View Full Version : Fish Out Of Water Part II, and my recent phone conversation with Chris Squire....

I was blown away too.
I'm good friends with Scotty...
I've hung-out with Chris once, other than the usual 'backstage' scenarios...
Amazingly, I had the honor of 'jabbering' with Chris on the phone the other night.
The present is sweet.
If you could say one thing to Chris at leisure, what would it be?
...Chris wanted me to know that he really LIKES Neil Diamond, and that his comparison, in another thread, of my music and Neil's music, was meant as a compliment... Should I inject another apostrophy?
...Damn Chris. I was amazed that you even listened to my CD, much less posted about it...
"We're not worthy! We're not worthy!"
Just don't compare me to Barry Manilow, ok? Pleese?!
Hehehe!
I quickly changed the subject...
"Chris! You know, you really should record a follow-up to 'Fish Out Of Water'. It was an amazing album, and I'd love to hear something similar from you..."
"I could call it Fish Out Of Depth..."
"No, call it 'Flying Fish'..."
"'Flying Fish', I like that..."
We talked of otherstuff, mostly just how I wished that he and Scotty were at our party, that we were indeed 'Squired', and wish I could have handed them a pipe...
It was a really cool moment, my friends. I live a rich life.
Fish Out Of Water II. What do you think?
Love,
Earlie

My only comment is that you are clearly not a 'Fish out of Water' Earl!

I learned how to swim at an early age.
Methinks that is a good thing...

Well, what we all want from His fishness, is to hear about a new Yes album, and that he works hard to make a stand within the music. I mean the cunning and subtle arrangements of music that I really think is the trademark of Chris.

Chris is the keeper of the flame, strangely, Jon answers to him.
And I require anew YES album...
As well as FOOW Mach II.

On a serious note, I can't believe that you'd take being compared to N.D. as an afront Earlie. He's a great songwriter, although they shouldn't have let him sing. At least Chris had the sight to clarify his statement. He clarified a few thoughts to me as well. They wern't cryptic either.......

Oops, must stay on-topic. I'm not sure if we'll ever get a FOOW follow-up. Seems he keeps getting caught up in other projects. We've got the new Conspiracy DVD coming out very soon, as well as a SYN project in the works. We've also got a new Ye... Oh nevermind ;)

Hey Earl, I'll take yer songs over Neil's any day, man. You can tell Mr. Squire I said so! :D
[*edit: I just mailed a couple discs of live Earl Grey off to soulsearcher and raved a bit about "Strangest of Times" and about the HepC benefit in general. I'm not playin' around, here!]

Ya know somewhere out there there is someone who is saying There's no way that they talked to Chris Squire on the phone.
We did, honest. :D
BTW I like Neil Diamond!
Flying Fish would make a great title
but I'll take what ever Chris decides come out with.
I can't wait for the new Conspiracy DVD that will be way cool.

Well, I'd rather keep em' guessing. But if they want to see my darned phone bill they can. That wasn't one of my brighter moments, calling them on my cell crybby: Should've grabbed yours Kathy. :banghead: Stupid booze.........

I gave up waiting for the follow up to FOOW years ago. Chris has promised it many times, for example on the Yesyears video, then again a few years later, then again it cropped up on the Yesspeak DVD and each time.......nothing.
I'll believe it when I see it

Earl I am intrigued! What is your Music? What Band?? I am still quite new and I did not know we had the likes of Mr. Squire posting in here! Wonderful. ! I am still trying to put together our Band project and take it to the next level. I did not know you have CD's I am impressed. I would like to buy one man, give me an address dude.
You mentioned; what one may like to ask Chris, if we had the opportunity?
I am still trying to find a nice photograph of him and that fantastic Rickenbacker 8 string bass he has. So I guess short of asking him to stop by my home and jam with us and have a few laughs and try out the 4003 I am converting to an 8 string Potato Head! I would have to ask him if he could find a photograph of "Himself" and "that elusive bass", somewhere, and be kind enough to let me buy a copy? I don't know I guess it would be tacky to offer to buy it?
Actually I guess it would be difficult to even speak with this guy after cursing his name under my breath so many times in the practice room! I'd feel guilty and spend most of my time apologizing for it. Every time I feal I have a song down I find another little spot that he has thrown something in I did not hear the first one hundred times I played it!
Nice Earl, I have a feeling Chris is an absolute Pisser to hang out with for any time. What a wonderful and giant sized life he has lived so far! Bet he has some real funny stories about life on the road.
I am very pleased to be returning to Music after so many years of letting it go by the wayside. I know now that with all the right choices I have made, and as successful as I have become in other areas of my life, it is music that I regret giving up on.
It still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up a little every time we get a song to sound perfect and all the instruments are going. You kind of get lost in the moment and your voice and your hands just seem to be doing it without concentrating! That only happens to me "very rarely" most of the time it's hard work and concentration and I never (really) hear the song I just played! I have to ask everyone else what it sounded like until we replay the tape. It must be something to be as talented as Chris, Rick, Steve, Alan and Jon and All of these guy's who are still at the very top of their game. They must get that wonderful rush of "musical euphoria" all the time! What a life! It's like the best high there is!
Hey I am ramblin again! Sorry!
Earl If you ever get the chance could you tell Chris for me he's the biggest Pain in the A** musician I have ever tried to copy musically! Eccept for, perhaps, Steve? It's a toss up?? I guess God but how I love it! When I get one of his runs It makes me grin from ear to ear! He is a task. They all are!...... and they have my absolute humble respect and full attention!

What ever his next solo release is.....I'm In!!!!!
Earl, ask Chris if he can give me any pointers on the opening ostinatos played in the first 3 minutes of The Ancient. I've tried Alan, but no response, yet.

HAHAHA, yeah it's true. I was there. It was at my Liquor Locust party when this happened. I talked to him too. Kind of surreal, because I was talking to Scotty first, then she put him on the phone and Chris started asking ME questions! It was pretty mundane--things like "What are you doing in California?" plus a few other things. Afterwards, I couldn't stop laughing for a few minutes because it was just so bizarre.

I have had a strange incident my self?
Nothing as personal as a Telephone conversation but no less interesting?
I was posting in a Rickenbakcer guitar Forum about this Ric Bass I have that I am converting to look like Chris's 8 String Ric. he used often back in 1977.
I got two emails at home from John Hall the owner of Rickenbacker Guitars! I just about fell out of my chair! The little information I was recieving from that group was not only wrong but at times confrontational? He told me he has had a few problems himself with some of the members currently active on that site! And proceeded to give me a wealth of information I needed. Great Great guy to take the time!
Well I was floored to get a personal email from this guy! He is "The Creator" for us Rickenbacker fans.
About a week later I get an Email from Chris Squire! I fell out of my chair again! At least that's the way it was signed,
He said he had read my messages and found my threads about this project quite humorus! and he also told me I have "Creative Tenacity" and that this was certainly not a bad thing to have. He also reiterated the point that I was not getting much in return for my efforts on the Forum??? I tried to email him back to tell him I would like to send a few photo's of this bass when it's done, and to thank him for his encouragement, but the emails just came back to me? I suppose he has a secure site set up considering how many of us Chris Squire fans there are? I am wondering if in a private message someone here could answer me, or in a reply to this post, and help me when the time comes to send him an email concerning this bass I am working on? I admire this guy, and have for along long time, and I would love to here his comments about what I have made.
Hope this is not a question that is in poor taste? I just don't know if I want to bother John Hall with this? Ya know? It will be another Month or so before this is ready ?
Thanks you guy's and girls are certainly an interesting bunch! what a true cast of characters we would all be in a room together!
Creatively Tenacious Randy

Chris is recording with The Syn again right now. I've got a real good feeling that this could be something special.
