A quick question - does anyone know whether Steve has ever recorded a studio version of Clap?

I haven't heard, have you checked his solo albums out?
I saw a Yessongs video for some time ago. Steve was performing The Clap and shaking like hell with hilarious expressions on his face. What a laugh.

CLAP is a wonderful tune. I don't know of a studio take, but I wouldn't be surprised if one was recorded for THE YES ALBUM, but not used in favor of the live version.
When I first bought THE YES ALBUM, I saw THE CLAP on the tracklist and wondered if it was going to be a song about VD.
Some people don't realize the song is called CLAP, not THE CLAP, which was a typographical error on TYA cover.
When I first bought Frank Zappa's CHUNGA'S REVENGE album, I played the track called THE CLAP first, curious to see if it was a Zappa version of Steve's song. It is instead about two minutes of overdubbed drums & percussion played by Frank.
On more than one occasion I've heard CLAP used as background music on the news, and in local tv commercials.
A friend of mine years ago, very into Jefferson Airplane & Hot Tuna had a bootleg record of Jorma Kaukonen, playing an acoustic solo concert. We listened to it one day, and right after Jorma played his signature acoustic instrumental EMBRYONIC JOURNEY, the bootleggers added Steve's performances of CLAP from TYA and MOOD FOR A DAY from Yessongs. My friend wasn't into Yes, but I was, and I recognized the recordings right away.
The bootleg cover listed the songs as JORMA STRUT and SPANISH TUNE. My friend was a bit heartbroken when he learned that it wasn't JORMA playing CLAP (Jorma Strut) and MOOD (Spanish Tune). He then played SALLY WHERE'S YOU GET YOUR LIQUOR FROM off Hot Tuna's PHOSPHORESCENT RAT album. Low and behold, Jorma and Steve certainly have some guitar picking styles in common. My friend soon learned the pleasures of YES after this, and he introduced me to Airplane & Tuna.

I loved it.
Many channels between Hot-Tuna & Howe!
They both know 'Crossroads' as a Robert Johnson tune, not a Cream song...
Ragtime is the audial-version of Robert Crumb, and thank gawd!!!
Starship Trooper: the world's most ever-phaseshifted cosmic guitar-anthem of all time has as it's heart...
a ragtime tune...
Jorma and Howe/Howe & Jorma... not a stretch by a longshot i-and-i!
Nice observations!
