Otherwise, I can't say no when an establishment lists Kilkenny on tap.

McSorley's Dark Ale right from the tap at McSorley's Old Ale House in the East Village in NYC.

Yummy, yummy, yummy. Anyone who has been there knows what I am talking about.

Hell I've been waiting for this one.

Just like "YES" keep it "REAL".

Favourite beer?? Well, um, maybe favourite beerS!

Grolsch
Warsteiner
Gritstone
Sleemans Cream Ale

and for a change: there was a beer I used to get in Superior Wisconsin way back when I used to be a sailor on the Great Lakes. It was called Grain Belt. Nobody liked it but me!

Shameful poll! No Theakston's Old Peculiar, No Old Thumper, No Bishop's Finger, No Summer Lightning, No Greene King IPA, No Horndean Special Brew????

I thought this was about real beer, not these fizzy pop things!

Simon.

PS I'd also cast a vote for Kwak which is a great Belgian beer!

OH Yeah there's alot of good beer out there.I remember getting a 5 liter keg of Monschhof for the UNION tour back when.that was mighty tasty.I like the St.Pauli Girl, but it is watered down by the time it gets to us here.German beer is much richer over there.I think Henninger puts out a beer at Christmas time that is 52 proof!YIKES! There is nothing there for REAL beer drinkers to vote on. As an ex Brit in Oz I would have to go for "Guinness". I have drank most of the ozzie largers but always go back to the good old Gunniness. But it has to be in bottles not cans. Drinking out of glass is always perferable. I know all the "Poms" on the site may come up with something better as we know all REAL ALE comes from the UK.

You didn't post my 2 favorites ; so I will !
1.) 'Pacifico' - GREAT Mexican light beer (better than Corona) - slice of lime , hot sun ; oh man !!
2.) 'Guinness' - nothing more need be said. And an f.y.i. to dark lovers ; buy 'Guinness' in the can , not the bottle - it's much creamier !

Guinness is still the standard by which all are measured (imho),but here in Maine we're blessed with a large number of craft brewers producing really decent ales. Look around for Gritty's, Oak Pond Brewery, and Shipyard if you're up visiting this summer!

umgekehrt
07-03-2004, 06:17 PM
Actually, you don't get beer belly from beer alone, but more from the snack you eat while you're drinking. Somehow drinking alcohol gives you the munchies. So you get that bag of potato chips or whatever around you that's eatable. Then you prop yourself in front of your TV set and that's it. 100% calory intake + no muscle activity = beer belly

I too love the Guiness (Extra Stout, please) and any dark and bitter lager. I enjoy the local (VT made) Magic Hat #9, and especially their Humble Patience beer. That puppy's thick! Harpoon used to make this beer called Munich Type Dark that I loved.

I haven't had this beer since I went to the Clifford Ball in upstate NY in 1996, but it was called Blackened Voodoo Lager. Whadda beer.

Sounds like you European folk have a right to be snobby about your beer! haha! We do brew some lousy stuff here in the USA, don't we?

I'll pass on beer if the options are Bud, Bud Light, and Budder Light. I also won't bother with the Coors and Millers of the world. I want a beer I can sink my teeth into.

Anchor Steam. It's a large microbrewery (kind of like Sam Adams) in San Francisco. Wonderful stuff!

I love Guiness.

There's a porter and an oatmeal stout made up in Washington State somewhere. I had it at a wonderful microbrew pub in Santa Monica called "Father's Office." Don't remember the name, must go back there.

A black and tan made with that outmeal stout floating on Anchor Steam would be sublime.

In the naivety of my youth, I thought that Budweiser was really 'the king of beers.' Then, I discovered Anchor Steam beer, and realized that there was more to this than I thought. Gradually, I worked my way up through ale to porter, and finally, to stout.

I happen to be lucky enough to live in the area that Bert Grant choose to build his brewry, Yakima, Washington. Probably because my father was in the hop business, and Yakima is one of the largest hop-producing areas in the world. Bert choose Yakima for the local hops, supposedly, and built a microbrewy. He opened what is claimed to be the first post-Prohibition era brew pub here, which is where I discovered Grant's Imperial Stout. While I was living is Seattle about ten years ago, Imperial Stout outsold Guiness at the local Safeway grocery three to one.

After Grants Imperial, I would choose Obsidian Stout from the Deschutes River Brewry, in Bend, Oregon, then Doubleblack Stout from the Redhook Brewry in Seattle. I consider all of them to be superior to Guiness, but I have to settle for Guiness frequently, if I can get stout at all. And so many places serve stout cold! (Of course, it is a lot easier to pour that way.)

Most people would know Grant's from their Scottish Ale, which has been quite popular.

Depends on the situation. When I'm going for quantity, can't beat Killians Red ($1.50 draft), but my favorite brew has to be Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout, followed closely by SS Taddy Porter. And for summertime outdoor parties, nothing beats Corona with lime from a cooler full of ice. Whenever I travel I always try the local micros!

Have to also mention that I grew up on Genessee Cream Ale, but haven't had one since moving out of the northeast. Genny 12 Horse Ale wasn't bad either. So many beers, so little time...

Guiness hath no depth. It is like drinking milk. Sierra Nevada makes a far superior standard stout. Grants has a great imperial stout. Left Hand makes a wonderful milk stout for those who lean towards the milder, Guiness style, but still want some flavor. Guiness is the Budweiser of the style, and leaves much to be desired.

And before anybody starts, I have tried more than 3500 different beers, and am always on the lookout for more, but my standard list alone (those I will always return to) numbers over fifty. Guiness would not be on it, but I will drink it when somebody offers, just to be polite.

Guinness is the best. I'll drink to that!

It is about 22 small glasses of all the varieties of SN. It is fun and you get a real buzz from one sampler.

English booze. MMMmmmmm. :git[1]:

Ahhhh Fat Tire was one of my favorites for sometime. Pyramid is in Colorado Springs and for a long time you could only get it there. My Ex would go and visit her sister who was going to College their and invaribly would bring back a suit case full of the Tire every few months! THAT'S when I started renting those little carts in the airport........

Seems Fat Tire has fallen off the list a bit, last time I tried it, I didn't care for it too much....

When I used to travel to England a lot, my favorite was a cask ale called "6X". My second favorite was any other cask ale, and I like a good English bitter as well. And Murphy's Stout on tap.

In the US we have a good local brewery, Great Lakes, that makes some great ales and other styles. Nosferatu is a good one.

Can't believe I haven't posted! Bud Light is my get-drunk brand.
Probably my favorite would be Fuller's ESB. It's my get-drunker brand!
Albedo have you heard of it? It's from England.

I think I've had it, I think I liked it, but I had a lot of them, I'm not sure. Another one you can get in the US is Boddingtons, it's not bad either.

I voted for Beck's, but it has to be Beck's Dark.

(I can't drink anymore, but when I did, I loved to drink beer.)

I also used to like to go to micro breweries and sample their
seasonal brews. Fun!

Back when I used to drink beer, and I don't anymore except very very rarely I'll have one, you'd most likely find Beck's or Grolsch in my fridge... and sometimes Heineken's, but it always left me a little disappointed - it's reputation exceeds it's character for my tongue. Sometimes Molson's Ale.

And occasionally Whitbread Ale, I loved that stuff!! And John Courage...

Never Bud, Miller, Coors.... what do you expect?? Ya'all know I'm a Steve Howe loving Classic Yes snob!!

I can't find it anymore, but I've never tasted a beer that appealed to me more than Moosehead Ice. That would be followed by Bass Ale, and then, if it's well crafted, a blueberry ale.

Favorite US beer: Sam Adams Cherry Wheat

Favorite local beer: Wachusett Brewery's PorterHmm, Cherry Wheat? I've heard you mention this many times. I hate the taste of beer, but love the buzz. Maybe this could change with Cherry Wheat!

I don't drink any more, but I do provide four house beers for guests (can't help it--I'm still a chef, although I left the industry for good!):

1.) Red Tail Ale

2.) Pilsner Urquell

3.) Rolling Rock

4.) Sam Adams

On very special occasions, I break out the Orval.

The house champagne is Perrier-Jouet.

The house wines vary.

The house chocolate is Valrhona (Die, Scharffenberger! DIE!!!).
