Yesterday I had the misfortune to buy the Yesspeak DVD two disc set. I've got to say that this is an absolute rip-off. It gives the impression that the DVD was recorded during the 35th anniversary tour (which I attended in Montreux). It gives an impressive range of 'tracks included' on the back, but fails to point out that this is far from 'live video tracks', in fact they are audio only. The rest of the DVD is taken up with self-indulgant nonsense by each of the band members.
If I had wanted 'audio only', I would have bought the CD!
Buyers beware!!
I would have expected better from Yes!

You should have researched it. I bought it knowing exactly what I was getting and I enjoyed it.

Welcome to the site Steven.
Sorry for your annoyance in this, but having been a Yes fan for more years than I care to remember, I know how good their management is at either repackaging something I've already bought or giving the impression something is what it turns out not to be - exactly on the box. Though you could argue that Yes SPEAK was a pretty big clue. Let the buyer beware.

Steven,
I'm sorry, some of the comments here are less than helpful! Unfortunately with Yes DVD releases, they don't always do what they say on the tin so to speak. This particular one is, as you quite rightly point out, poor and should be avoided IMHO.
With their DVD releases, it's a case very much of 'buyer beware.' Next time, check here first before buying.
If you want a decent Yes DVD try Symphonic or Acoustic Yes (which although brief, is very well put together).
Hurry back!

I rather enjoy it myself....It DOES state that the tracks are AUDIO ONLY on the back...Rick is a scream on this :D

I found a copy of this on Ebay for only $5.99 so I have no complaints. I might have taken issue with it if I had spent $25.00. I found the interviews interesting although nothing was said that hasn't been in print somewhere before. Rick is a real riot on this DVD. Considering the DVD is around 3 hours of a YES documentary and another 3 hours of audio performance I really can't complain. I love YES and so am perhaps more forgiving then some. I'll watch it again for sure.

I knew going in that it might not be the greatest but I figured, if nothing else, at least I'd have a live concert from a tour I got to see to enjoy and that all of Chris and Rick's segments would be funny and I'm a big Who fan so I thought I might enjoy Roger Daltrey's narration. Also, I got it marked down from it's list price.
The documentary was okay. Some of it was pretty funny and I learned some new things and it answered some of my questions about what's life like for Yes when they're on the road. However I found most of Roger's narration to be awkward. This was not his normal speaking voice. He came off like someone selling life insurance. Of course he wasn't given a very good script to work with either. I wish Rick had personally hosted/ narrated it. He was great on the Roger Dean DVD. Also, there's some very weak computer effects peppered through the film, horrid mixing and much editing and tightening needed. Yesspeak has nothing on Yesyears IMO.
The concert was quite good and that was the main reason I bought the package.

Yesspeak isn't bad at all. As a documentary it works pretty well (though Yesyears is better), but I'm very disappointed they didn't realease a full show from that wonderful tour! I found The Full Circle Tour slightly better than The 35th Anniversary Tour. It's even more frustrating when we can see they have plenty of very nice footage which is shown on Yesspeak. Wonder why they decided to put a documentary instead of a well mixed and produced full gig.

Good comment Ktrek, I agree with you.
And it was marketed as a doco. so how can we complain about it?
However, it always makes me want to see the accompanying concert footage as a show in its own right, too.
Though it wouldn't be legal, so I wouldn't ever do it; (truly as I'm under oath, your Honour) and I don't expect anyone else to either.... - the audio disc with sound 'ripped' onto a cd would be an extra bonus... But as it's not permissable, well...Forget that. (#$@%*)

I wouldn't mind this DVD at all if the audio wasn't so F'd up. I can't hear the band talk when the music pumps up...I can't hear the narration if the music pumps up...a lot of the dialogue simply goes out the windo because of the unfortuante mix..
I have yet to watch and or listen to this on a 5.1 system..is it any better???
There's some humorous stuff on this DVD, as well as a little insight..
But I find Yesyears far superior

Yep, I agree. We got exactly what was expected.
In my case I got a little more than expected.
Just after Jon says "We came, we saw, we conquered - I used to have a conker, it was a three-er" - (near the end), it passes to two little kids having their programmes signed by Alan. MY two little kids...can you say AAAAHHH?
Unfortunately Sean is wearing an Arsenal top....I really need to spend more time with that boy!! :-)

I just finished watching this DVD. I really enjoyed it. There were lots of funny bits with each of the guys. I especially like the part about having to buy 2 airplane tickets- one for Steve Howe and one for Steve Howe's guitar! The live concert segments were outstanding and I like the slideshow that they put together to accompany the audio only set feature. I'm glad that I bought it. I'm not sure how often I would watch it all again but I will definitely listen to the music only section again for sure.

Overall I quite like Yesspeak, it does drag on a bit on the interview level, but what I can't stand is Roger Daltrey's narration..it is crass and he is obviously reading from a script with no personal feeling for the band what so ever. It would be a lot better without his narration.

I got this for Christmas and I enjoyed it a lot even though it's kind of superficial. One thing that came very clear to me: Jon as we know is still searching for The Source. Steve Howe found it a long time ago - it's his Gibson.
By the way - I am not up on band spouses - was that Chris's current one?
Lastly, the live set is killer and worth the price of the DVD for me. Why wasn't this made into a live DVD, the clips in the documentary look pristine?

I am thinking of buying this DVD online, but would like to know what exactly is on it as far as whether all the songs are live or not. I've done some searching on the web and have been unable to find a website that lists the playlist in a way that indicates what songs are live and which songs are studio versions. Does anyone know where I can go to get a complete listing of the content of this DVD?
