View Full Version : Which Version Do You Prefer?

03-12-2002, 11:20 AM
i-and-i started me thinking about the idea of which version of Jon's songs I preferred and thought it might make an interesting poll. Here are the ones I'm thinking of. You might have others. If so, please start another poll.

For the next 5 posts, I will be re-entering the texts. So even though my name is listed as the author, in reality, they belong to those listed below. I've resubmitted the entire post so multiple choices can be made. Sorry for the confusion.

Basically I prefer all of the Change we Must versions. The other potential poll would be Boundaries from Animation, O'er from The Promise Ring and Someday, Somehow from Open Your Eyes - basically three versions of the same song. An interesting thing about the recycling of these songs is how the composers are listed differently. For example, Its on Fire on City of Angels is cowritten with D. Freeman, but Under the sun on Change we Must is just listed as being written by Jon.

I tend to like the versions I heard first. I heard Hurry Home, for example, on City, so that's my favorite of that song. I heard State first on Change we Must, so I like that one. It' skinda like Dr. Who; you trend to like the first doctor you saw the best.

I think Squireaholic has a point. Except I prefer the Hearts version on Change We Must over the one on 90125. But overall, I heard City of Angels and Friends of Mr. Cairo first so I tend to prefer those versions. The one song that seems most different to me is State of Independence. It seems that in the City of Angels version, Jon sings in a more soulful way. When he sings, "Touching my body my soul", it just jumps out of the speakers in the City of Angels version. I also like the semi-reggae beat of that version too. I loved the clapping throughout the song and I liked when Jon punctuated the song with those "Hey, Hey" vocalizations. Kind of attention getting. And I liked the reprise at the very end. But the thing that gets me the most about this particular version is that the note that Jon sings on and then later the sax comes in on feels almost like an electric charge running through me. I can't quite describe it. It's like there is a certain sound that--this is not a good description but it's a close as I can get--it's like a 60 cycle hum--you know how when it's on, it kind of goes through your body? Well it does mine anyway-- It's kind of like that phenomena. The one thing that I do like about the Change We Must version is that there is no saxaphone. I'm not particularly fond of that instrument but I have come to be ok with it in the City of Angels version. Also, I just saw that we can't make multiple choices on this as I had hoped. I'm going to try to get that fixed so we can vote for each version as I wanted to set it up originally. Sorry for the delay. Let me know if you have not been able to vote for what you wanted because of this problem and I'll enter your votes.

I presume you mean the Friends of Mr Cairo version of State of Independence. I think that the first version of any song heard sets a benchmark, but sometimes it works in reverse. Hearts is a good example - I was unimpressed with it on 90125 but love it on Change we Must. You are entirely correct, BrianD, on both counts. Thank you for the clarification.

On a different note, I was informed that this thread will have to be deleted and the poll restarted to get it to work correctly. I will attempt to retain all the original numbers and all of your comments and re-enter them. So when you come back, if things look a little different, that's why. Also, as the poll will be done over, you can vote again and be able to vote for the multiple choices I originally intended.

So, it does end up looking a bit goofy but at at least all of the comments were able to be spared. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for your patience.

Helloo Pat, & fellow Yesfans-

Been busy busy, and my computer has been working
hard processing audio. Our [Guano boys] CD is finally off
at the duplicators!

Hope everyone is enjoying lots of Yes-related goodness!
[nudge nudge, wink wink]

In your poll, It's on Fire was originally on City of Angels,
Liked this version, but freaked when I heard Under the Sun!
BTW, my friend Steve on LI named his sailboat Short Stories.
Keep those speakers away from your compass, Steve!

Blessings, Shallel

Round and round my Heart
The senses are yearning... "

Guano Boys have just finished 4 songs toward their next CD, recorded in Bobby Read's studio in North Garden, Virginia!! The songs feature all the usual Guanos plus guest appearances by Bobby Read on tenor saxophone (Bruce Hornsby, Moderico) and John D'Earth, trumpet extraordinaire.

Recently Guano Boys have added alto saxophonist Andy Rowland and Nate Hawkes to the lineup. Together this horn section is adding some spicy flavor to the jerked Guano dishes. See a review of Andy and Nate and their Musician Profiles.

Flash! Guano Boys have scheduled another recording date for October 7th at Bobby Reads studio to round out their CD plans.

I had the same reaction. I wonder why it was re-named.

You know, McCartney tried to re-record some Beatles songs and the results were disastrous. Jon's versions of Yessongs aren't much better. I much prefer the Yes versions. Nothing against Jon, but he is a PART of the band, not the band itself, which made the magic in the first place...Jack...

I've never heard Jon try to do Yes material by himself. I could never quite see it though. But we all know that he is the Wonder Man, so I would not put anything past him. His solo stuff is so fab!

Hey gang -

I'll post more about Guano Boys soon in the appropriate thread.
I'm the keyboard player. I'm not on the website, [guanoboy.com] yet, but it should be updated soon.
On a more related note, I saw Vangelis' Mythodea concert
on WNET the other night and it was mind blowing. He must have
had 200 people on stage, at the Temple of Zeus in Athens.
Mythodea was dedicated to NASA's Mars Odyssey mission.
I could not get over how it sounded almost the same with 200
Choirs, strings, brass, timpani, and vocalists as Vangelis
sounds all by himself! If you get the chance check it out.
What an amazing musician!

Love & music, Shallel

Sittin here in the television, lookin at the tube sittin next to me...

Hey there shallel! WNET? Isn't that a PBS affiliate? I hope it gets to be broadcast in St. Louis. I'd love to see it. Thanks for the heads up.

And do tell us more about the Guano Boys when you get a chance.

I prefer the Yes version of any song rather than the solo versions. That would include Hearts, Owner of a Lonely Heart (from Friends and Relatives and also Symphonic Music and ABWH Live), and The More You Live.

The Yes versions are always better.

Did you hear what McCartney did to those Beatles songs in Give My Regards to Broad Street? YIKES!!!!
