Greetings everyone. I just became a crazed "Yes" fan as of recent (3-15-05). It was a result of listening to "Close to the Edge" and "Relayer". When I was young I listened to 80's junk, then progressed to some 70's guitar bands, then Pearl Jam, then a big jump to prog and instrumental jazz fusion, and finally to "Yes". I'm anxious to find more music similar to the two "Yes" albums I mentioned, from "Yes" or any other band. I'd appreciate any help anyone could give me. Thanks in advance. Ben

Welcome Ben

Frank's suggestions are sound.

Of course 70s Yes would be incomplete without Going for the One - it contains Awaken which for many Yes fans is their best song.

But there is plenty of good stuff in 80s an 90s Yes - a touch different but good nonetheless

Ben, welcome to the world of Yes. You can't go wrong with any of the albums all ready suggested. My personnal recommendation would be Going For the One. Brian mentioned that Awaken is the favorite Yes song of a lot of people. I am one of them.

To have just discovered Yes and have all that catalogue of music available must be an awesome experience. Having been a lapsed fan from the 70's I'm still discovering things today.

Welcome and enjoy the ride!

Ben there is so much Yes stuff. I feel you will like it all.
Like the classic albums of : Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge, Tales.
'Relayer' you know about, a one off masterpiece.
Then 'Going For The One' of course.
If you fancy something a little different there is the Rock Guitar of Trevor Rabin on albums such as '90125'.
Then you have the Yes band with line up used from Yes Album - Close to the Edge but without Chris
Squire, 'Anderson,Bruford,Wakeman, Howe' and the excellent live concert they did 'An Evening Of Yes Music Plus'.
Then there are the last two very excellent albums 'The Ladder' and 'Magnification' the last album featuring an Orchestra.

Pick up Yessongs for an awesome live experience...it is a MUST!!! All recordings were made during the '72 tour, and it is an incredible overview of some of Yes' best music. I would also suggest the studio AndersonBrufordWakemanHowe album...it is quite spectacular. Welcome to YES, friend!!!

Welcome to Yesfans, Ben. It's nice to meet you.

Save those pennies, you're going to need them. There's so much you need to listen to. Oh and please give the Trevor Rabin era of Yes a chance too.
(90125, Big Generator, Union and most of all Talk.) It's still Yes, just different.

Welcome to yesfans, edgenrelayer.

As you can see from the posts of other Yes fans on this thread, there is a huge catalogue of fabulous Yes music for you to discover. Enjoy!

By the way, how did you find out about the Close To The Edge and Relayer albums? Those two great Yesworks are ignored by the mainstream media.

Every YES effort is different to varying degrees. To find where they were and where they were headed, the logical choice would be to check out TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS and then GOING FOR THE ONE. However, that would eclipse Rick Wakeman's entry into the band by excluding FRAGILE which was released prior to TFTO. The legendary "Roundabout" appears on this very album along with a host of other goodies! So, may I suggest that you listen to FRAGILE first then GOING FOR THE ONE and then open your mind up to a real ocean of progressive sound by listening to TFTO. You'll be glad you did.

This is a great choice! It was the one that opened me up to the world of Yes and because of the fact that it had so much material on it it became a bit like my road map for Yes.

A warm welcome from me, too. Good for you, that you discovered Yes. It's in fact the only band I never got tired of since I was 9!!! You have a great musical ride ahead of you! Enjoy it and enjoy company with the other yesfans. You won't find better music fans anywhere!

Yeah, I already agree with you. I noticed the big welcome. You all seem to be very hospitable. I used to check out a pearl jam board. One of the band memember once made the claim that their fans were the most intelligent group of fans out of any. I bet you guys have that all young bunch beat though. Anyway, I'm going to follow up on most of the recommendations from these post- so thanks a lot. I bet I started off with the best "Yes" but I'm sure there's more to come. So how progressive sounding is "Fragile"? Is it the least progressive sounding of the cds mentioned in this thread? I think "Roundabout" is a great rock song but I also think everything off "CTTE" and "Relayer" is a lot better/ more interesting, at least according to my taste. I'm not sure what I'll think of "Fragile" but I bet I'll be into all the rest of the cds mentioned. Someone asked how I heard about "CTTE" and "Relayer". Giving "Yes" a listen is something I had wanted to do for a long while but I put it off after I went into a stage of listening to only instrumental music. I picked those two "Yes" cds after looking over the song titles. I thought they would be the two that were the most interesting. No one referred them to me. As far as bands go, it seems "Yes" is very hard to beat when it comes to musical talent and creativity. They seem to be the complete package.

Fragile is definitely progressive - Heart of the Sunrise & South Side of the Sky stand out. Also, not sure of the version of Roundabout that is played on radio - it is often a pared down version so make sure you listen to the full version. Despite being a tad overplayed, it remains an incredible song.

Progressive Rock is 'self-aware' rock.

It's the stuff that breathes, emotes, and replicates.

You simply cannot go wrong here...

Hi, Ben! Welcome to YesFans!

Wow - to just be discovering Yes music now - incredible! Enjoy your journey!

My journey began with a LIVE show - closely followed by Fragile and Close to the Edge, then Yessongs. I think you'll find Fragile very enjoyable - Heart of the Sunrise remains my favorite Yes song to this day . . .

No matter which you choose, I think you'll find a lot to enjoy - some of the players come and go through the years, and the style varies a bit, but underneath, it's all YES, and you'll realize that too.

Now you just have to get to a LIVE show! :D

That's the album that hooked me forever, and, imho, still the greatest live album ever made by anyone.

I got into Yes in 1975, and the next year after that was incredible because I kept discovering all this amazing music they'd made. It's quite a journey my friend.

Welcome, Ben! You've made the right decision. I'm only new here myself, but I really like these guys already!

You might want to check out The Yes Album - to me, this is the perfect album. TFTO (I'm guessing you know by now what that means) is also mind-blowing stuff, but in a different way. It's really one long epic poem about - well, whatever you make of it. I really would advise anybody to listen to it only from start to finish (though this could be with coffee breaks if you like - but preferably not). Don't even think about listening to bits of it, it will mean nothing that way. And do bear with The Ancient (the third part) - it may start strangely, with Steve Howe's wailing guitar playing over some very busy percussion sounds, but amazingly, it finally gives way to some of the finest acoustic guitar you are ever likely to hear, and a truly gorgeous little song from Jon Anderson near the end. Then there's the final part (side 4, if you happened to have a vinyl copy) - but I've waffled enough, just listen and enjoy.

Good luck and keep on posting.

TJ

Hi Ben! How exciting that you've just discovered Yes. You are in for the ride of your life! Just to fill you in, some of us Yesfans are Ph.D.'s, Mensa members, various levels of Cum Laude graduates, painters, sculptors, poets, songwriters, incredible musicians, scientists, attornies, and oh, the list goes on!

In my opinion, Yes's best work is CTTE. Many will agree with me, many won't. Fragile has some amazing songs on it. None are epics, like the actual song CTTE, but they are proggy and amazing! The songs South Side of the Sky and Heart of the Sunrise are nothing short of spectacular! And this album has Bill Bruford on drums. Bruford's emphasis is jazz, so this album offers some very unique sound. It is a MUST for any Yes fan.

I've been listening to Tales From Topographic Oceans alot lately. Talk about your epics! The album is absolutely stellar!

I can't wait to hear your opinions as your Yes library grows!
