I am new to this site, and I want to say hello to everyone ! A yes fan ? Yes I am ! Also a Trevor Rabin fan. The fact of the matter is that Trevor Rabin, although perhaps being a shy guy,but he was definitely a strong link in the Yes-chain. One thing is certain :Without him things would have never looked the same, and his contribution to the revival of Yes was enormous.
He was a needed fresh blood, something which nobody can deny.

Hi steelyDan, and welcome.
I love Trevor's work. 90125 is excellent. Changes is my favorite of that CD.
BG has great music on it. I saw Trevor 3 times with Yes in CA. During the Union Tour when they played the Forum in LA, Trevor showed himself a master of the guitar. The guitar work he added to Awaken I don't think could've been achieved by any other guitarist. A delicate frenzy.

Hi Wolf,
With regard to Awaken, which I didn't have the chance to hear it,everything else demonstrates ,time and again, that TrevorRabin has a true musical genius within him.You have mentioned Changes, but what about I'M RUNNING ,LOVE WILL FIND A WAY,FINAL EYES! It's just magical!

also, the lead work on Hold On, etc. I think the ideas must have been sent to him from the heavens.
I hope Yes will work with him some more.
When I saw Yes (west) at the Santa Barbara County Bowl, not only were they fantastic, but it seemed to me that Chris Squire looked as happy as Ive ever seen him. It was a great concert.

Welcome to the site!
I'm a HUGE Steely Dan fan! SD is up there with Yes and early Genesis with my music gods!
It doesn't get much better than "Your Gold Teeth 2" or "Katy Lied."
Although not a big fan of Trevors. However, you've already met Cindy, who helps (with Jane Eyre) keep the faith for the Trevor-lovers.
Plus, of course, he was hot. But if I'm gonna go there, I gotta get past Jane AND Cindy, both of whom I believe have restraining orders filed against them when it comes to Trevor.
HE HE HE.
I have a lot of respect for Trevor as a producer, as well as what he did for the band in the 80s.
That's as far as I'll go!
Welcome! Post early, and often!

Well said about SD!You see?your taste isn't really bad at all . However, when it comes to Trevor,it seems that you don't fancy him,and that's also a matter of taste. Have you heard his early work, like PAINTED PICTURE,CANDY'S BAR,STAY WITH ME,FINDING ME A WAY BACK HOME,LOOKING FOR THE MAN...?
Besides, the reality tells us that Trevor was the reason why YES were kept together.
Not only he joined them, but he introduced a new music formula that they never tried before, and it worked. It really did, though that's what most people foget. Before Trevor's arrival, Steve Howe had already left for another band.Such a great guitarplayer, yet with a different play-style and a different approach than Trevor.
Perhaps it is the very reason why we should not "disqualify" one in favor of the other, because everyone of them gave his heart and soul to the music of YES !

years of aggravation seems to fade again
yearning for a stream with sparkling ripples
ripples fading peacefully to sleep

I must say,it reads a lot easier when the lyrics come with the record or CD.
And if it is not the case, one can only interpret what one hears.
Of all the 5 records that I have, only CAN'T LOOK AWAY does have the words printed on the sleeve,so I have to figure out everything else!!!Nontheless,I'd love to have all lyrics, but it's an impossible task for you to communicate them to me through the site, like you did with PaintedPicture. The only way is maybe to find musicsheet for Trevor's songs, where the lyrics are automatically printed along with the music. But that's quite impossible, because I am not so sure if Trevor's songs were or will ever be published.
If he is reading this note,I would beg him to consider the matter : Please Trevor, publish your songs !

I have 3 Rabbitt albums. I really enjoy them. On Trevor's solo album, Can't Look Away, he sings a song called Hold On To Me which is a remake of his Rabbitt song Hold On To Love. It's the same song, he just did it a little differently and changed the name.
Rabbitt's first #1 song in South Africa was a cover of Jethro Tull's Locomotive Breath. It was fun listening to their version.
I have a short clip of a news story done on Trevor and Rabbit from back in 1976. They were running from a group of screaming girls. Reminded me of the Beatles. :D

I recall when I was small
How I spent my days alone
The busy world was not for me
So I went and find my own
I'd climb the garden wall
with a candle in my hand
I'd hide inside a hole of rock and sand.....
On a stone an ancient hand
In a faded yellow green
Made alive a worldly wonder
often told but never seen
Now and ever bound to labor
on the sea and in the sky
Every man in beast appeared
a friend as real as I.....
Can it be the sad design
could be the very same
A wooly man without a face
and a beast without a name
Nothing here but history
can you see what has been done
Memory rush over me
Now I step into the sun.

Hi Olias ,
Steve Howe and Trevor Rabin, are two monuments, each one of them has a different approach for playing the guitar, as an instrument, and a different philosophy vis-a-vis making music:That is, composing.
If you are a musician, you would have already found out that Steve's guitar technique cannot be emulated. It has rather something to do with his personal style, and not necessarily with anything else.
Trevor Rabin,on the other hand, has been into music since very early age,and therefore his influences were of a wide range.Consequently he is an "allrounder"per definition, and is able to play anything at any time.He has incorporated the art of composing,by relying constantly on his musical legacy.
He must be using a large number of music structures in his head, something that all great composers have to have access to,at any time.
In that regard,he doesn't necessarily have to be compared with other contemporary musicians. Because, if you do that,it would be like comparing Mozart with Beethoven,Bach with Rossini. That wouldn't make sense,I guess.

If THE ROYAL SCAM is one of your favotites, then what about the Caves Of Altamira ?
"Before the fall, when I wrote it on the wall,
When there wasn't even any Hollywood."
Lyrical genius. We played that a lot my freshman year in college.
Although my favorite song on the album is "Don't Take Me Alive." What an amazing guitar sound.
As to the "tonight when I chase the dragon" lyric from "Time Out of Mind", for those who aren't in the know, "chasing the dragon" is a reference to smoking heroin on a piece of foil. It burns, and you suck up the smoke with a straw as it vaporizes, hence "chasing the dragon."
An ex-junkie friend told me this.
If I had to pick a favorite Steely Dan song, it would be Dr. Wu. Talk about lyrical genius.
Katie is obviously cocaine. And Dr. Wu is a dealer. But Katie is also a real woman in the song. And Dr. Wu is also a dispenser of Asian healing drugs, mostly aphrodiacs, as well as a buddy of the singer who's fallen victim to addiction. He is a "shadow of the man I once knew" on several levels.
I also think "Dr. Wu" is the psychic part of the singer who has become hopelessly lost in drugs, women, and forgotten his goal in life in the mindless pursuit of sex and drugs.
It's an amazing tableaux of addiction, both to love and drugs. Dense with images. Very much like James Joyce at his best, every word has several meanings. Most Steely Dan lyrics are this dense with meaning, but I think they hit the apogee with "Dr. Wu."
"Katy tried
I was halfway crucified
I was on the other side
Of no tomorrow
You walked in
And my life began again
Just when I'd spent the last piaster
I could borrow
All night long
We would sing that stupid song
And every word we sang
I knew was true
Are you with me Doctor Wu
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew
Are you crazy are you high
Or just an ordinary guy
Have you done all you can do
Are you with me Doctor
Don't seem right
I've been strung out here all night
I've been waiting for the taste
You said you'd bring to me
Biscayne Bay
Where the Cuban gentlemen sleep all day
I went searching for the song
You used to sing to me
Katy lies
You could see it in her eyes
But imagine my surprise
When I saw you
Are you with me Doctor Wu
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew
She is lovely yes she's sly
And you're an ordinary guy
Has she finally got to you
Can you hear me Doctor "

Hi Timmo,
You know much about the lyrics of Steely Dan ! All I know is that Dr. Wu actually one of the songs that I enjoy playing on the guitar ,everytime. It took me long before I could figure out how to play every bit of it. It is for me still a great song. It has got both ,dramatic vibes and a certain amount of groove. Although I didn't know it's about sex and drugs. The intro prepares you already for the best. The chords used there are very harmonic!
Steely Dan is among my favourite groups of all time ! I'm quite happy to learn more about the meaning of their lyrics. Some of these drugs references totally escaped me.

Wheel turnin’ ’round and ’round
You go back jack do it again
Their first hit. I do believe this one started it all. :D

"Before the fall, when I wrote it on the wall,
When there wasn't even any Hollywood."
Lyrical genius. We played that a lot my freshman year in college.
Although my favorite song on the album is "Don't Take Me Alive." What an amazing guitar sound.
As to the "tonight when I chase the dragon" lyric from "Time Out of Mind", for those who aren't in the know, "chasing the dragon" is a reference to smoking heroin on a piece of foil. It burns, and you suck up the smoke with a straw as it vaporizes, hence "chasing the dragon."
An ex-junkie friend told me this.
If I had to pick a favorite Steely Dan song, it would be Dr. Wu. Talk about lyrical genius.
Katie is obviously cocaine. And Dr. Wu is a dealer. But Katie is also a real woman in the song. And Dr. Wu is also a dispenser of Asian healing drugs, mostly aphrodiacs, as well as a buddy of the singer who's fallen victim to addiction. He is a "shadow of the man I once knew" on several levels.
I also think "Dr. Wu" is the psychic part of the singer who has become hopelessly lost in drugs, women, and forgotten his goal in life in the mindless pursuit of sex and drugs.
It's an amazing tableaux of addiction, both to love and drugs. Dense with images. Very much like James Joyce at his best, every word has several meanings. Most Steely Dan lyrics are this dense with meaning, but I think they hit the apogee with "Dr. Wu."
"Katy tried
I was halfway crucified
I was on the other side
Of no tomorrow
You walked in
And my life began again
Just when I'd spent the last piaster
I could borrow
All night long
We would sing that stupid song
And every word we sang
I knew was true
Are you with me Doctor Wu
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew
Are you crazy are you high
Or just an ordinary guy
Have you done all you can do
Are you with me Doctor
Don't seem right
I've been strung out here all night
I've been waiting for the taste
You said you'd bring to me
Biscayne Bay
Where the Cuban gentlemen sleep all day
I went searching for the song
You used to sing to me
Katy lies
You could see it in her eyes
But imagine my surprise
When I saw you
Are you with me Doctor Wu
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew
She is lovely yes she's sly
And you're an ordinary guy
Has she finally got to you
Can you hear me Doctor "
Muscla,
Your interpretation of "Dr.WU" 's lyrics is incredibly strong. That same applies for all their songs,as you put it, full of tableaux of addiction. But what will "Goucho" then be about? I am asking you this, because I love that song as much as Dr.WU,and you might know more about the background in that regard, than I do.
Playing GOUCHO on the guitar, means that you will be using a very large number of chords, and it is best played in the key of " F " major. But when you learn how to play it,it gives you a real "kick".
Just when I say boy we can't miss
You were golden then you do this,
You say this guy is so cool
snapping his fingers like a fool......

Gaucho is about two friends, probably gay lovers, that work together at an exclusive club. The younger and less experienced of the two has hooked up with a homeless Hispanic gentleman and brought him to the club, where he is told in no uncertain terms that his "gaucho" does not fit in the atmosphere "High in the Custerdome" (whatever that is, and they've never explained the word.
Alternately, it could be an older gay man keeping a younger one, who brings home his latest trick right before a very exclusive party.

That is probably why one of them keeps asking the other, that he should care to explain, why he was holding hands with the man from Rio !!
Musically, Goucho is a masterpiece, another side of Steely Dan's achievements.Think of the beautifuly performed saxophone work. Not to mention that chorus line!
Look forward to read more posts, Muscla~Take care !
