I was listening to "And You And I" the other day, first time in a while. I have been wondering for a while about these "underwater words/lyrics" that I hear. They are approximately 3 min. into the song.
What is going on and how was that accomplished???

Good question. I'm kind of thinking it could be a talk box (http://www.scopecreep.com/Rhapsody/2005/01/songs-that-feature-talkbox-talkbox-is.html) setup, a-la Peter Frampton, except it sounds more like an organ was used as the instrument. It could also be a vocoder (http://www.sirlab.de/linux/descr_vocoder.html), but I not sure those were around in the analog days of '72, unless they were included as an effect in a synth. There are a lot of ways to manipulate vocal tracks, though. Maybe they just ran the track through some chorus / flanger effects with the modulation rate set high enough to give it the warbling efffect.
Maybe you can pose this question to one of the band members. Do they have any "question and answer" sections on any of the member websites? I remember reading such questions on Steve Howe's site several years ago, where people could submit questions about how this or that effect was achieved.

Sir Charles (SilenceoftheValley) & I were talking about that a while back, & we thought that they were subliminal messages. Well, they aren't subliminal messages - I recently looked at the lyrics on YesWorld, & they had apparently been updated, & this is what is being sung there...
Turn round tailor,
assaulting all the mornings of the interest shown,
presenting one another to the cord,
All left dying,
rediscovered Of the door that turned round,
To close the cover,
all the interest shown,
To turn one another,
to the sign at the time float your climb.Just thought I'd help. ;)

On the live DVD I have, Chris Squire very plainly is singing at that point. Don't know about the original though.
I'm pretty sure the vocals were run through a Leslie speaker. It was a somewhat common experiment in the day to run various things through Leslies.
