If I wanted someone to check out my favorite bass player's best playing, I'd make them listen to these Yes tracks:
HEART OF THE SUNRISE ( any version except YESYEARS)
How does he do this?
SWEET DREAMS......A simple riff but it can crack the walls!
MAGNIFICATION........Chris steals the show on this one
RITUAL.....Love that intro as well as the lead bass solo right
before the percussion segment
I'M RUNNING.......Yes, I dare go to Big Generatorville
LONG DISTANCE / FISH......The YESSONGS version, of course
DOES IT REALLY HAPPEN........My favorite DRAMA track has some
great Fish moments...
ON THE SILENT WINGS OF FREEDOM.......Obvious really....
LUCKY SEVEN.....Okay, it's not from Yes, but it's Chris. His lead
bass on this one blows me away.
And yours????

GATES OF DELIRIUM !! Especially the battle part.
I saw it live and I could not believe my eyes.
On Yours is No Disgrace Squire's melodic style is at its best, especially the version on the Yes Album.
I remember he said in a interview once, that he likes his playing on The Rembering very much.

I mean The Remembering (Tales) of course
"Silent Wings of Freedom!"
"Tempus Fugit!"
"Heart of the Sunrise!"
"I'm Running!"
and I love his long-stretch arpeggios in "New State of Mind"

I agree with most of the previous selections and I will probably get "slamed" for saying this but I think Chris is great on "The Messenger". (IMO)
I'm missing something here, Yes Oz. What would make you think you would get slammed on something like that? I know this site has not been the friendliest lately but to say something good about Chris Squire? I don't think anyone would give you a hard time about that. Chris rules.
I thought Yes trying a tune with a reggae feel was a great move - probably not the stuff of classic Yes but the song had a great groove - Squire and White were really on their game - and a terrific hook

1) "Sound Chaser" - you think he and White rehearsed this a few times?
2) "On The Silent Wings of Freedom" - if you think the Tormato version is smoking, you should hear a live boot of this.
3) "Parallels" - concise but melodically effective.
4) "Wurm" LIVE - Particularly the closing section, where the dude is absolutely shredding.
5) "Ritual" LIVE - Yesshows or Masterworks, take your pick, overwhelming thunder from Sir Christopher.

I would vote for Masterwork's Ritual of course. Is there any doubt in anyone's mind?????

You surely would not get an argument out of me on that one Jan!

Yessiree I didn't think I would get slamed for saying something good about Chris. I get the impresion that there is quite a few on the site who don't rate The Ladder very high and the fact that I probably picked a "commericially sounding" number (for want of a better word) I thought that would draw the flack. I personnal like the The Ladder. Sure not "classic" but I believe there is good and bad in most Yes albums (obviously alot more good).
Oh, I see.
Well, regardless of whether or not we might like a particular song, I think we are all in agreement of the musical mastery of our Chris.
Your on firm footing on that one Yes Oz.

I've witnessed 3 live SILENT WINGS, and have heard two boot versions. So far every version I've heard S M O K E S !!!
I think they should have put the MADRIGAL into SILENT WINGS medley on YESSHOWS. They could have dropped WHALE, GFTO and the warming up jam right before RITUAL. They didn't let ME compile that album. It should have been a tripple like YESSONGS.
Then there'd have been room for even AWAKEN and SOUND CHASER.
Complain, complain, complain.......
Oh yeah, and I LOVE THE LADDER.

I'm strugging here to pick a favorite Squire moment and I can't come up with anything. The guy is simply one of the best bass players I've ever heard. In just about every song he stands out. OK,this one just popped into my head,CTTE during the second movement where he becomes even more prominent, right before I Get Up.Is it my favorite? Heck, one of many and hopefully one of more to come. I know it's not a Yes alblum but his bass line on Hold Out Your Hand always gives me a smile. And his work with White on Wakeman's Criminal Record, all of side 1,superb.

Hmmm, so many good moments, I think Gates if I had to pick one would probably come out tops . . . but it would take me a long time to pick it!
