I can recall the first day I purchased this album (CD's Were not out yet) and I thought the album cover was not a Roger Dean work and I thought I would not approve of the music. I was blown away by the tracks the band but together and I am still a big fan of this one.

Ahh, giving away your age a bit! You picked a great place to start out the new year....welcome to the site and Happy New Year.
GFT1 is one of my favorite albums. Awaken is my favorite Yes song. The artwork never even occured to me when I bought the album (which was also before CD's came out). Awaken alone blew me away, Wonderous Stories...close behind. GFT1 just rocks and Turn of the Century has made me cry. Parallels is probably my least favorite, but still a great song.

Same with me... I remember when the album came out and I was totally disappointed with the art work and I did not buy or listen to GFTO for months. A friend of mine insisted that I listen to the album and forget about the art work. He was right and I was wrong. Great album.

I couldn't wait to get that platter home. Wasn't concerned with the art work altho I did miss the Dean touch. When GFTO queued up I thought "wow- tremendous"! Then Jon pipe's up with the lyrics and I'm like gads what the heck is this crap. It was almost embarrassing. Of course, in time it became one of my faves and still is.

I had been a Yes fan for many years when Going For The One came out. They had accomplished several great lps and did their solo albums, I guess it was a much needed break for them. The wait seemed like forever, but when it finally came out I felt it was well worth the wait. It was a fresh beginning. To the point songs - and of course Awaken. A very polished sound throughout. What a gem Turn of the Century is. Going For The One puts my mood right every time. I love them so much for it!!

i was not alive when this album came out. i first heard it in a (shock) downloaded version. at the time, i had only fragile and close to teh edge. i downloaded, the yes album, tales, relayer, and going for the one. the short tracks on going were always my favorite, but awaken was always kind of put on back burner (it wasn't until i listened to the house of blues version that i awakened to the amazing potential of this track). I LOVED jon's hilarious high pitched vocals on the title track. i play it for people sometimes and have them guess if it's a man or woman. everybody has always said man, but only because "you wouldn't have asked me if it was a woman, because i would have thought it was if you hadn't asked." :D <3 you jon.
