ok, after seeing the opinions of many yesfans, it all comes down to 3 albums, ctte, tales, and relayer. i vote for CTTE.

CTTE is near and dear to my heart as it is the first Yes album that I had ever heard and it is what brought me into the fold but when I heard Tales, I fell in love with it.

It's a tough choice and the margin is very slim between the two but if I was stranded on an island and I could only have 1 of them it would definitely be TFTO.

I voted for CTTE, but only because my first impulse wasn't there. That was Going for the One, primarily because of Awaken.

Difficult choice : both three are pure classic Yes but I voted for Close to the Edge.

Plastic Man

GFTO is a good album, but its not THAT good. no way can it be up there with those 3 other albums. awaken is just about the only thing worth listening to on that album. the other songs are GOOD, and awaken is great, but no way can that album compare.

03-13-2002, 11:51 AM
Absolutely, Plastic Man.

You have to understand something...Awaken is my favorite Yessong of all time. When I want emotional Yes,(it gets me everytime) that is the song I play, and its what will be played at my funeral.

Plastic Man
03-13-2002, 01:25 PM
well long distance runaround is my fav song of all time, but i didnt put fragile on that list. also i think heart of the sunrise is the second best yessong ever (behind ctte), but i still dont put fragile on there. simply because those 3 on there are the best. the material is strong the whole way through.

CTTE is a great album, I just prefer GFTO...so shoot me;)

CTTE just shades it fo me.

I will say that CTTE is the greatest work that YES has in their whole catalogue. The musicianship is first rate.VERY clean and precise. But brought together as an underliner to Jons piercing poetry. Not just lyrics...sheer poetry. And you and I being the best example of Mr.Anderson at his most brilliant.Joe

It would be Relayer, althouth GFTO, 90125, and Talk are up there also. If live albums were included, Yessongs would be above them all. Tales would have been a great single album.

Now Jack, you KNOW we will have to agree to disagree on that one!

I had a conversation with someone on this site who said that Tales should have been even longer. Now that is more possible than going down to a single album. I believe Tales to be the most perfect art form in all of human creation. So even the idea of increasing it would require serious consideration--but cutting it down? No, never.

jack gowen: I always wished YES had carved up the Topographic songs and reararanged a verse here and there so they had put out a single album of nine or ten short songs. As much as I love YES' long songs--and would never think of doing anything like this to Close to the Edge or Relayer--I've also always liked how YES was (and is) equally talented at the 4 min song with a great hook. Topographic long songs format sounds a bit forced to me, like they were almost fighting against the fact that they potentially had a lot of great short songs hidden in there.

03-24-2002, 02:14 PM
Well, YesNY, I suppose you and I will have to agree to disagree on that one. I'm sure you are not alone though and I'd bet Jack Gowen agrees with you.

Welcome to the site YesNY!

Welcome!! You need to know that yessiree thinks Tales is the greatest album ever made in the history of humankind by anyone. I applaud her conviction and devotion, really. However, Tales was a drug album for me in the 70's, and now I just can't sit and listen to the whole thing. I do believe it has some great, great moments, but also way too much "padding". It's like Yes' version of the White Album. Lots of great music, but not enough to justify a double album.

But let's face it--it was released in 73. Things were different then!!!

Jack, you make me laugh out loud! You are too funny. Correct---- but too funny! hahaha

Just to add for clarifications's sake, Tales is the greatest piece of art in all of humankind as well.

And Yes things were different in 1973.... A lot different.

Nightliner and I are in complete agreement on this one. GFTO is not on there.

If you are going to make me pick a favorite, then you might as well kill me now and then play Awaken!!! Cause I can't do that!!!!

As much as I love it all I had to say Close to the Edge because I over played the hell out of it for a very long time and still can't get sick of a single note of it. I can say the same of much of the others but when it comes down to looking at all the copies I've worn out and the ones I've tried to repair enough to get a tease from, CTTE has the biggest count.
It's so hard to make choices like these but somebody has to do it.

Well Jack I can certainly see how someone would take it seriously. It was starting to sound good to me!

Regarding astral travel, that has not happened yet so I don't imagine that it will. I'm only able to see God when I hear Tales and that's enough for me.

Yeah, but the joke was at the end...oh well.

Is Tales THAT important to you, or is that sarcastic? I get closest to God through silent meditation and prayer, which is sometimes difficult because I'm only alone at times like this.

Maybe this should be on another thread, but with meditation silence is golden... jack...

Regarding Tales being THAT important to me... Well, it is as important to me as a piece of art can be. If that means anything. You can be assured that there is no sarcasm in me when I speak of Tales.

4) Tales

3) Talk
2) Relayer
1) Yessongs

Worst:
5) OYE

3) Union
2) Tormato

Seeing as you've gotten my interest re-kindled in Tales, the next time you are in an 'altered state' why don't you listen to 'Endless Dream'. It's very 'out there' so to speak....Remember...

Change we must as surely time does.....

While CLOSE TO THE EDGE and GOING FOR THE ONE are in constant battle for my 1st place best YES album, it occurs to me that if I lived in a very strict place that allowed me to only own ONE album by each band I liked - YESSONGS would be the winner. Thankfully I don't know of a place that would make me do this!

I must have missed this thread earlier. But I cant believe that we only got the three to select from as My all time favorite isn't there.

For me The Yes Album. is the best, Tales would come in 2nd or 3rd and CTTE and Relayer would be in the top ten. But I cant find any "flaw" in TYA. Every note is perfect every lyric is perfect. It is just YES perfection to me. Thats not to say that the three listed aren't great Yes albums, but they have something missing that TYA doesn't. maybe its because it was my very first album I heard. I don't know??. But I must also agree with an earlier post on this one that Awaken is the all time No1 Yes number. Now look up perfection in the dictionary and the meaning will say "Awaken by Yes".

Can't believe how poorly Relayer is doing. Man, I know this is subjective, but really...It was the culmination of ideas that they STARTED on Close to the Edge. I LOVE CTTE, (and TFTO for that matter). To me they form a trilogy, (or quadrilogy, as it were), so please don't get me wrong. I'm just really surprised that more folks wouldn't go the other way. I expected it to at least tie with CTTE based on so many of the other posts I read around here.

I'm going to be controversial and go for Union/ABWH - the albums listed are great albums and I just can't decide between them. CTTE certainly was a creative peak for the band a move to much more complex and intricate songs and a longer duration. My only problem with CTTE is over exposure in live concerts, also true to some extent of YA, F as well. Having said that my favourite Yessong of all time is AYAI. Union and ABWH are the modern YEs style and have freshness about them, these songs also rarely get played live.

This was a hard choice since both CTTE and Relayer have grown on me alot in the last month and I love them as much as Tales but I think for me, Tales JUST about has the edge for some reason. Probably because it was my first Yes album! This opinion is likely to change in the next few months though.

I believe Tales to be the most perfect art form in all of human creation. So even the idea of increasing it would require serious consideration--but cutting it down? No, never.

OK, I'll have to disturb your circles and get your adrenaline flowing :)
I consider Tales to be in need of "destilation" [do you call it that when you destill liquor?].
It is a real treat most of the time, when it's good, it's great, but some parts are just quite frankly not interesting enough to continue so long as it does.

That was very bold of you I must say.
Union is otherwise the fav hate object among Yes-fans it seems.
I can second you that Union is clearly underrated, it's a pity tho that it wasn't a "true" union, with all members playing together on all songs. But some great songs are on it, and it sounds great IMO.

ctte + r both great----just that relayer sounds so unearthly to me -the space metal jazz riffing, the harsh metallic ring of steve's guitar, alan showing off, moraz rising to the challenge,a song like gates where your're swept up in the maelstrom,it demands you care, tbo's beauty,sc's crazy power+gates, indeed the story of mankind....+ the bloody great interior poem by lemkuhl....polishing the brains their bones release*...indeed!

Well all those are pretty amazing but they have all been blown out of the water by the new album 'INNOVATION' a truly mind blowing album!

I agree, Innovation is by far the best, I love all 3 of these, but I picked Relayer, I guess Im still listenig to Sounds being Chased by Steve, but Innovation is far and away the best of Yes

Of these three definitive masterpieces I would have to choose CTTE.

hasn't CTTE won a few of these polls already?????

Yes! There are many threads devoted to this topic. It's just that this site is very large and some threads get lost or a newbie hasn't found one.

Btw,
My vote ~ CTTE

Close To The Edge is good, but Relayer is better, mainly because GOD is a better song than CTTE. IMHO :lmao: :dnce:

Tales, Tales, Tales. I am a little surprised that CTTE is leading by such a huge margin (as I post this at midday, June 12). A nice album, but better than Tales? Bah!

For me, it's Relayer, but there's no wrong answer to this question. Everybody's different. No, actually....wait a minute...It IS Relayer. No matter who you are. ;-)

Okay, I'm slightly miffed at this one, because my favorite Yes album is Fragile. But my favorite on the list is Relayer. "Gates" is the best Yes song ever, and I enjoy "Sound Chaser" as well, even though it's totally incomprehenisble.

My vote has,I think!,to be for TFTO.I recently listened to the whole piece in one sitting, taking this into account the complete 'symphony' is a Wagnerian masterwork (which IMO is what I think Jon had in mind) and the culmination in RITUAL is truly mind blowing and worthy of the classical comparison.

Some choice. Realyer and Tales belong on a poll for Yes's worst album. I listened to Relayer three times over the weekend just to see if I was missing something.

The best? Close To The Edge

My Favorite? Tales

My favorite single track? To Be Over, from Relayer

I voted for Tales because CTTE has plenty enough votes.

But isn't this the same thing we are trying to get at with those endless Elimination rounds??!! ;)

Out of these three, Close To The Edge.

"Close to the Edge" is close to the edge of realization, of self
realization, that's what the theme was all about.

"And You and I" today has more power now than it ever had. It is a remarkable piece of music, as though it were crafted by the heavens and we were just the vehicles to pull it together.

~ Jon Anderson (1992) Yesstories

Still the ultimate in YES for me.
