Or what some such hushed wildlife documentarian might say, especially if he works for the BBC or is Michael Palin pretending to be a hushed wildlife documentarian... :)
Heyla, hola. Hmm. What to say, really, that doesn't sound irretrievably stupid.
HI! :) My name's Jean, but I go by Jaye or Phoenix (insert your favorite X-Men joke here, I've heard it already ;).
Sadly, I've only seen Yes live once (gasp, horror!), but that was a loverly show up in Auburn Hills (Detroit), MI in May of 2004. Ye gods, what a beautiful show. The Roger Dean stage props were just beautiful, especially since they could light up easily, and it was nearly a transcendant experience. Fortunately, there are pictures floating around of the set, including ones of the band during the concert. Not the best of quality, but at least it's a gateway to memory. After the concert, I politely accosted one of the ushers for a copy of the setlist, and then raided my collection of CDs to compile and burn an exact replica of the concert in order, which has remained in my car ever since, most often alternating with my Rush compilations.
I've been a YesFan here since that concert, but in real life, I've been a fan of Yes for, oh, since the 80s. Y'see, /everyone's/ heard 'Owner of a Lonely Heart', as the band's greatest pop-culture/mainstream success, but I didn't know that was Yes. However, I knew of this totally amazing voice that sang this song in the movie Legend, and I was totally blown away. Being too young to truly understand then, all I knew was This Voice. Didn't know who the singer was for a few years, until I started investigating. Found out about Yes. My favorite song for many years was 'Your Move/I've Seen All Good People'. The whole Alice in Wonderland imagery very much appealed to me. Still, it didn't really hit me until 1995, when I'd gone to England for a 4-month study abroad. I had to pack enough CDs to last for that long time, so I had to pick compilations. Taking Yesstory with me as well as ABWH, I managed to survive and also acquire an appreciation for a wider range of Yes music, including a thirst for more.
Well, it's been a decade since nearly, my passport's expired, but I still love Yes. With utterly no disrespect intended to any other member of the band, since their musicianship is tremendous, and each's contribution valued and adored, I do have to say that my favorite of the gentlemen is Jon, simply because of his voice.
As for myself... I'm located in Cincinnati, Ohio, although I consider my spiritual homes to be Pennsylvania, Maryland, and the British Isles. I am owned by four cats, and I have an overweening fondness for Stargate, both SG-1 and Atlantis. I write and play both video and text adventure games in my spare time (MUSHing, yay!), and even in the wilds of SouCon MUSH, a game set in Anne McCaffrey's Pern universe, there can be a dragon egg whose shell bears an uncanny resemblance to Roger Dean's floating islands artwork...
I joined YesFans right after the concert in May, but I've been woefully bad about trying to catch up on the history of the forum and get everything caught up. It's just... mindboggling, almost intimidating, but after reading the greetings from others in this particular board, and getting reminded about the raffle, I figured perhaps now was the time, as they sing.
So, thanks for such a cool hangout. Hopefully I won't drown in those topographic oceans as I try to catch up on what's going on. :)
Jaye.
