Yes, I know this thread already exists, but back then I did not added RELAYER to my collection yet.

Now, I did! And I really love the album.

Well, I already knew SOUND CHASER and SOON from the YESYEARS box-set, and I heard THE GATES OF DELIRIUM from the LP (only 1 time!) but the song TO BE OVER was new for me. It really is beautiful!

A great album and I get used to GATES a little. Wonderful piece of music! SOUND CHASER is my favorite from this record, because of it's experimental mood and Patrick Moraz' fantastic solo at the end.

Now my YES collection consists the following records:

My dad's vinyls:

1. YES and TIME AND A WORD (combined into one package)
2. THE YES ALBUM
3. FRAGILE
4. CLOSE TO THE EDGE
5. YESSONGS
6. TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS
7. RELAYER
8. YESSHOWS

My dad's cd's:

1. FRAGILE (old version, not remastered)
2. UNION
3. THE YES SOLO FAMILY ALBUM

My dad's tapes:

1. ANDERSON, WAKEMAN, BRUFORD, HOWE

My own cd's:

1. YES
2. TIME AND A WORD
3. THE YES ALBUM
4. CLOSE TO THE EDGE
5. TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS
6. RELAYER
7. SOMETHING'S COMING (bbc sessions 1969 - 1970, unofficial version by 'double classics' series)

Which one should I buy next time ???

May I boldly suggest Going For The One or Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe.

But definitly you need to have the amazing cd that contains Awaken and Turn of The Century (GFTO).

I know that most people will try to get you to buy older items. I, personally, think you should try some of the new stuff. Now, maybe you already have them and just haven't listed them but MAGNIFICATION, THE LADDER and KEYSTUDIO are gonna wind up in your collection sooner or later.

I think that MAGNIFICATION is the best thing the band have done since ANDERSON BRUFORD WAKEMAN HOWE - maybe even as far back as TORMATO. It really has some remarkable stuff on it.

Next, I'd go with THE LADDER. It's got good stuff (but MAG's better). This one even has some "fun" songs.

I'm sure you'll be talked out of OPEN YOUR EYES, partly because it wasn't entirely a group effort. It started as a Chris Squire/Billy Sherwood album. Then the rest of Yes came along and "enhanced" it. I think it's a terrific album. "New State of Mind" is one of my favorite songs by Yes in the last ten years.

That brings me to KEYSTUDIO. I have mixed feelings about this. I keep thinking that I'm supposed to like it, but there's a spark that seems to be missing. My favorites are "That, That Is" and "Children of Light". Again, you'll wind up buying it sooner or later and there are great moments on there.

As for their back-catalogue, don't let the nay-sayers fool you. TORMATO is truly a great album. (Better than GOING FOR THE ONE, in my opinion - though I'm in the minority here.) And don't for get the Jon-less DRAMA. It contains one of my all-time-favorite YesTunes: "Tempus Fugit". Wow. Now there's fun song!!

Happy Hunting!

Relayer is a strong album, with seemingly loads of energy. Gates is a one-of-a-kind piece----absolutely brilliant start to finish. The rest of the album is also very strong. They really hit the nail with this one and their next studio album, GFTO. Two great Yes albums.

I think you should check out 90125. Not that it's THE greatest
Yes album, but it's the first album by the "new" Yes and it was
that album that turned me into a devoted fan forever (after seeing them live for the first time in 1984.

Also the new album Magnification is a truly great album. You should have it!

I agree with Dragonfly and Leo C--Magnification should be next. Get it and tell us of your adventure.

Speaking of Magnification and Yes, I was at Best Buy today and saw 6--count em--6 full bins of Yes cd's! I could not believe all they had. Just about every one. I looked through other artists and they had maybe one or two of just about everybody else. It was way cool.

And Leo C, Welcome to the site! Glad to have you aboard!

I remember buying a cassette of this when it first came out to listen to while driving my first car... Turn Of The Century always reminds me of lying by a swimming pool in the summer of '1977. The year I discovered books. The year I lost my virginity. The year of Awaken & Parallels! A damm good year all the way around...

Get 'Going For The One'! You must!

I agree with almost everyone else. Get GOING FOR THE ONE next. Then get MAGNIFICATION. Get them both the same time if you can!

After that, get stuff from the rest of my list, and eventually get everything else not listed. Explore the solo stuff too. If you're a true Yes fan, you'll want them all. And fer Gawds sake, get yer own copies of the stuff your Dad has. And get the remastered CD of YESSHOWS so you can hear RITUAL without it being split in two parts.

If you don't get GOING FOR THE ONE and MAGNIFICATION next, the girl gets it!!!!

We don't wish anything to happen to the girl, so better do what i-and-i says!

The 'Keys' CD's were instrumental in my becoming re-Yesobsessed when they came out... Check out the great live version of Siberian Khatru (What is a Khatru? My new thread I think!).

You have much fun ahead of you, so carry on m' friend!

You have the top 4 albums in
CTTE
TFTO
TYA
Relayer

You must add GFTO to complete the top 5

Uh oh. Slow down now. RHINO is reissuing the Yes catalog with bonus tracks, so you really should wait on the Atlantic/Atco material. Might as well wait for the updated versions to be released.

Then get the Yes Symphonic DVD. It will be the only DVD you watch a thousand times. Happy Holidays.

I like to follow the progression of releases as they happen, so I would get Going for the One. Since they are a recent discovery of yours, you should keep current, too. This means Magnification.

So, buy two, GFTO and Magnification. Then I would move on to Tormato, Drama, 90125, etc.

I was first exposed just after the release of Close to the Edge. I saw the Tales concert before I really knew much of Tales, but I knew a fair amount of TYA, Fragile and CTTE. By the time the Relayer tour came, I knew TYA, Fragile, CTTE, and Tales well, and had a few listenings of Relayer. Since then I have always kept current.

The downside of coming in late is the back catalog. I have never really warmed well to releases prior to TYA. I find TYA to be as vintage as I can handle. The soundscape really came alive on CTTE due to the keyboards and the additional guitars used.

Same is true for Gentle Giant. I only listen to their 4th release (Octopus) and beyond.

Get Union .. its usually very cheap and has some good songs on it even though it gets slagged off by most people. If you like it things can only get better from there haha .. :)

IMHO, Going For The One is their best album and I highly recommend it. Next is Tormato, a very underrated album, but well worth the time and money.

This is such an easy question. Sell your car then buy every Yes release. Then stay home with dad and enjoy.
