Does anyone know how Yes came up with 90125 as the title for this album?

I always thought it was a zip code but I didn't ever look it up.

Yes it's the plain old catalog number.

I used to see the TV show Beverly Hills 90210 and call it Beverly Hills 90125. :lmao:

When it first came out, on vinyl of course, I sat there with pencil and paper trying to decipher the "secret code" that led to the magical sequence 9-0-1-2-5. Number of previous albums each member played on... number of vowels, consonants, whatever... nothing worked. Then my roommate walked in, turned the record jacket over and pointed to the UPC in the corner. Below the bars was a numeric sequence ending in "-90125".

So if the title comes from the UPC code, then the UPC code was assigned to the product before it had a title in the first place. Makes me think of chickens and eggs, which, in turn, makes me hungry. But I would not give you false hope, on this strange and mournful day.

The band probably figured what the heck and went with the catalog number.

"The album was named after the catalogue number but the original working title was "The New Yes Album". Eventually this was abandoned after much discussion and it was decided to be very minimalistic and use what was expected to be the album's allocated catalogue number. Even this simple idea led to complications. Says Phil (Carson) "Funnily enough the number was NOT 90125. For some reason we got a different number. Then there was another mistake made. They'fd given the number we wanted to another band. I had this bizarre conversation with Chris Squire. We were going to call it90104. We couldn't use that so it had to be 90125. He said he didnt like that and he was dead serious. He said it was not as good as 90104 As if it made a fu*king bit of difference!"

I'm glad Phil got his way, 90104 doesn't have the same catchy cadence that 90125 has.
