Does/has anyone else noticed that Bill Bruford is playing milk bottles (filled with various levels of water) during the band united jam on Roundabout?
I spoke to Tim Morse (author of Yes In Their Own Words) and he confirmed this.
As big a Yes fan as I am, this whole subject was brought to my attention by a friend of mine. He had heard it in an interview somewhere. There is no mention of this in any book that I have read on Yes. Also I never did hear the interview. I thought I had heard every Yes radio interview that was ever played in my city.

Very observant there rawhtreelimbs!
I figure that's what we hear during some of the vocal harmonies towards the end of Roundabout: It sounds like glass bottles, but in tune with the main melody... Way in the background there. Nice touch.
P.S. What does 'rawhtreelimbs' mean? Sorry, just piqued my curiosity!

rahtreelimbs are my initials and then tree & limbs. Since I am a treeclimber ( as a side business ) this seemed appropriate. Also a drummer with a great love of anything that Bill Bruford has done.

Apparently this kind of thing used to be common practice among drummers and percussion players. I read a Hal Blaine interview where he said on some Smile sessions stuff he's playing on orange juice containers and I've also read a Bo Diddley interview where he said drummers at Chess records sessions often used phone books or played their parts on cardboard boxes to beef up their drum sound.

I thought it was beer bottles, but there are indeed bottles being played in that percussion section ("Along the drifting clouds...") of Roundabout... a distinctive, glassy "tink tink" sound throughout there...
