View Full Version : whoa!
No I do not know who decided what to put in this album but some of the selection is pretty dire...
OK we all have our favoruite tracks right, but as far as I am concerned, the object of such an album is to get people who are unaware of the band aware of the band, right.....
well i think that "higlights" failed..... it should have been released with a couple of brand new songs to help sales, one of which could have been 'radio firendly' in order to publicise the album....
and the cover........
what's going on there?

Yes I agree it's not the best selection for the average Yes Fan. But from what I can remember it is actually one of the better selling Yes compilation CD's around.
For the casual CD buyer who is just browsing a CD store its not that bad. There are people out there who have no allegiance to any particular band. They just like to buy "Best Of" CD's to add to their collection. They figure they should surely get a few good songs on one of these kinds of Compilations?
If only one in twenty of these casual buyers has their interest piqued enough to maybe buy an official album, well it has done the band a great service don't you think? And judging by the sales it must be hitting the mark.
The cover .. yes .. well it is crap isn't it .. :)))

Mike, I suppose that you are quite correct in what you say.
However, a "Best of" selection is supposed to include the "Best of" right..... and I for one think that the chaps who chose the track listing for Highlights really sat on the fence, took no risks and well, missed the point.
However, it does show the diversity of the bands playing styles, so that can't be bad.
I was totally unaware how well it had sold tho. Personally, I think that Classic Yes is a better compliation album...
But that's another story...

I'm just glad it doesn't contain any recordings I can't get anywhere else. I'd hate to have to own this "product".
Track list is as follows:
Survival; Time And A Word; Starship Trooper; I've Seen All Good People; Roundabout; Long Distance Runaround; The Fish; Soon; Wonderous Stories; Going For The One; Owner Of A Lonely Heart; Leave It; Rhythm Of Love
Obviously geared toward the uninitiated

Oh well. My dad told me to get some Yes, which I had never heard before, and so I got it. It got me hooked, but then some of the other compilations probably could have done it better.
I still think they should have put something from Close To The Edge on it, like maybe Seasons of Man or Apocalypse or something. Starship Trooper should not be the longest song on any album representing Yes in its entirety.
And it doesn't even have The Fish on it.

When I bought this disc, the only song I recognized by title was "Owner of a Lonely Heart". I had seen Yes recommended in both the "progressive rock" and "concept album" categories on Amazon.com, and since I had absolutely no experience (that I was aware of) with the former, and only limited experience with the latter, I decided I'd like to hear what they sounded like before I really started delving in.
I was pleasantly surprised to recognize four other tracks on the disc from my year or so (1975-6) working night shift at a bank with a guy who had the local album rock station on all night. I didn't know them by name, but I recognized the songs as soon as I heard them.
But, hearing samples from the different periods of history of the group made it easier for me to decide where to start my collection. I bought "Fragile", then "Close to the Edge" and haven't regretted it for a moment.
So, yeah, the "Very Best of" did its job for me at least. ;)

This is probably the only official Yes release I do not own. It seemed redundant having owned everything on it elsewhere. A release like this should have a new song or a live song on it for the hard core fans (Classic Yes had two live releases with it).
My question is to those who own it, is there any good reason to buy it if you already have everything else?
Glad to hear that is has brought some into the fold.

I would really doubt it. The only way I could see someone who already has a copy of everything on it being interested is if it just happened to match her/his own personal list of favorite songs of the group. That seems really unlikely, but I suppose it could happen.
My point was, though, that just because most of the already-initiated might scratch their heads a bit over this disc, there is an audience out there that it might reach, if my own case is not completely unique. :)

If I'm not mistaken, this came out around the time of Union/YesYears. It's obviously not for the long term fans that hang out here, but it's OK for casual fans, I guess. Sort of like Classic Yes--except Classic Yes had the great, great live versions of All Good People and Roundabout from the Forum concert in 78. Hilites didn't have anything like that...
It's been a while since i've logged on to Yesfans, and I thought i'd see what's been written. I'm very happy to see that the 'Highlights' album has caught some new fans...
I suppose that it has done it's job, and I was/am the wrong audience for this kind of recording from Yes...
Cany wait for the Live Box Set though....

im not a huge fan and my tastes in the group have changed since i first was into them back when 90125 came out, then of course i got big generator and then this release and later tales, then finally talk of course, but recently i started looking deeper into the group from its beginning and have found that their older material is the best and ive missed alot, so i first got the yes album as i like all the songs on it and then just recenly fragile and the same deal and in the process of receiving going for the one, tormato and drama which i ordered, but i do not care for their first two releases and only the two songs from them on this release, then from close till relayer i do not care for except soon also on this release, then the rabin period hits at the end are enough, so otherwise any bigger collections are no good and this is the best introduction to the group, then i would suggest getting the yes album, then fragile, then going for the one, then tormato and finally drama, if you are into their longer pieces which i am not get close, tales and relayer and if like their oldest material then get yes and time, but for me drama is a good end as their further 80s and early 90s material just does not do anything for me anymore, im glad i found the good stuff and this release helped me to start to find more that i did not know about before.

Thats pretty much exactly what i would say. I only recognized Owner of heart but it seems like a great collection. anyways it was made before their new stuff came out.
