Although not a bad version, I always wondered whose bright idea it was to cut it in half and put it on opposite sides of the record. I mean, they left 'Gates' intact on one side, why not Ritual?
I think it's because this version of Ritual clocks in at over 28 minutes, which is more than can fit on a normal LP side. It's not split on the remastered CD version anymore.

I not agree: many LP have a running time of about 30 mins each side (see ABWH and Union)
Choice of Atlantic Records?

Depends on how wide the grooves are .. :)) - Ritual has some really fat sounds and needs lots of wide grooves on a 1980 technology vinyl LP. They simply couldn't physically fit it all on one side, so they split it.
LP's made later in the 1980's such as ABWH were made using more modern technology and they were able to cut the grooves thinner to fit more on the LP without compromising on the sound. Up to 30 minutes per side.
Hope this answers your question.

Side two of "Selling England by the Pound" in 1973 was 28 minutes long.

I have the remastered Yesshows CD...
On the back of the case it says that Ritual is one track, but when you play it it's two tracks...when you try to skip to the next song, it takes you to the second half of Ritual. Weird...
Oh well, Ritual rocks anyway. I like it better than the version on Tales...

Genesis did do very long sides for 70s lps, but it was at the expense of the sound quality.

jon's barking during the drum parts are hilarious: i was listening to this on a two hour drive back home from buying the album. i thought it dragged A LITTLE, this version but it was amazing. my favorite version of this is from the symphonic tour dvd, partially because it's fun to see the band become percusionist.

I think that's actually Patrick doing most of the barking.

Back in the days of vinyl, it was difficult - not impossible - but difficult to get a 28 minute track on one side of the album.
Todd Rundgren's "Initiation" bears a disclaimer warning to be careful since the grooves are VERY close together!

I think that barking, whoever it might be, must be the creepeist and scary part of Yes Music.
Its just very scary

Ill never forget..many many years ago. I was playing Yesshows in my little teenage room, and my Mom hearing that middle section..with the demonic voice ranting on and on during Ritual..asking me.."Im not sure I like you listening to this band.."
And me having to defend..."but wait..there's a resolution to this madness...stay tuned!!"

Thats true in the 70s kaytel=bad spell would put as much songs on a lp as posible but sounded like crap cause back then the more you put on a side of a lp the more distorted the sound would be but as brismike says later the technology got better so was able to add more with out losing the good sound! :rightG:

I have the Yesshows album on cassette from years ago and all of Ritual is on the B side of the tape but the song still fades out and then fades back in just like it does if you had to flip the album. I always figured that it was just laziness on the part of the record company.
