View Full Version : What's Your Occupation, YESFan?

Let's find out what we all do to earn the bread to by all that YES stuff? Might be interesting to see how similar or dissimilar we are -- occupationally speaking. I'm making this multiple choice because some of us work in occupations that cross lines. let's see what happens.
If we see a tendency emerge, what are we gona do????
What does it mean?
Engineer turned neuropsychologist
Journalist and musician on the side
Right now I'm a kind of commercial assistant and translator in an embassy (Spanish-French and less frequently English). I hope nobody from my work get the idea to browse Yes sites.

Working in Advertising on the Media side in NYC. Want to get back into music though!
... in a school for regular, normal kids aged 16-18 who simply feel that music is what they would most like to be doing right now. So while they're doing that, I sit at the computer browsing Yesfans...
I'm a classically trained pianist, but I play everything I can lay my hands on, if they'll let me...

I've worked in the Australian Post office for the last 18yrs. I've worked in all areas from retail, admin and delivery. I am presently the nightshift supervisor for all mail deliverys into the Central Business District of Perth. Thats how I get to listen to plenty of Yes music. I have the office all to my self at night and only miss my music when my work takes me out onto the shop floor.

So, Pawnheart, do you guys do The Simpsons? I hear that's done in Korea.

I am not working on the Simpsons, but this show is done at Korea at Akom Studios in Seoul. There are many studios here in Korea. Many productions are also being done in the Phillipines. China and India.
The creative work is done in the west and the labour intensive animation/inbetweening etc is done in Asia.

Yessiree, I don't want my colleagues to browse Yes sites because I'm not supposed to spend my time on Internet during my working days. I could be in trouble if they knew. Whenever I'm on Yesfans, I'm in danger !
Flo, good luck to your clandestine operations!
I too have to be careful about spending too much time on Yesfans during working hours. But the working hours here are pretty loose anyway, plus I can get away with some pretty lame excuses about investigating the contemporary music scene etc...
"...spending too much time on Yesfans..." That's a contradiction in terms, sorry...
... Never enough actually, Rogo !
Oh, I see Flo. You would think that your employer would be proud to have employed someone with such high standards and good taste. Yet another reason to go out and buy that home computer--so you can be on all the time--like, say, me, for example. HELP, I'M SUCKED IN AND I CAN'T GET OUT!!!
Yes, yessiree, I think you are definitely encouraging Flo into an all-consuming black hole --- if it is hard to stay off the forum at work it is even harder at home, and pretty soon even food sleep and sex will be distant memories ...
Quantum, I don't want to come to such an extreme way of life. So far I still sleep and do other things than Yes. I think, after reading your comments, that I should not buy a personal computer.
LOL -- Flo, if you make that decision, you will have definitely taken yourself out of harm's way!!!

I'm sorry if that is happening to you Quantum. Perhaps more time off your computer would be productive for you. Somehow I think Flo would be able to manage nicely. And it would be so nice to see more of her too.
Maybe, try to see the bright side--the good in things a little more Quantum. Maybe then life won't seem so much like an all-consuming black hole. Just trying to be helpful.

Flo, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your employer probably already knows that you use your PC at work for personal reasons. I would encourage an at home version as well. The same is possible with alot of jobs it seems- the employer discourages internet use at work by it's employee's, and in fact most of them make the employee read, and sign a "business code of conduct", which outlines their rules, and in most cases makes it known that use of the internet may include termination! Then they go ahead and make it available anyway. It seems like a trap to me! :(
Well you know Tom, all businesses are not the same. If a business provides internet access, they know employees will use it. I work in a place that is quite micro-managed. They don't care if I use the internet as long as I get my work done and as long as I am not downloading porno or gambling on line. If my place allows that, I'd bet Flo's place is not any more restrictive.

02-27-2002, 10:49 PM
I work for a very large company and they did have us sign a code of conduct for internet usage. But before I had my own computor I would surf at work. This is how I found this site although I never signed on as a member until I bought my own PC.I do know some folks who have been "caught"looking or spending too much time at various un-work related sites. One ended as a dismissal, the other as a reprimand.I would do my looking after hours mostly,on my own time.I limited my time to about 10 minutes because of pure paranoia.Big Brother and all...
Probably the operative word here is "code of conduct". Perhaps each company has their own idea of what is acceptable. Brian do you remember if the thing you signed addressed the issue of internet usage for pleasure as opposed to restricting usage that involves porno/harrassment/religious bigotry/gambling?

Perpetual Motion Machine. with a minor in Cognition.
In reply to previous posts (Yessiree and co.), I didn't sign any code of conduct regarding Internet or whatsoever at work. Here in France companies are not too worried about it and mainly big firms do that sort of things. I use Internet for professional reasons and of course my employer does know I might use it for personal matters but I doubt he imagines I use it so often during the day for Yes matters. Well as long as I manage to do my work. It makes me switch all day long from French to Spanish (my working language) and English (the Yes language). Very good for the brain indeed.
If it ever does come up Flo, just tell your employer that you are on Yesfans for professional reasons, after all they want you to remain fluent in English, right? Yeah, that's the ticket. It's for professional reasons. And to assist in remaining fluent, they have to fly you to America for the Yes tour here. Yeah, Yeah, that makes sense. It's for your job. You're attempting to increase your value to your employer. Let's try that! hahaha

Flo,
I did not mean to scare you, perhaps it is just my employer, or our country compared to others. I like Pat's affirmative idea concerning Yesfans usage to enhancing your foreign languages!
Honestly though, my company does make us read either on paper, or online at work our "business code of conduct", and believe me, this thing is around 20+ pages long. It strictly outlines internet usage, and more or less tells the employee that if you do it, and get caught.....it's curtains! It of course does emphasize porn, gambling etc., but it outlines internet usage during work hours is strictly prohibited!....
Oh, well.... I really don't care, because while they are wasting their time with all of that crap, I am listening to YES on a CD right on my PC, while doing my work. I still come out ahead!

We do have something in common don't we. Do you manage to get to listen to Yes while you work. Can be a dame boring job "sorting mail". How do you find the night hours. I choose to work nights 3yrs ago to get away from the "Public". I always got the impression that they just saw us as "Public Servants" and ready to kick the s**t out of for no apparent reasons. maybe its different in the US.
Probably not much different here in the US. I've never carried though. I do get to listen to YES all night if I like and usually do. Your right Yes Oz it does get boring, thank god I can listen to YES.

You want to experience boring? Try being an ACCOUNTANT for nine years. I'm only in the gig because it's a somewhat decent living. I hope to become a college-level business educator at some point in the future. I don't hang with accountants, and I don't like accountant-type things like golf, country music and discussing the latest tax provisions. I prefer to hang out with fellow extreme winter sports participants, musicians and educators.

Oz -
Be very grateful you changed your mind. Nobody ever WANTS to be an accountant. You just kind of get sucked into it, like a black hole of mundaneness (is that an actual word?). You can tell people they're getting a tax refund of $2,500.00 and they'll p*ss and moan as to why they can't get $2,550.00. Money can bring out the worst in people. Five more years and I should be teaching.
But, having a CD player with at least a dozen from YES certainly helps me get through the day.
InverYes -
Is the occupation you're referring to the one where you basically look at land all day and take measurements/analysis? Hey, at least you can get outside in those beautiful Canadian winter days!!

I am an academic psychiatrist specialising in treating the elderly - in the US known as 'geriatric psychiatrist' - but I don't like that term as it implies that I am old - though I admit its starting to get that way - in Australia known as a 'psychogeriatrician' or 'old age psychiatrist'. As you can see, one of our biggest problems is to know what to call ourselves!
I am involved in research - treatment of Alzheimer's disease, depression etc - and teaching, so I am kept busy one way or another. Yesfans is a great place to relax!

In between sales calls, you can bet that the YES catalog gets a solid rotation in my car's CD player. As a matter of fact, I've been able to use the music to my benefit - depending on the circumstances leading up to my meeting with clients.
Starting Out a Typical Day "Heart of The Sunrise" or "Awaken"

Is being a daddy. You see, I'm on for 3-4 days then home for 3-4 days. My wife is a stay at home Mom (she took early retirement from the feds a few years back), and we have this old fashioned concept of being a strong family, and that's a job in itself, but I wouldn't trade it for all the world. Sounds trite, but true. And I'm raising my kids right, they know Yes music inside out!! You see, besides my liking Rabin so much, my kids, especially the three oldest, loved Yes with Trevor, knew the songs by heart, and that was cool beyond words. They've lost much interest, but they'll be back if he comes back. (Every once in a while they'll watch HOB Live with me, though).
So, I really have two jobs, but I love them both. Jack.....

Good question. Answers:
1) To socialise with fellow students
2) To gain qualifications
3) To get a discount in many shops around the country (and free cheeseburgers with your Extra Value Meals in Maccie D's!)
4) It means I don't have to get a job
5) It is an excuse to be lazy
I have no idea of what career path I want to go into. Zero idea. Not that I care. My life ambition is actually never to have a proper job.

You know I agree with you about the Jon for president--safer and happier and more fun and everybody being nice to everybody and good music everywhere.....What is better than that? Plus then we could see Jon on tv nearly every day. That would be one press conference I would not turn off. I'd tape every one for posterity. I could then have a pix of the president on my wall. I'm a Distribution Manager for an importer of hand crafted furniture, and my partner (slamsound) is a banker on Wall street, a block away from Ground Zero. He was just coming out of the subway as the first plane hit the WTC. He was one of those people you see running on the news video clips. He was lucky to get out alive, especially since he decided to check in at his office and leave VIA THE SUBWAY. He was trapped underground with all of that smoke filling up the subways only to emerge right smack into a running crowd, blinded by the smoke. When I finally met him at home (I had to walk home, a 2 hour walk, as all transportation was shut down) he had just arrived and he looked like a ghost. Completely covered in white soot. I don't know what I would be doing if things had gone the other way. I'm sure I wouldn't be talking with you folks. I know folks probably get sick of me mentioning my partner all the time, but when you spend 3/4 of your life NOT being able to talk about those things, and then live through something like 9/11, you're constantly reminded of how precious we really are to one another. a lot of patience involved there eh? we have an elementary band class here at school (us college kids picking up instruments we really don't know how to play...kinda like a mock elementary band) and it's sometimes difficult to put up with there!...lol
i'm studying in west chester, pa to be a music educator...not sure what level though. I also assist with my old high school drumline, perform (done musicals, orchestras, symphonic band/wind ensembles, jazz bands, rock bands, whatever)
also during the summer i work at a fast food restaurant (taco bell...ick...so uh...food service? lol)

My folks were grocery people. Mom lasted 28 years in the check stands of several chains (when checkers were checkers and not scanners). Dad spent 38 years managing meat departments for several chains (these were the guys and gals who took a whole, half or quarter of beef, pork and chicken and turned it into steaks, hamburger, chops, and thighs).
I salute you and yours and all of the hard working folk in the grocery store field -- past, present and future!

Well - I don't see my job on the list. I work for the State of Tennessee - so I guess you could classify me as "Government" - in an IT shop - so you might classify me as "Computers" - except that I don't program computers or provide any tech support.
What I actually do is project management, which I didn't see on the list either. I manage what we call "process improvement" projects - which is sort of a TQM thing where we look at how we do business, and devise ways to do it better. Currently I'm working with two groups - one to look at how we receive and track work requests, and one to look at how we should do configuration management (keeping track of all the hardware, software, and any other components that impact a system or project).
So, that's what I do. Guess I just can't be forced into a category!

damn! what's the pay for something like that? ;)
i used to be a gymnastics coach
now, i am the
egg pricing
beer stocking
order checking
produce cooler cleaning
freezer stocking [bbrrrrrrr]
floor sweeping
pizza making
video renting
chick at a small market.
they have new owners and i am finally making a decent wage-for up here, at least..
it is really mundane work, which is why i like it so much at this stage of my life..
gymnastics was an 80 hour week..lifting-being psychologist-it was VERY demanding-psychologically and physically-i LOVED it..
but, alas, no gymnastics teams up here in 'basketball land', so i am in the cooler
with my mp3 player
and ya know? some of the customers are happy to see me back, too..
i make the kids count out thier OWN money for candy [they need math skills bad]
i help parents keep kids from having tantrums when they cant rent a certain movie
i even help the old folks carry out their beer and groceries..
[the other day when the power was out, i ran some batteries down to a chicks house so she could crank up a small heater for her kids to stay warm-the boss let me, too]
such small deeds really seem to make some peoples day, and it is SO easy to just be nice and helpful..
[of course, i can be nasty when THEY are nasty, too..]
so, yes-a market rat isnt really a lofty goal-nowhere near as exciting and rewarding as coaching a gymnastics team to a state championship-but i am still helping people in some way-some days..
[plus-me?
8 hour shift?
mp3 player?
non-stop?
haha!
that's the best part-i get to listen to my tunes all day and night.. yehaw]
and this mundane job
WILL GET ME TO ENGLAND NEXT JUNE, TOO!

I already worte a huge reply yesterday, so I´ll make it short now. I loved reading what you´re actually doing, Diane. I was very impressed by sending my package to the ministry of Tennesee:-))) And Kathi, that´s lovely what you´re doing in your job. Although it may be boring sometimes, you can be very proud of yourself, helping so many people. You´re a great person indeed. Why don´t more people act like you??? I think most of us experienced, that it´s not that hard. So people, don´t be afraid, to show your heard ( this should nearly be a quotation of Brother Of Mine:-). Let´s follow Kathis example and it will make our lives even more happy ( if this is possible for some of us, I mean to make it even more happy:-)
Thinking of it again, I wrote something different yesterday.well these are my thoughts of today.

I am a professional nanny, or as I like to call it, going for my masters in motherhood: I graduate when I have my own kids (whenever the hell that will be). I've been at this since I ditched college waaay back, and have loved nearly every minute of it. Currently, my stint of six and a half years entails the care of 2 10-yr.old twins (these are the guys who want to know everything about music, thanks to School of Rock), a nearly 3 yr.old (who thinks he's 15) and their exactly-a-month-old sister. It's not bad now, with their mom on leave, but come the first of June I'll probably be pulling my hair out.
My last job, also lasting six and a half years, was taking care of two girls in Westchester County, NY. To make me feel old, the oldest is college hunting this weekend. AAAUUGGHH!
On the side, when I'm not going to Yes/Rush/Dream Theater concerts, I like to write romance stories. Whole buncha stuff written but nothing cohesive as of yet, but I'll get there.
And my other job is keeping tabs on my roomies: one's a former teacher's aide who bailed just two weeks ago and got a job that didn't require dealing with a horrific teacher who reduced her to a puddle of tears on a regular basis; the other is an artist who boldly quit her job and works from home making hand-crafted dog pins (wizbangwonders.com, for all you doggie lovers). I don't get paid enough for keeping them in line! :)

Those of you who teach, you have my absolute respect.
Hey, I resemble that remark. I'm a CPA with a masters in tax and have been in the business since 1984 (wow, I just realized - 20 years). Although it can get to be a grind at times, I really enjoy helping people and the opportunity to get involved with challenging projects. I work primarily with closely held companies, their owners and high net worth individuals. I am blessed to be able to work with a great group of people and let me dispel some myths about accountants - some of the biggest partiers I know are CPA's. Now that April 15 is almost over, it will be time to put that to the test,
Accounting has been a great profession for me and has helped me finance my passion for Yes. I originally went into accounting because I am good with numbers and really didn't want to have anything to do with sales. I eventually came to realize that technical skills will only get you so far and that those who do the best are the ones who can generate business (i.e. sales). Go figure.
If I ever gave up accounting, I would probably become a teacher - math or business/finance courses.
Peace,
Jay

I'm a civil servant in the UK. I'm not saying where, as it's had a lot of stick in the British press of late. So those of you in the UK probably know where I work now.

Stop hitting me please, I'm only doing my job!!!!!
I'm a geologist and I work in the Oil & Gas industry.
That category wasn't on the list so I ticked construction and extraction, as my primary objective in my job is to extract as much hydrocarbon out of the ground as I possibly can in the most clean and cost effective way as possible....

I do, in a broad sense of the word, inventory control for the Old Navy distribution center in Hebron, Ky., which is where the Cincinnati Airport is. Right now that's my only job. I actually work in 5 different departments there.
A nice place to work and a good company. They also have distribution centers in Nashville, Fishkill, NY, Las Vegas and Northern California, any one of which I could go work at for a time or permanently someday, if I so choose, as not one of them is fully staffed.

As it says in my profile,I work in the critical care unit of a hospital near my home, about a 7 minute transit. It's been very, very(monumentally)busy here since the 1st of the year.
I'm kind of a gopher-however-I'm chained(figuratively, lol)to a desk, where I'm responsible for cardiac monitoring of our patients, and all of their vital signs.I page physicians(at all hours of the night...),I place orders for their patients into the computer-tests,diets,etc.I also assist with the direct care of our patients, although I am not a nurse-cleaning,positioning-I'm the guy who does compressions during a code blue...although someone must come replace me at this desk when such things happen...someone must always be present, monitoring the vitals.I'm also the guy who yells if something goes awry on those monitors(& when I yell, they listen!)!
In cost-cutting measures around ten years ago, some 6 digit consultant somewhere decided that all these roles could be combined into one position-my official title is US/MT/PCA,which when decoded(lol) means Unit Secretary/Monitor Technician/Patient Care Associate(a nice dressed up term for Nursing Assistant...)...as I said-basically a gopher;if my nurses need it,I go & get it for them,or find someone to bring it.
I have the great pleasure of working with the finest nurses in the facility, the best team-an environment within which I am most comfortable, given my time in the military years ago where teamwork is of the essence.
It's been around 15 years since I first started in critical care, and though my service has gone on not quite continuously since then,it's kind of something that gets into your blood.
Working nights kind of comes naturally to me-I've always been a nocturn...!My family at home is very supportive of me and for me,I get time to see them around dinner every day...my time off is very precious to me,as Im' sure it is for all of you.

I am in effect a tax collector. I work through an outsourced company for the local Government, and I answer peoples queries on council tax (rates etc) and help those who fall behind catch up.
I feel a bit of a judus sometimes...try telling a poor ninety year old veteran that despite the fact he has no real money coming in, he still has to pay these extortionate rates and live of baked beans for the rest of his life....and despite my personal sympathies there is absolutly nothing I can do about it.... it breaks the heart.
Got to find myself a new job that warms the soul.

Allpurechance We live quite close! I went through Nursing School at FMCC. I made it to my fourth semester and dropped out! Had good grades too. It was hard! I went back into constuction and did not finish. I just could not afford to continue school. A Family and two years worth of bills pilling up forced me out. No College programs for someone who is
Middle aged, White, Male, and has work experience. It all came out of my pocket! Went broke trying to improve my education and employability potential. Not bitter at all, just a factual observation.
Worked out well though, Job I have now helps me use some of my creative talents, and it is as close as I can imagine for a job I enjoy.
I have ended up as a "Museum Exhibit Specialist" and that means I do everything from Woodcarving to Model Building and from Design to Cabinet making. Electronic work even Stained Glass and Dark Room work (enlarging to giant size old B&W negatives). Some day's it is interesting!
It's playing Bass and Guitar when I have time that is my passion!

Speech-Language Pathologist specializing in cognitive and apraxia therapy for the brain-injured at a rehab center in the northeast.
I help manage the Mackinnon Centre, a skills unit for adults with physical disabilities of all kinds. The range of people I deal with can have a congenital condition such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida or cystic fibrosis; a progressive illness such as multiple sclerosis or huntington's corea; or an acquired disabity through trauma such as a stroke, tumour or a car crash resulting in brain injuries which affect cognition (aphasia). We cover a wide variety of subjects such as the creative arts, writing, music, recreational sports, gardening, cooking, computer work etc.
Upwards of 70% of the people have acquired their condition and a lot of language work is also required once the pathologists such as yourself have been through their procedures. Many use various forms of communications and we work quite closely with Dundee University's Computer Micro-centre who work towards new forms of communication devices.
Have you ever been to an ISAAC (International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communications) (http://www.isaac-online.org/en/home.shtml) Conference? Last years was held in Natal, Brasil and the one two years ago was held in Odense, Denmark. I met Neil Young at that one as his wife was recieving an award for her work with the Bridge and of course Neil's son has limited speech due to cerebral palsy. Unfortunately due to 911 a lot of the American specialists never came down to Brasil and the conference was a bit sparse but still incredible.
For more information on the Mackinnon Centre click here (http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/mackinnoncentre/skills.htm), although the website is about 5 years out of date. When there if you go to the music page (I ran the music department until getting promoted a few years back) you will hear examples of work from adults effected by brain injury.

we used to love to hate radio consultants when I was on air... the ones we saw would come in, and screw everything up, tell the PD to fire people because they didn't work... and the PD would listen to them, the ratings never got better, and we ended up losing talent for no reason... one time I got the axe... moved up here and was the producer for the number 1 talk radio program in the state. I'm sure you are a great person... it's just my personal experience, and those people at the stations I've worked at, that make me this way. To The God Mars Ocelus
Aelius Augustinus Optio
Paid His Vow...
This altar was found during excavations in Caerwent. It stood by the south wall of a house within the Roman City.
It is very likely that Aelius Augustinus had been an optio in the legion based in Caerleon. He would have erected the altar to 'pay back' a vow granted by the god - maybe for success in battle or recovery from an illness.
Mars was of course a Roman god - but here we have Mars Ocelus a fusion of Roman and British gods. Religion in Roman Britain was a mixture of British deities (usually associated with the powers of nature) and Roman gods such as Mars, Minerva, Jupiter and Venus.
The inscription reads:

God Mars Ocelus
Ael(ius) Agustinus
Op(tio) Paid His Vow
