What's your fave song on 90125? Wonder how many votes OOALH will get...

Flo

Although 90125 is far from being my Yes favourite album, I think all songs are very good on it ; there is no weak moment really. If I had to pick up 2 or 3 songs, I would choose Hearts, It can happen, Our song. And of course Owner of a lonely heart is a great song although I don't think it will stand the test of time as other real classic yes songs.

Flo, I must agree with you. "90125" is an under-rated album with several good compositions on it. It's funny that "Owner" is the only #1 song Yes has ever had, yet die-hard fans generally dismiss the song. Maybe we want to keep Yes as our little secret!

Hearts.I was so pleased to hear them do this song during The Ladder tour.I wish it was included in the HOB dvd.Great song and Rabin's power chords in the middle is just enough to shock you out of the basic melody to give it a unique twist.

I've always preferred "Cinema" off 90125. That is one of the tightest, most aggressive instrumentals the band has ever pulled off. Squire's bass has a very intriguing, ambient sound to it, and White is just assualting the skins like there's no tomorrow.
I read somewhere, whether it was Yesfans.com or the Close to the Edge book, that the original version of "Cinema" was over 10 minutes in length. That must have been absolutely exhausting for the band.

Changes is my favorite, but what impresses me about this album is its consistency. There really aren't many weak moments at all. It's pop rock done with class. Leave It is vocally interesting to me. I still hear almost all of the songs on this album on the radio sometimes, which is one impressive accomplishment

Regarding "Cinema", which was also a surprise treat on the Ladder Tour, thanks to Billy. I also read somewhere that the original version was much longer than the one that got on the album. Something like 20 minutes actually, and it had a different name too. It was called "Time".

Rabin thought it didn't fit with the rest of the album so cut it down to just the 2 min version that we all know. This is also the only song that Yes have ever received a Grammy for!!

Now wouldn't this 20 min version be a Gem to put on the proposed Rhino Box Set!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you monitering this Fan Forum RHINO !

Cinema is the only Yes track I've heard that could be lifted and put straight on to a Genesis album. Trick of the Tail maybe?

InverYes -

I absoltely agree!! There are indeed shades of "Los Endos" in Cinema. I think Trick of the Tail is the best Collins-era Genesis album.

I bought Trick of the Tail without realizing that Gabriel was not on it.At first I was disappointed, but when I dropped the needle onto the first track I was hooked. It is the best effort with Collins at the fore.I was hopeful that this sound would continue but when Hackett left I knew it would never be the same.

HEARTS is my favorite overall, but IT CAN HAPPEN and CHANGES aren't "far from far behind". As one who loves the YES of the 1970's, I can say that I was glad that ANYTHING got my YES back on tour. This album rocks, although a bit differently than we thought Yes would ever rock. I consider it the best of the Rabin era YES albums. I admit though, that I almost always skip the BIG HIT at the beginning.

OOALH was the one that hooked me into Yes. I like the song and just had to hear more about them. So, i picked up a copy and fell in love with their music and i've been here ever since. I went back and picked up everything they made and found out a super group of men who rocks!!!!!!
I like hearts too, but it was OOALH that hooked me into YES forever!

My vote was for Hearts, which I think is just an absolutely beautiful piece of Yes music, and also the fact that it sounds as if the band is playing it "live".

However, the whole album is very strong, and very much of it's time.

Hearts is one of the best songs Yes ever did.

I wonder how it would sound to hear YES play HEARTS straight into AWAKEN ? Somehow I can imagine HEARTS as a prequel to AWAKEN. The end of HEARTS sounds like it should go on longer. Imagine putting AWAKEN there. Tell me if I'm crazy.

If you're in the mood to just crank up the stereo....it's great....It's the perfect album if you're, say, cleaning the house and need some energy.....It's also the type of album that sounds best if you haven't played it in at least 6 months.....

If you listen to 90125 too much, you start to notice the overproduction of the album, which works to its advantage because it sounds crisp, but it also robs it of some of its energy....I don't know if I'm explaining myself very well, but I think the best way to describe it is if you listen to it a lot it starts to sound like Journey or Styx or Invisible Touch-period Genesis.....

I also start to notice the lack of strong keyboard playing if I play it too much, and I start thinking about what a complete wastoid Tony Kaye is (if they only had picked up a good keyboardist, maybe coaxed Patrick Moraz or somebody who could play a little bit, this version of Yes would have been quite a bit better, IMHO)

But if I'm not thinking much.....it's great.....truly one of their best albums.....I would rate it as their fifth best album, after Close to the Edge, Going for the One, Magnification and Fragile......

To me, It Can Happen is a nice mesh between the power chord-style on the album and it still grooves and also has a lot of nice playing on it.....Plus it's very catchy......

From Owner through Leave It, the album is near letter perfect......City of Love and Our Song are a bit draggy, but Hearts is a nice closer.....

Voted for Hearts and Changes is a close second. I do agree very much that among a lot of fellow Yes fans this is a very underated album, and if you have listened to it several times and just can't get into it that is fine by me, but it seems to me that most of the fans who bash this album, didn't even give it a fair chance and that is just narrow minded......

I like the album as a whole, in cluding Oqner which I thought was a fantastic single. Compare it to Invisable touch !
If I had to choose a fav' I'd go with Hearts.
I always thought this record had the best drumming in this style I had heard. Allan did just a fabulous job. Everything he played fitted perfectly with the music.
Great job Allan White, you're a legend :D.
Kudos to all involved.

Hold On is a fabulous track.
I got it today and I like all the tracks (although I think Our Song drags a little). A good sign for someone who used to dislike Rabin for no reason. I'm beginning to like his solos more than Steve Howe's...

Hold On is probably my least favourite song on 90125. I like the music, but the lyrics don't do much for me. I'd take Our Song over Hold On anyday...weird, huh?

Yeah, that is weird...
...considering that I think the lyrics of Our Song are mostly crap (something I also failed to mention before). Where did Jon's Toledo fixation come from?
As much as I like most of Jon's stuff, every time I listen to Our Song, at about the end of the lyrics I just wish he would shut up so the rest of the band could get on with the song. Chris is the only one who's changing anything musically at this point, if I remember correctly, and that's just by raising his bass notes a little every once in a while.

I just don't know quite what was going on in Jon's mind about Our Song (or City of Love for that matter. That song is almost a parody of itself. I mean, it would be pretty good if Trevor sang and if it ended a minute before it did, but instead they just kept playing. I think it's a joke... I hope it's a joke.).

Jon does good performances on this album -- when everyone involved realizes that he's not Trevor and vice versa. He and Trevor can play off of each other pretty well (it seems as though they might do this on Talk, which I haven't heard so I couldn't tell you :( ) when they set their minds to it, on Changes or Hearts especially. (Incidentally the section in Hearts about "wise men" is strangely reminiscent of Carry On Wayward Son, but I like it anyway. :))

90125 is a very good album, though. I do want to point that out.

Yeah, I dunno, I like the keyboards & guitar & bass & Jon's voice...The song is so bouncy and sunny. I like City of Love, but I suspect Trevor's original version was probably better. Trevor should have sang it solo. Jon trying to sound tough just didn;t cut it! The original story behind the song sounded interesting.

I just listened to this CD last night.

Leave It just makes me feel like I'm having a small party inside of me. I gotta turn the stereo up as loud as I can stand it and sing at the top of my lungs.

I get some weird looks when I do this in my car.

We're not about to lose our pride!

It Can Happen. That song rocks.

Leave It and OOALH are tied for second place. Yes, I love Owner. Curiously enough, I have never heard this song on the radio.

(Is it just me, or does Jon do a Brian Johnson impression on City Of Love?)

Also, Our Song is quite special, as I live along the Good King’s Highway (Interstate 75).

Leave it comes in second. My family Loves this song.

As far as just the CD goes, I would go with OOALH, but I have been listening to "Hold On" live, done on the 88 Generator tour...wow. Trevor made Hold On INCREDIBLE in concert. All his signature finger work during the song but everything he adds to it fits so well and actually made Hold On sound better when I listen to the original on 90125. He also does a heavier version of OOALH with his guitar.

But I'm not too wimpy to say Our Song is my least favorite, no offense meant to anyone from Toledo.

Ah, 90125!

Well, my favourite songs are Hold On, Cinema, City Of Love and Hearts.

I do like all the other songs but those ones stuck out for me, especially COL, I think its a great song! The main riff is so heavy, what a great track!

A lot of people say that 'Hearts' is the best song, but whilst it's good and the lyrics are nice, I prefer the moderately progressive 'Cinema'. On the whole I think the albums quite cheesy and over- produced, but Hearts, It can happen and Cinema are worth the price if it's not too bad.

Well, I finally listened to this album this week.
Stronger than what I expected - or remembered.
Certainly good music.
The two songs that stood out for me are "Hold On" and "Hearts".
Love the harmony and the chord changes at the end of Hearts.

Changes.

It's my favorite, always has been. For years I've had "CHANGES" on my license plate. :valintine

I also like City Of Love.

Thats an interesting quote there from Mr. Rabin! I definatly agree with it; that song is Heavy Metal without a doubt, no matter what anyone says..that riff is just so heavy and in your face, it cant be anything else..well, give or take heavy rock I suppose ;)

City of Love has always been one of my favourites and its a shame that not alot of people seem to like it on here so its good to see a fan of the song :)

Yeah! Cinema is a very good song. I thought it is not liked by the fanswhen I looked to a Polish site called Yesomania (www.yes.iq.pl) where Cinema was voted as the worst song on the album. I'm really suprised that so many people voted for it. Besides Cinema is great as OOALH intro always, but especially on HOB.

It's my opinion that 90125 is the best Yes album of all times. 90125 is a great record, from start to finish and without Trevor Rabin (whom is a great and underestimated guitar player), the band probably wouldn't have reunited. Commercially it eclipsed anything Yes had done before and brought them to new heights of popularity to a new generation Yes fans, including me!
And a question; Why is it taking so long to get 9012 Live out on DVD?

RABARKS
04-17-2005, 05:21 PM
It's well produced. But it's too little yes. And too much Foreigner/Whitesnake.
You may say, well at least they were going in a different direction, trying something new. Okay, but it's.... commercial. There, I said it.
And there was only one rule in the Yes-way-of-doing-things, and that's :try anything, but don't go pop.
I allready had a hard time with Steve getting into that field with Asia, but this was even worse.
That's not to say there aren't good moments. Leave it (acapella version, please) It Can Happen, even Owner are excellent. Chris and Alan are virtually invisible on Owner, but they do shine on Our Song, especially Chris. It may well be the last song where you can just follow his line throughout the song and love every second.
Low points: City Of Love's hardrock, Hearts' and Changes' feeble attempts at capturing the old glory.

Hearts demonstrates how Squire and White, with Rabin, carried on the "Yes sound". Of coarse Jon came in the 9th inning and sang beautifully.

City of Love friggin ROCKS me. Always gets me going.

Cinema- smokesssss.................

Hold On is great too.

Not to mention the hits.
