What is your fave song on Fragile?

Rogo

I love this song. The gloomiest thing they've done! "...of warmth when you die..." brrrrr...

Here in Norway, we can relate to this.

Icy piano solo...great!

Sorry. This is impossible. I couldn't split, Roundabout, South side of the sky, Heart of the Sunrise or Long Distance runaround. They are all to good. If I did I would feel like I am betraying the others.

Yes Oz, the multiple choices in this poll are allowed. You could vote for all of the songs you mentioned...

I've just finished listening to the album , and as good as all the songs are ; "Heart of the Sunrise" seems to 'kick it up a notch'!

One of the best piano solos!!! Great bass lines from Chris!!!

I love South Side of the Sky; the playing and rhythm are great. I like the studio version of Heart of the Sunrise, too. It's one of the few cases when I actually prefer the studio version to a live version of Yes songs. I'm so sick of Long Distance Runaround--how many versions of that can we get? It's one of my least favorite Yes songs of all time. It's also annoying that they cut out the keyboard solo out of their Roundabout encore in their shows.

02-05-2002, 12:13 AM
I wish I would have remembered that I could vote for more than one. It was hard to choose between Heart of the Sunrise and South Side of the Sky but I finally went with South Side of the Sky. 2 great great songs indeed!

These polls are so hard ! I love almost everything Yes has done. FRAGILE's greatest track, however, is HEART OF THE SUNRISE. I think SOUTH SIDE OF THE SKY is a great recording, but I also think it is slightly overrated simply because it's an obscure tune that has been performed live only a few times. Mind you I said slightly. I can't believe the other tracks on FRAGILE did so poorly in this poll. I've seen many bashings of LONG DISTANCE RUNAROUND at Yesfans. LDR is one of the bands' signature tunes. The bassline alone makes the 3 minutes and 33 seconds well worth it, and the segway into THE FISH is one of prog rock's finer moments.

deus ex Machina
02-05-2002, 11:15 AM
I'm not really sure if the pronounciation is silent for 'deus'. I've always thought of it as in terms of [ duce X Machine-a] myself. That's a good question. Maybe

Onto Fragile.

Roundabout- what can I say. It's roundabout. The commercial song that really pulled me in. That and seeing them on Vh1's 100 greatest artists of hard rock. The song kicks through and through, even though it has a melody that reminds me strongly of tasting olive oil and sourdough. It doesn't have the sweetness of saaaaaay The Reveal Science of God, but in that own special way, it's got a rich flavored sour sound to it.

Cans is a wonderful display is Wakeman's unique flavoring added to the recipe. Library study music! next.

This next part is something of a perplexity. 'we have heaven' and the footsteps clomping before 'South Side of the Sky' (and not forgetting "we have heaven" after "Heart". I certainly wouldn't call it a production blunder like cutting off "To be Over" too soon and not letting it draw out and fade away. It's obviously there for a reason. The best way I could find meaning to these parts is by making reference to the Monty Python movies and how in the middle of scenes they would cut to these cartoons of crazy little guys walking around and seeing suns jump up and down and responding with a "stop that!" "stop that!" It doesn't have much practical meaning from what I can see, but I can certainly imagine the kind of funny little British interludes that would help me to see why they are where they are. (say that again?!?!).

South Side of the Sky. Awesome piece. Visual perspective- something closely related to the scene in Lord of the Rings right before the mines where the fellowship is trudging on those snowcapped mountains and sauruman is trying to blast them with avanlanches.

five percent is...well...five percent.

Long Distance and the Fish. I think I must have heard this tune on the radio 20,000 times but never with the Fish added on. It never really drew in my attention until I heard the song with the fish added in. From that point on, it becomes something of a classic for me, through and through. Named after, I believe, bruford's nickname of Chris Squire. Am I right here? Anyways I wont go into the mental imagery.

Heart of the Sunrise is anscending to the top of a mountain with your pickaxe and your crampons strapped. Then sitting ontop of it all and waiting for the morning light to come peeking out from the bottom of the horizon, waving in another day. Great song. Haven't listened to it as much as I should.

And there you have it.

I have always considerd them to be joined as one as well. I love SSotS. Wish they'd do it concert. Very rare and only done on one tour (I forget which one) even then a very rare song.

Yes, the fish was Bruford's nickname for Squire who spent l-o-n-g hours in the tub. He is also a Picses (the fish in the zodiac).

We all know Fragile broke some serious new ground at the time of it's release.

I really thought that SSOTS would get clobbered here. That was my choice, and it seems to be very close!!! HOTS is a close second. Tomorrow it might be the other way around, they are that close.

when i was just getting into Yes, i was lying in my bed on Saturday night. I was tired and i always used to listen to the radio before i dozed off. I was sleeping when i heard the opennig from Heart of the sunrise. I woke up and laid silently listtening to my radio. I listened to every note and knew that it had to be yes. I (didn't know who it was at the time) knew in my heart it was YES. I sat and listened and listened until the piano solo in the song and The DEE Jay interrupted the song and said who it was,. Now before we boycott this radio station in Houston, it was a long time ago, 1986. The Dee Jay, obviously didn't know that the song wasn't over but it was the comment that upsetted me. She said, "This is Yes by request and it just keeps on playing i guess. It's just too long and stupid." And proceded to play another song. Now i wanted to hear the end of that song, so i waited till the next day and bought the album, and enjoyed the rest of it.

4 years later, i was at an internship at a radio station with a friend , I met the DeeJay who said those things and confronted her about what happened. She began to apologize to me and she told me that she recieved over 100 phone calls about her comment in a matter of minutes and if i was still listening i would have heard the entire song played over in at the request of all the Yes fans in houston who called, but i went to sleep watching the Sunday morning sunrise that day......Peace this was a true story by the way.

Oh what wild secrets you have, hypatia.

I go for Heart of the Sunrise, I've always been impressed by Jon's beautiful singing and how he reaches those high notes so passionately. This piece also includes a lot of drum candy by Bill.

I know what you mean about Five Percent for Nothing. All it adds to the album is proof that they weren't ready to do a concept album yet. Of course, next they did with CttE, so they weren't that far off, and the fact that only 35 seconds of the CD are so hopelessly random shows it.

My favorite is the whole album minus Five Percent for Nothing.

05-21-2002, 10:18 PM
Hey Nautilus, Have you heard the story about the origin of 5% for nothing?

Also, welcome to the site!

Nautilus
05-21-2002, 10:25 PM

FRAGILE is the second in a series of six absolutely flawless studio albums in a row, in my opinion. Not a wasted track really. Bruford's 5% comes across as a purcussion excercise from an instruction tape, but it's a very cool "anti-epic". The rest of the album - a reward for ears that have been very good!

At the moment my personal favourite Yessong is not:

Close To The Edge
Turn Of The Century
Awaken
Perpetual Change
...etc...

but WE HAVE HEAVEN! I love it.

Tell the moon dog, tell the march hare (We haaaaave heaaaven)
He is here, he is here...

How a song can be so good yet so simple ia amazing.

And it's definately on my desert isle list.
I think it's really cool how everyone had there little solo spot on Fragile...
What's even cooler is how in the future of the band, everyone got their little solo-spot... in the structure of a greater epic!
Like in Tales, or on Relayer (Soundchaser: the guitar-solo/cadenza fits perfectly into the context of the greater whole...

We see a glimmer of this in the way Long Distance segues into The Fish. And of course the piano-solo in the middle-eight of South Side.
But it seems that the band got much better at this in a very short time.

I never tire of Fragile. It's a wonderful magical album. I remember the first listen, playing it on a battery-operated turntable I had when I was 14. Listening to The Fish while taking a bath as steaming-hot as I could stand it! One of those moments of pure luxury and decadence, and the album always comes across in such a way for me, even today!

It was my first proper Yes album.

On the original vinyl version there weren't any photos on the cover. The outside cover was of course the first Roger Dean painting. Inside the gatefold sleeve were the credits & lyrics. However there was an A5 size booklet inside which had more credits and some photos. These photos have been included on the CD release & certainly Rick is there.

I recently bought the Rhino re-issue of Fragile which I'm delighted with, but I have one question for other YesFan members -
Is there distortion during the fast louder parts of "South Side..." or is there deliberate noise to mimic the snowstorm referred to in the lyrics ? It's especially obvious at about 6:20 onwards. I don't have the earlier remaster or the vinyl LP to compare it with. Is it intentional or was the original recording flawed in some way ? Thanks.

Favourite songs on this album for me are: 'Roundabout', 'We Have Heaven' 'South Side of the Sky' and 'Heart of the Sunrise'

Each of those songs are beautifully arranged and have some wondeful vocals and give plenty of those 'goosebump' moments! I find the vocals in 'We have heaven' extremely gorgeous and South side of the sky has so much atmosphere to it! I cant help but think of the part in LOTR when the fellowship are going over the snowy mountains before they get to moria

I can' believe anybody voted in Cans & Brahms! Ack! I'm gonna buy 6 Wives by Wakeman, just so I can burn a copy of Fragile that replaces that icky thing with "Catherine of Aragon"--as was (reportedly) the song that Wakeman wanted to do but couldn't due to "contractual hangups".

My favorite song on Fragile is South Side of the Sky. I especially like the wordless-voiced section along with the icy piano solo in the middle of the song. I even wrote a poetic evaluation of South Side for my Junior English class & learned much more about the meaning of the song... Maybe that's why I like it more than the others.
If I had to rank them, I believe I would have them in this order:

1) South Side of the Sky
2) Long Distance Runaround
3) Roundabout
4) Mood for a Day
5) Heart of the Sunrise
6) The Fish
7) Five Per Cent for Nothing
8) We Have Heaven
9) Cans and Brahms (I like classical music, but this I don't particually enjoy this)

I would have to say that Roundabout, Long Distance Run Around, South Side of the Sky, and Heart of the Sunrise are my favorites, but not necessarily in that order. I like South Side of the Sky the most probably because it has a relaxing feel to it. If I feel stressed, I'll usually listen to this song.

My favorite is either South Side of the Sky or Heart of the Sunrise. I'd say South Side of the Sky but I really don't like the original version of that song. I listened to the acoustic version first, and like it a lot better. So I guess I'll go with Heart of the Sunrise as my favorite, because I love that song.

Although I enjoy almost every song on the Fragile album, "Roundabout", "South Side of the Sky" and "Heart of the Sunrise" are my favourite songs. I agree with MoonGate Climber about the middle section of "South Side of the Sky": the interplay between the piano and the vocals is simply outstanding.

Honourable mention goes to the first 30 seconds of "Schindleria Praematurus", a mind-blowing listening experience to be sure!

By the way, I once read that the title of the song "Five Per Cent
For Nothing" was created by the band as a comment about their agent at that time.

By the way, I once read that the title of the song "Five Per Cent
For Nothing" was created by the band as a comment about their agent at that time.
it was about their first serious manager. I read about it in Close To The Edge by Chris Welch. He helped them get shows at the Royal Albert Hall, and basically helped them get noticed. He got them a pretty crappy album deal (like 14 albums!) which means that instead of having two or three albums at a low share of profits, they had 14 albums like that. so, they dumped him unceremenomiously, and he thought he deserved five percent of the shares in the yes corporation (i might be wrong about exactly WHAT the five percent was, but it was five percent of earnings any ways) and the band didn't think he earned it. thence, five per cent for nothing, although, he says without him they never would have been where they are today which might be true.

Heart of the sunrise, with "Southside" a close two. I loved the fact that they pulled it out for the 35th ann. tour.I think Steve set a land speed record with the two plus octave run on that one. I wish they could have played both.

I personaly like We Have Heaven. i also like hearing it again at the end of Heart Of The Sunrise. I only had the classic yes version which doesn't have the We have heaven end. there is one right?? i got the rhino Cd version and i want to make sure it is on the real version too. :git[1]:

This is a great album. i'd say Close To The Edge is better but this is 2nd or 3rd to Close edge and The Yes Album.

1.South Side Of The Sky
2.Heart Of The Sunrise
3.Roundabout
4.We Have Heaven
5.Long Distance Runaround
6.Mood For A Day
7.The Fish
8.Cans And Brahms
9.Five Per Cent For Nothing

I think thats a pretty reasonable list of best to worst. i really do like We have heaven. i think it makes the album more full. thats just me.

9) Cans and Brahms (I like classical music, but this I don't particually enjoy this)

how could you put Five Per Cent For Nothing as better then We Have Heaven. Thats one of my favorites:angel:

I've been listening to the remastered extended addition of this CD lately. This just might be the best remastering of a CD I have ever heard. Fantastic!!! I'm loving the long version of America.

I have to go with roundabout, one of the first songs that got me into yes, dont those 8 minutes just flash by?! punchy, rocking, great vocals and one of yes' tunes that you can play to friends and they will dig it straight away (not many of those folks!)
and the 1st time i ever heard the vocal passage at the end i thought id died and gone to heaven, breathtaking.
