View Full Version : I'm concerned about Steve's health...

Kindly forgive me if this is an issue already well covered, but I haven't been able to find any threads here regarding Steve's current health situation.
Unless I'm missing something (always a possibility), current pictures of Steve - publicity shots from the acoustic project, for example - show a Steve that's grown notably emaciated. Does anyone have reliable knowledge of what, if anything, is going on here?
Thank you in advance for any and all help on this.
He is a vegetarian for one. I saw him once with a gray tshirt on, I couldn't tell the difference from his skin color. He looked that bad.
He is dwindling in weight I can see that for myself.

He's always been thin, and has looked relatively the same as he does now since the late 90s. According to nearly all reviews from recent gigs, he's been quite energetic on stage. I'm sure he's doing just fine health-wise.

Don't worry about him. Take a look at the cover of The Yes Album and you won't see any fat lead guitarists.
After seeing him perform at Powderham, I'd have been looking for a lie down long before the end of the concert.

folks.......feel free to respond to this thread but i think it is one of those old ghosts that just somehow resurfaced. orson's join date was 9/03 and it's his only post. not sure about this but looks kind of weird.

Wait a minute, now. What exactly "looks kind of wierd" about my post? I understand Steve has always been thin - and I thank all other posts above for your courteous replies - but he seems noticeably thinner to me of late. Him sitting on the O'Brien show while all others stood also got me to thinking.
Look, I'm not trying to start a rumor here. I'm encouraged by the responses here that Steve is by all accounts fine. You all know more about all this than do I, I trust, so I'll gladly defer to your assessments of the situation. But I see no cause to impugn my sincerety here.
As for this being my first post, I stand guilty as charged. I am, however, a long-time if infrequent visitor. There's always a first time for everything, and concern for Steve's health was what prompted my maiden voyage. No conspiracy...and no "old ghosts," whatever the hell that alludes to. Take 'er easy there, Mood.

McCartney is a vegetarian too and he also has a certain gaunt look about him that doesn't look as healthy as he should. Maybe some vitamin, mineral, enzyme missing in the diet???

I'm a vegetarian and I'm the picture of health - I could even do with losing a few pounds. But there again I don't go on 4/5 month strenuous tours around the world.

Yeah, it may be a lot of reasons including lifestyle, exercise, genetics, etc. - wasn't trying to point to veggie, other than in any type of diet it's possible to lack in having good amounts of certain things.

Hi Orson
I think that mood was only guessing that maybe a post you made when you first joined had somewhow got bumped to the surface again. It can happen. I'm sure no offence was meant.
Other folks have raised the same concerns you have, so don't be put off. I just think that maybe us skinny guys don't wear as well.

Whoah, hold on! Was Yes on the Conan O'Brian show? When?? :)
From what I can see, Steve's fine. I'm clinically under-weight myself, and us folks only need to worry if we get a bad fever or worse, so Steve's just gotta be careful.

I sincerely hope that Steve Howe doesn't get the opportunity to read any of these posts. It would seem to me that anybody who is a member of this group considers themself to be a fan of the band and of its members. It therefore puzzles me that the same folk could be so insensitive as to write about the health and 'emaciated' appearance of one of the band's members. Perhaps it did not occur to the writer that Steve himself may occasionally read these threads himself.
I personally stood next to Steve at the recent concert in Glasgow, and can say in all honesty that he looks so much healthier 'in the flesh' than he does in photos. In fact, I was quite surprised myself at how well he looked.
So please, can we keep these negative thoughts to ourselves, as I'm sure that no matter how well meaning or well intended they may be, I am in no doubt that they could cause some anxiety and even unnecessary worry if read by the person concerned.

sorry orson. no offense was meant. inveryes had my intent correct. for some reason old posts (usually polls) can resurface with it indicated that the poster just posted it five minutes ago when it was a year ago. that is the ghost i was referring too. and your wording is very similar to a similar post back before this tour started and all the GOOD steve news came in.
my original addition to this thread was going to be.......steve may look a little thin and balding but he's still kickin' major ass on stage.....kickin' harder than the masterworks tour for sure......
then i started thinking this was an old thread.......see what happens when i think.........don't be a stranger orson. peace

It wasn't Conan O'Brian. It was the other competing late show on CBS after Letterman.

Time to put this one to bed, to be sure. But first let me acknowledge Mood's explanation by saying I now appreciate what you were getting at, and take no offence whatsoever, since none was intended.
To the matter of my inquiring about all of this, and the possibility that Steve himself might glance herein someday and be hurt by my observations, I can only apologize in advance to an artist I much admire for unwittingly doing him even the slightest of harm. "Emaciated" was an egregious choice of words on my part; I apologize to all for the use of that unnecessarily charged term. But I would also hope (and wager) that a swell bloke like Steve would appreciate the essence of my question - concern about his welfare - and not focus too closely on an ill-chosen adjective.
One more thing: Sorry...perthaps it was the CBS late nighter I should have alluded to, not Conan. I was referring, of course, to the boys' acoustic rendition of "Roundabout" that they were doing in support of the latest album. Why was Steve sitting during that performance? Anyone know? I didn't catch the 35th tour - did he do some sitting during that as a matter of course?

If I were Steve I wouldn't be offended. I would probably even think it's so nice of you to worry about my health
I know Steve was sitting for the song(s) that he played Dobro. That kind of guitar you play with a slide while it sits in your lap. The guitar mic was in position for this guitar, so I guessed he had to have his other acoustic(s) lined up for this mic.

That's the thing I noticed and that it started four hours ago???? It's a repeat conversation that I think SWIB started several months ago just after the tour started here in the states.

Steve's fine. You can tell that because he's playing so great, better than he has since the very early years. That tells me he's feeling great as well.

Maybe it's a combination of the veggie diet and the 60 years of age factor. I too noticed several years ago that MCartney was looking pretty wasted. In Macca's case a nip and a tuck seemed to sort that out.

All I know is that when I was watching my Yes Symphonic Dvd and my wife came into the room she referred to Steve as a Zombie! LOL. Mind you my Mum always referred to me and my two brothers as 'a bunch of zombies' when we were young and we were sitting in front of the tv for hours on end! I had this friend back in England who was a vegetarian and he was very thin as well. I think some vegetarians are very thin as a result of the diet they are on. But then Steve has looked thin for quite a while so as with others on this thread I think there is little to wonder about.
Cheers
