I know there is one poll like this in the Yesfans Rating area, but let's have it here once again. So what's your fave song on Keystudio?

Mind Drive really is good. I agree that it's the best modern Yes progressive work, or at least the best since Endless Dream ...

Honestly, why did YES release this album?
There is nothing new in it since ALL these tracks have been included in both "Keys" albums...why keep squeezing money out of us fans? And as I mentioned in regards to the lawsuit filed by Tony Kaye on a seperate thread, it's the greedy record companies and account executives that are behind these "re-issue" deals. Of course, they had to add "something" like that new intro to Children of the Light but that alone does not justify this release. Even the artwork does not make this a worthwhile album, anyone with a CD burner and who owns the two Keys albums can create their own without shelling out $16. The tracks are great, anything there is better to OYE that should qualify as the worst Yes album but that's a different subject open for debate.

I finally picked up KEYSTUDIO, despite my already having the two KEYS TO ASCENSION sets. For convenience, it's nice to have this as it should have been issued to begin with. Perhaps my ears are playing tricks on me & my memory, but it seems like some of the tracks have undergone considerable remixing. I'll have to do some side by side comparisons...It seems that Rick's keys are more audible on KEYSTUDIO.

As good as it is to have the 'Lightning' section of CHILDREN OF LIGHT restored, I still prefer the nearly a cappella opening of CHILDREN OF LIGHT on KEYS TO ASCENSION 2.

This album was not the record company's doing, but Steve Howe. Steve was involved in the original post production of both Keys sets. And he had heard from fans a great deal of how the studio tracks should've all been packaged together on a single cd set. So, Steve was just doing something for the fans with this compilation. I think all the tracks sounds great this way. The running order is very cohesive. As far as shelling out $16 for this, I can't complain. I bought my copy for $13.99 @ a K-Mart in Wyoming while doing some gigs out there. And Kmart's one of those stores in Florida that don't supply any Yes albums.

Oh yeah, my favorite song on this set is Mind Drive. As with everyone else, I feel it's their most progressive piece in ages. It's a shame that no one in the band, except for Steve, wants to perform this song on any of the recent tours. It seems like Steve's been the only one who believes in this song and its potentials in a live setting.

I totally agree, mind drive is their most progressive piece probably since the Tormato recordings. I too can't understand for what valid reason the other members of the band aside Steve of course, would not want to include this gem on their set list. Maybe the only chance we have of ever hearing this song live would be on a Steve Howe solo tour but then, it would no longer be Yes. I'm pretty sure that Steve was responsible for ressurecting old gems like Gates of Delirium and Ritual in a live setting. But who would have imagined that South side of the sky would be performed live in 2002 after so many years?...
just wishful thinking.

I like "That That Is" I fell in love with it right from the first listen. Its really a good marrige of what Yes was trying to do on "Union" and "Talk," bring current issues into Yes lyrics with a more classic sound, (the slow "These days are just a...." section really reminds me of "I Get Up, I Get Down.")

"Children of Light" was better without the tacked on intro. Its great having Rick back, especially when he uses mini-moog, but some of his new keyboard sounds I could really do without. I think Rick would do good to start using more vintage keyboard rigs. This Korg/ Casio thing isn't happening for me.

Keys is a great album in the mold of earlier Yes epic albums. I love tha tthe sound is updated in certain ways, it shows the bankd wanting to grow and not just rest on their past achievements. There is also a nice mix of moods on the record going from the dreamy and spiritual Children of Light" to quintessential Yes of Mind Drive, the rocker of Be the One. I vote for Children of Light.

Pretty easily I voted for 'That, That Is" I love the "all in all" section! This has some of the best melodic lines in the past 20 or so years by the band! I love this song! I just listed to "Mind Drive" again about 2 weeks ago. I must say, the first 7 minutes are very very good, but after that it gets a little too repetitious for me. I think this song needed to be edited more than any song on Tales (IMO) except maybe The Remembering. If you have not listened to That, That Is recently, take a listen! It's great!

I have recently copied the new material from Keys 1+2 to make a copy of Keystudio.I have kept the track order of Keystudio & whooo! it's like having a new 70's classic Yesalbum.Perhaps I didn't appreciate the new material when it was surrounded with the YESCLASSICS on Keys1+2 OR I didn't listen to thE new material enough.Mind Drive is magnificent & the other tracks such as Footprints and That, That This hold up well.Has anyonelse given this a try or simply bought the rediscovered Keysstudio.

What happened with the Tony Kaye lawsuit, anyway. He obviously didn't stop the boxset from getting released, but did he win or lose?

I voted for Mind Drive, but other than Jon singing about "cracktime," I like all the Keys studio/Keystudio stuff.

It was a tough choice between "Mind Drive" and "Children of the Light," but the live performance tilted me a bit over the edge to "Mind Drive."

The whole set is just smashing!

I hadn't liked anything since "Tormato," but this stuff is interesting.

And FWIW, I did NOT buy the live "Keys," so I was very glad to have had "Keysstudios."

Thank you Mr. Howe!

I haven't heard Union, Talk or The Ladder yet, but as of now, Keystudio is by far, the best album since GFT1.

Good choice! those are the 2 that stand out the most to me, but mind drive kicks way more ass. I LOVE the last 3 minutes of it. Especially when everything drops out and the guitar goes jank jank jank and then it shifts into a diferent time signiture. Sooo cool. I just wish there was like another 5 minutes of jamming at the end. it seams like the song ends right as they're really getting into the groove.

Whatever happened with the Tony Kaye lawsuit? The boxset got released, so he obviously didn't win that part of it, but did he get any money out of it? Did he reach a settlement of some kind? Anyone know?

2) Alan White's HOTS

It is not an album I have listened to that much.

Not to self listen to Key Studio over Christmas... you have only 3 days work in 16!!!

Good choice!

For me, it'll probably be the usual: "Run with the Fox" from the first box set, "3 Ships," "Animation" (title song about birth of a child, of course), "Song of Seven" and "Olias" (I tried it on Xmas before, it worked).

I TOTALLY agree that the "tacked on" intro to "Children of Light" is completely out of place. It's a beautiful Jon song, and Steve's steel solo at the end is simply one of the most gorgeous moments in the entire Yes catalog.

I wish they'd play it as their last pre-encore song live.

This is the first fan site I ever joined and I'm no expert on this band but I was wonderin' if everyone was already aware that 'MIND DRIVE' is a track that was started in 1979 and shelved until the KEYS sessions?

I really wish had released the studio keys tracks as a seperate album to begin with. They would have been recognised for their own merit. I think foot prints, be the one, mind drive and that that is are all total Yes classics. I probably sound like a broken record on this point but i wish they'd play them live!

XYZ (Squire/White/Jimmy Page) did a version of that during their jam sessions in the early 80s... many of us have that track on bootlegs...

ok, you know that pattern that appears in the music on 'that, that is'

that sounds like either harp or maybe steve howe playing it...it's a 15-note (or chord) semi-repetitive pattern...

It kind of reminds me of the ending section of the firebird suite...and that....that is....a.....14 note pattern.

i kinda wondered if they are related somehow...that this song was consciously composed to be similar, or whether it was subconscious, or no relation whatsoever except to the occaisional listener.

This,in the main, was an awesome album and a great return to form for the Classic line-up.
There wasn't much I liked after Tormato,so this was a breath of fresh air and one I still play on a regular basis.
Even That,That Is which lyrically is a bit of a mess, has kinda grown on me down the years.

Best song...undoubtedly,MIND DRIVE.

Bring Me To The Power is the best instrumentally (great buoyant bass), with the expanded XYZ track Mind Drive a close second. That, That Is has grown on me and become my third favourite from Keystudio. It is their best classic sounding album hands down since GFTO.
