Hi, Cepheidvoid! Welcome to YesFans!

Unfortunately, I don't have the answer to your question, but you've piqued MY curiosity too!

Surely on a site this large and diverse SOMEONE has the answer?

I believe a 'vachalia' is a lute type stringed instrument. The Portugese guitar Steve Howe uses on "9 Voices" & "Your Move" (to name 2 songs) was referred to as a 'vachalia' many years ago and since then, much confusion has followed.

Steve now calls it a Portuguese 12 string. Even he in an interview said the name was a mistake. His sister bought him the guitar when she went to Spain back in the '60's. He said it is a cheap guitar. But would Your Move sound the same without it?
