My God 'Yes' fans hope your excited as me!!!!!

http://www.rogerdean.com/floatingislands/intro.html

Roger Dean is currently developing a film based on his artwork for the covers of various Yes albums with the working title Floating Islands. There is a great deal of interest in the project from a number of film studios, but to ensure that the producers can maintain artistic control and create the vision without diluting or sidetracking the concept, there is a need to independently fund the development work. Click here for information on the project, and how you can help with the funding.

I wouldn't get too excited yet.

I've been around the entertainment industry for a long time, and when someone claims on their website that "mutiple major movie studios are interested" and simultaneously is soliciting $$$, the smell isn't good.

This is one of a number of film projects that Roger Dean has been working on. And Yes, he would like Yes to do the soundtrack. That has been in discussion for at least 6 months with the group. Whether it will come to fruition is anyones guess.

I know.. I don't post that often here anymore, but could not resist this one...
Frankly I have to agree here.. Although it seems like a big thing coming up, once again money is the big thing. As always. besides, I have to say I don't find Roger Dean that much inspiring anymore. To me, it is just another kind of harvest on the same fields..

I think it would only work if Roger could leave those album covers aside and start from sketch completely. in the movie there only has to be the hints and links towards those album covers...
In Yes history there have been several attempts to come up with some sort of animation, combined with Roger's art and likings.. no one of them was really considered by fans as a great effort..

And then again, after 30 or more years telling me that the whole Yes album art is one basic story?? Come on...

I would not bet my 5000 on this if you wan't my opinion..

Love,

Jasper

Jasper grand reading your words here.

I have to say Muscla that "MANY" studios are interested yet the man is looking publically for financial support....doesn't tend to jive with me. I would think that within his circles and the art/movie/music production circles, his backing would be found there. Hasn't floating islands already been animated? Anything new to it?

I'd love to see this movie, but I agree that the money solicitation isn't a good sign . . . .

And yes, Jasper, I'd love to see some work of Roger's done from a different standpoint too.

I think Tim's got a point here. If multiple major studios are interested, why do they still need money? Surely the studios are supposed to provide them with money and equipment, since they will get profits from the sale of it later. I'm not saying that statement was a lie, there probably are some major studios that are interested, but they seem not ready to commit...

what i got from it was they need money for the script and sketces to resent to the studios that will will be interested

I would read it that the more funding coming from an "external" source means more control is also lost to that external source. Therefore if you can input as much as possible yourself then you retain a greater element of control over what goes on. I don't read it as a bad sign but just an attempt to hold on to the strings as much as possible. Take it to its logical conclusion - if 100% funding is raised then no big business gets its mitts on the project.

Don't be so negative folks!

I agree, InverYes...I would hate to see something like that go to waste after big business gets a hold of it...I wonder what Clerks would be like if it weren't independently filmed...one of the best IF's (Independent Films), I know of. Definitely something I would love to see done...but I wonder if it will actually get done...after all, sometimes it's said that something is going to be filmed and then it never happens...I've seen it happen a lot...I remember a few years ago I heard that someone was going to come up with a Myst movie that was going to air on the SciFi channel...I never saw it air and I would have loved to see this because I am a big Myst Fan...(my chat name, volah_dohvah is actually D'ni, the language from the game, it means "Yes World"). Boy I would have loved to see a movie about Myst...

If Yes does the lyrics for it, I will get a copy of the movie and watch it so many times the DVD will wear out.

The money issue aside(alot of movies are independently made and then shopped to studios for distribution)Hence, recoupment blah, blah, blah. What we should be talking about here is what Yes music should the film include.I believe I received the same annoucement. And,it said it(The movie) would be based on the album covers Roger created for Yes.So,fellow Yesfans we all know the covers and the songs. What's the soundtrack?Keeping in mind this movie will be between 90-120 minutes

Well, if the news was that either the Cyan production team or PIXAR studios would be involved, it would be a huge relief to me! But i guess that's a very small chance to happen... My fear is just that this will be exactly one of those shelved ideas here... Looks great initially, bu twhen you need to work out plans? Far to complicated...

I'm really sorry by the way for being this negative, but with such things like this a lot of fans got dissappointed in the past and turned their backs towards our beloved band. Really hate to see that happen time after time...

What is it with all this animation anyway?? Jon went searching for someone to help him out some animation as well... Is Animation the big business today? Someone even created an album on that concept.. about two decades ago...

Love it is!

I've fantasized about a Roger Dean movie with Yes music as the score for YEARS. I think this is even more exciting than the prospects of a new album.

I agree with you on this. It would be sooo perfect to see this happen. A Yes/Dean co-production.

I remember The Wall when it first came out. I was amazed. When I first saw the cover art-work and heard the radio hit on education I was skeptical as to whether they were going to be too poppy but it was a great work.

It seems though that this is only speculation that Yes will do this.

I had read somewhere that Jon may return to Olias of Sunhillow. And of course he has been looking for animators.

That could be something else to wish for. The concept and cover artwork on that album could lead to an amazing animation and musical story.

What's up with website. I post things and later they disappear.

I SAID. I've been waiting for Dean for years to create an animation based on his work.!!! Then after I saw 'Lord of the Rings', I was completely convinced that DEAN should have his work visualized in 3D. As an lifelong painter and computer graphics artist in LA. I've fantasized about seeing Roger's work come to life for years! In fact I recently took his images from YES albums and animated about 10 different short sequences using Adobe AfterEffects animation program (not like the jittery FLASH program stuff). I'll try to make the files small enough to send as Giff animations for posting on this site.

I also wrote DEAN about a year ago suggesting that he someday find a way to get his work in film. I don't know if this is a 2D animated project but I hope this is a 3D computer generated deal. No scenery could be as moving and beautiful than his work in motion created with a good budget. The budget is very important. If I had a several million $, I would definately support it.

Maybe he took my advice. Nah. I can't imagine that he and many others haven't been considering this for a long time. Then again.....

Don't be so negative folks! That simply is not how movies are financed, especially when "major studios" are involved.

Unless the person developing the property is either/or/both 1) extremely wealthy, and 2) has an independent financing source. In either case, they wouldn't be soliciting donations for a project on a website.

Also, "major studio interest," even if they weren't interested in financing it themselves, would lead somewhat to #2 above; again, RD wouldn't need to be busking on Yesfans.

YEShead42
02-05-2005, 05:40 AM
If you hand over your project to a major studio, say Disney/pixar you loose all control. They would take over and we would end up with a kids movie about a kid and his puppy and it wouldn't have anything to do with Dean's original vision of the movie. I fully support the idea of raising your own financing and keeping 100% control over every asspect of the film from start to finish.

WELL!. those peices resemble those of 'Yessongs' artwork. SO MAYBE!. the peices from 'Fragile land' have floated through space ALA FLOATING ISLANDS. entered a new planet and smacked into the ground and formed now what is commonly know as 'Yessongs...land' oh maybe i'm completly wrong and Roger Dean is sitting here laughing aat my stupidity.

He needs to make a video game - like Myst and Morrowind

No death blows or killing etc... Just the ability to vitually walk/drive/cruise around this (YES/Dean) fantastic world and interact with the enviroment - could also be an online game or ?? journey.

There are some great CG artist's out there but they need to be paid. A never ending world it could be.

I tried to make an Unreal mod years ago just like that, helping the four-armed alien natives plus marooned humans and not the Skaarj with only a hand and taling and exploring/building tools and machines, but no-one liked the concept.
In one multilevel I had a clear rotating spaceship fly and spin above you and land so you can enter it and teleport to next area- no frustrating Myst-like constant loads and static graphics. Still have thatsaved and it's not the best-dovetailed landscaping but conceptually, it fits.

I was always tired of holding only weapons.
In Thief and Deus Ex , both Looking Glass Studios alumnal games , you can finish with killing no-one or only one person in DX.
Deus Ex uses Unreal engine- imagine Dean's graphics wedded to UT2k4 engine and modded into a Yes adventureŠ!
The geniuses at ttlg.com CAN do this- they made multiplayer Thievery for 'Net play play FREE and it uses Unreal Tournament engine modded.
Contact them but they don't like me now since I became a Yesaholic in 2004.
Bah.

I would love to see your work. Why not just make a small website to host the 'mini' sequences'.

Flash jittery? Hmmm. Okay, I've never messed around with Adobe AFTEReFFECTS (Though I swear by Adobe Photoshop/CS2), but Flash would seem to me to be able to handle some crazy stuff. Especially with ActionScript at your command. Does AfterEffects convert to other files like Quicktime/Windows Media/MPEG? What's its export possibilities? Is GIF the only option.

SORRY about all the questions! It's just that I always envisioned this very site YES/YESFANS would be very graphically orientated, inline with each ''design'' that has followed the various Yes line-ups, and I always saw it being very FLASH/etc. in this design. If I had the time, I'd do the Trevor Rabin portion of this site, just because I'm tired of seeing COMING SOON!!! But when I see things for this site, I see the discography being totally interactive and animated in line with each album. For DRAMA I always saw that landscape being empty, but the opening music to Machine Messiah starts, and all of a sudden you see the bird fly past, and then the cats after it. Your menu headings would be Lyrics, Information, Band Profile (for that album) etc. Just really integrated, and do that for each album Yes has released.

Anyway, if you do have these in ''small file'' format, let us know. I'd love to see them and what you've done.

The QuickTimes always end up being too large for posting. I can send them to you directly via email. I am not sure how to create mpegs from AFX or QT's. The gifs tend to distort the original colors. Pedro you actually see the Socceroos going throught to the next round? Well they have the best coach for that job. Miracle Man Guud Hiddink did it with South Korea in 2002.

Did you know that there will be 4 coaches from Holland at the tournament?
Leo Beenhakker (ex national coach for Holland - ex Ajax - ex Real Madrid)
Dick Advocaat (ex national coach for Holland - ex PSV - ex Glasgow Rangers)
Guus Hiddink (ex national coach for Holland - PSV - ex Real Madrid)
and our current national coach of course; Marco van Basten, a top player who played for Ajax, AC Milan and Holland, he made Holland European Champion in 1988, when Rinus Michels (R.I.P.) was the coach (ex Ajax - ex FC Barcelona).

There is a big chance that some of the 4 will meet each other in the tournament.

Where's all the talk about the movie? Is it a bust or what?

From reading BrianD's interview with Chris Squire, you don't get a good feeling about this:

http://yesfans.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24577&highlight=Squire+interview

However, there's no change on Roger's site--all the information about the film and it's financing remains unchanged. This project was the main source of optimism that there would be new studio music from the classic lineup in our not too distant futures. Hopefully, that prospect remains viable.

Note to the Yes Gods--make this happen!

I've always been very sceptic about this project, although I would love to see it coming alive..

It is just another way of tapping some RD fans' wallets i'm afraid, with again a certain amount of prints sold, but no movie..

Roger's site has bothered me even more due to the lack of updates and content. Some information is left untouched on the site for over more then a half year, and it doesn't appear to me that Roger is doing a lot these days..

Love,

Jasper

roger's november update states 68% funding reached +talks with distributors for rest, final draft of script finished this month,so i wouldn't say roll out the redcarpet just yet, but i would say forklift it down from the top racking and ready it on the loading dock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

saw narnia yesterday with sammy mac the rock kid, another enchanting tale filmed in the untouched beauty of new zealand,so in what seems an overcrowded marketplace for fantasy, hope roger ploughs ahead.he does have his unique vision, who else can conjure up curvilinear wonders like him?and if there's heart in the story it will break out into the mainstream.still keeping fingers crossed...
