to. I'd bet you could vote this a couple or three times and make different lists, I know I could.
Thanks for putting this up, it's fun to see how others here think of these groups.

Prog-Rock seems to be a definite brand for some bands of the 70s, that - apart from Yes and King Crimson - haven't progressed at all since the recent 25-28 or so years, like ELP, Pink Floyd and Genesis. And then there are those neo-prog-bands like Spocks Beard, the Flower Kings or Transatlantic, who are not progressive at all for my taste. They just celebrate the music of Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant and stuff. I find this music not very thrilling.
In contrast Musicians like David Bowie, Zappa, King Crimson and Yes always really progressed their music. New Progressive Bands might be Radiohead or Mouse On Mars (german electronic project, quite well known in Europe and Japan). And let's not forget the wonderful Beach Boys/Brian Wilson, just saw a Brian Wilson-show in Bonn, performing the grand Smile-album and more stuff. Wow, what a joy, what challenging music.
Well, my momentary top-ten-list of favourite Rock-Bands and Rock-Musicians besides Yes is like this.
1: XTC (wonderful british experimental pop/folk/pychedelic/Jazz and more-mix)
2: Pearl Jam
3: Van Morrison
4: Steely Dan
5: Elvis Costello
6: Brian Eno
7: Kraftwerk
8: King Crimson (the version drom 1981 until now)
9: Miles Davis
10: Neil Young

Good to read, that there is someone else here, who sees the greatness of XTC. They are - almost like Yes - a musical universe. Well, Can is something really beautiful and progressive as well. Some month ago, I had the pleasure to interview Holger Czukay, it was two hours of me smiling. Well, Utopia I always liked too.

Paulovajao, no, it is not abusing at all, but unfortunately there does not exist an acoustic version of this interview, it was made for a newspaper, and I just wrote his answers down on paper. Well, for example he talked about his concept of making music, which is rooted in the early Can-music. He said: "We tried to forget everything we knew about music. We took over intsruments, that we new only vaguely and just went off playing. We learned quickly, that every wrong note is kind of a new and fresh note. We were not feared to play many "Wrong" notes."
He also talked about his newer projects. He will do music with Flea from the Chilli Peppers and Damon Albarn from Blur, everyone will be in his own studio, and they will jam online. On his recent US-tour Holger jammed with some of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers musicians. Another project was, to encourage poeple from allover the world via his website to send music online, and he combined this stuff - from Japan, Australia, Russia and more countries - with his own music and made a long piece out of that. Well, there was more, and as HC is a very funny guy, I laughed a lot.
Yes, Oranges and Lemons is one of my favourite XTC albums, well, there are so many, Skylarking, Nonesuch, English Settlement..., ok, I don't have to tell you. It is such a great band. A shame that they kicked out Dave Gregory, though.
Greetings

Fantastic, I never had the chance to see Can live, was too young then. Must have been a great experience. I saw Holger twice in Cologne, in the 80s with Michael Karoli, Jacki Liebezeit and Jah Wobble, and in 1999, when Can did their solo-projects, every member performed solo with a band or guest musicians, but they did not play together.

It would be imposible to include all bands/artists - but one of my favorite bands was Badfinger. Those guys wrote some great songs - every time. Pete Hamm and Tom Evans hung themselves years ago. What a shame! I miss them.
