I saw this jazz band last night at a small little club in austin and i met all three members. I was talking to there drummer and he told me that he met Bill Bruford 5 times and each one of those times he was an arrogent asshole. Has anyone else heard this about bill or felt this way about him?

First off, if he met him all those times and Bill was an a$$hole why in the hell would he go back for more.
I introduced myself to Bill in 1987, he was nice but was also on his way to dinner so the conversation was short.

I think he's a quiet person, but also says what he thinks. That can irritate people.

A friend of mine named Chris had the good fortune to meet and talk with Bill Bruford after a show one time; I don't recall who the band was he went to see.
But Chris said that Bruford was very personable and just as funny as he comes across in interviews and videos. It was a small club, and Chris just walked up to him after they finished playing and starting chatting him up, and Bill took the time to talk with him. It may have helped that Chris is English; I don't know, maybe the accent put him at ease or something. Bruford is not exactly known for his tact. He tells it like it is, but I always thought he did a good job couching it in humor. I suppose if his style rubs you the wrong way, he could just come across as arrogant, but Chris said he was really cool.

Funny thing I have heard this from several of my friends and it suprises me very much but maybe he came off that way.

I have a friend who is a drummer, Bill is his hero and he has met him several times. He says Bill has been very friendly and willing to chat each time.
Since these people you heard this from were jazz musicians, maybe jealousy or resentment is a factor? You know - "people come to see him just because he was in a famous rock band", that sort of thing.

I could meet Bruford when he came to Chile with Earthworks in 2002, and he was also very friendly, signing everything (he even signed an ABWH CD lol, anyway nobody did dare to ask him to sign UNION, lol) and posing for pics, and answering questions, he even took time to answer when someone said "hey Bill, what is a Khatru???" lol
over all, a great moment with an EXCELLENT musician, one of the best in the word for sure.

Modspeak:
The Close Edge could you please change the title of your thread from A$$hole to something less desparaging? It's not considered YESfriendly to desparage the band members or former bandmembers even if it's in reference to what someone else said.
Thank you

Huh ?
I didn't pick up anything more than what the question asked. Anyway, I was answering by saying I met Bill briefly (on his birthday) in Hollyweird when 'Earthworks' played. He is 'very' English and that can offend some Americans. Too pompous, too arrogant, too famous ?????
He was quite friendly and has a quick wit.

People tend to think celebrities owe them their time. When they don't get it, they call the celebrity arrogant to all their friends. It happens all the time. It's stupid.

I e-mailed Bill a couple of years ago thanking him for all the wonderful sounds, rhythms, and performances he has delivered over the years - especially the two Moraz/Bruford performances I was able to witness. He graciously responded (via his webmaster) thanking me for taking the time.
So, maybe some people have caught Bill on bad day - big deal, get a life. Are you all sunshine and sweetness 24/7?

Hey Antioch, and good to see you. I wasn't meaning you I meant the "A" word at the top of the thread. We're not suppose to use adjectives like that in reference to the band members (even though someone called them that). Not meant to anything you said.
~~Peace~~
Carry on

I don't know about that specific incident your friend had (maybe he was having a bad day) but Bruford obviously has a very strong personality and, as it has been said before, he can be very blunt and a bit arrogant seeming. Whether he is truly an "asshole" or is just outspoken is up for interpretation. I tend towards the latter, I think his humor is great.
