View Full Version : What would you like Roger Dean to build for you?

Roger Dean is keen to have one of his many architectural designs built. If you had the opportunity to have Roger have one of his designs built for you, what would it be?

A really nice paperweight.
And a summer-house in Moab Utah.

Unoriginal I know, but I always loved Roger's house that he exhibited in the 1970s. It was kind of hobbit-like and all rounded. Could do with that type of thing, more than anythnig else at the moment.

There are some great answers there.
I would love Roger to design and build a holiday home perched on one of his floating rocks on a clifftop above the ocean.
This question is actually based upon a real dream that Roger has - so if any of you seriously want to build something substantial (am not sure that a tree house would count!) then he might be interested....

A bit Close To The Edge you mean Brian?
BrianD

Absolutely - with one of those floating stone staircases over the ocean to reach it! You would just have to be careful where you put your feet after returning home with a few too many on board. Puttng out the garbage might be a challenge as well.

I've promoted Roger's work at a snowboard co. where I know a few people. They love his work but I'm sure that the $$$ for designing a top / bottom sheet for a board would be too high.

Hobbit houses. yeah, I love those. I could definitely go for one of those, but to keep me happy, I'd love one of his doors. The ones I've seen have a very art noveau feel to it. That, and I remember seeing a window done in a Y pattern, so it'd be natural to have one of those, seeing as it's my initial, and it also stands for Yes (duh).

Jasper...
I just talked with Roger a few hours ago...
I brought my TALES LP to the San Fran Exhibit.
There was a sign on the wall that said, 'NO AUTOGRAPHS!'
So I sadly shuffled TALES back under my arm, and thrilled to the original painting of RELAYER (A lot of 'pencil' work in it! The horses and riders... Dean spent some time on those! All in sharp pencil contrast to the salmon wash he used in other areas of the painting... Wonder IS! Just amazing to stand there falling into RELAYER. I live in that world!).
Red Dragon: The original is so detailed, again... it's a huge painting, around 5' by 7. More a 'mural' than you'd imagine...
Which leads me to the cover of ABWH... It is a HUGE painting! I stood there dwarfed by the thing... The feathered blue tower with stylized peace signs in every nook... The eagle coming down as an image of the artist himself. Taking hold of this expression in the talons which render life as well as lifting something from the ground, only to drop it from on high.
Roger was candid and amicable. And I was at home in that roomful of YESHEADS!
You would have loved it Jasper! I thought of you.
As I walked out, Dean recognised me from Hawaii, and asked me, "Would you like me to sign your TALES Record?' And he did.
What a guy! Roger Dean, the true 6th member of YES.

Hi Earl!
Glad to hear you had a great time there. Roger is indeed so kind. I send him a painting of me some weeks ago, but was truely embarassed to hear that Roger opened the package with shattered glass! The painting had a few scratches on it, but he thanked me anyway!!
The relayer image is indeed very special. Not only to the people who look at it, but also when you should try to create such thing of your own...
Red Dragon is indeed a strange picture.. Lovely (of course) but why have such a Red Dragon on a green background!??
And then: Blue Desert. Or as we should say, the ABWH cover. I've never seen that painting in reel, but I would like to know one day if the giant blue birdcage is all painted on the canvas, or a seperate drawn thing stuck on top of it. Indeed, huge it is! I tried once to start my own copy, at the same size.. When I learned how big it was I smiled and put my brushes aside! Haha..
Are you getting back one of these days? If so, please say hello to Roger from me, and ask him about that package with shattered glass...
Love,
Jasper.

Actually when you think of it....
I would have this request to build us a place... Call it a hotel, call it a house, name it whatever you like.. but I'm dreaming of this place where we all can be at the same time, just like your doig your things on this site now...
I've mentioned this before, and I have to admit that I'm pretty addicted to this concept... You know, someone could do the garden, another one light the fireplace, some others could have their Jam sessions.... Tardis and me could have our own basement where we can store our Antique radios! Haha...
Some place that would be huh?
But what name should it have?.... Hmmmm...
Love to you all...
Jasper.

Ah Jasper...
We've mulled over this before. I usually call it our 'Yesfans Commune'.
Brian D named it 'Yestopia'...
We're just waiting for some benevolent person with lots of cash to buy us a Greek Island. Then we'll let Roger 'have at it'.
...I can imagine honeycombed living modules looking out on a turquoise magnesium-high sea, a bit like tardis's 'Hobbit Hole' idea, but done-up like collective artist's lofts, so we can all have our own living spaces, yet share the greater space communally.
I can imagine a great ampitheatre for gatherings and concerts (guess who the house band will be? Haha! Have to talk with Yesmanagement about that one. "If you live here Jon, you'll get everything tax-free!").
The ampitheatre could be shaped like a great Conch Shell.
The greatest thing would be Roger Dean re-creating all of the images from 'Yessongs' on our island.
The great fist-like rock with the girl sitting on top gazing, as mountains fall out of the sky and stand there (We'll have to invent gravity-repellent, for the suspension of falling mountains, floating rocks, etc. No biggie!).
Yestopia.
I like it.
I'm moving there next week. Why wait? Tomorrow!
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh, bye the way...
The 'Bird Cage' on the ABWH album is actually part of the painting.
The painting itself is more a mural.
It's HUGE.
Perhaps 7 1/2' by 5 1/2 feet... The detail is stunning, and while it's one of Roger's 'busier' paintings (not so 'zen'), it works really well when you are standing in front of it, falling into that window on another world...
There are at least a million-squared stories in that painting. Stunning.
Absolutely stunning.
All the best to you Mi Compadre!
Hey there AA!
You can design the mandala for the Ampitheatre ceiling (Michealangelo!), as well as the crop circles which will embellish our fields of gold...
Roger actually has said that he's looking to design a community. He's spoken of Australia as a possible place to build... So everything above may not be so far-fetched!
I'm ready to pack and move-in tomorrow!
.
Small hearted people like to live in boxes.
They actually enjoy sharp angles...
I imagine that the world would divide into two groups: Those who like their living habitat to mirror the free-flowing natural order...
And those who enjoy sharp city angles, cramped parameters, and concrete quadrangles.
~~~~~~
*sigh* So it goes. But there is a kernel of 'The Great God Pan' dwelling in every heart, deeply and hidden at times, but there... We are born of the earth, not the fabricated.
I imagine many woold resist at first glance, but would eventually find their Hobbit-Loft in Yestopia!
It's funny... Things are like that anyway, just not quite as obvious.
There are those who love the earth, and those who wish to tame the untameable... It's up to us to be the magic...
We are Yestopia.
With every breath, in our smallest acts of kindness, we ever ascend and create the true world... Life as living architecture.
I Love It!

It just added to the tackiness that they had 'The Last Supper' rendered in meltable expendable materials... If it had been done tactfully and believably... It wasn't. Oh well.
