I actually don't like this album in its studio form, but I've always liked the Yesshows version of Time and a Word; Steve & Rick really made it come alive in away the lineup on this album couldn't even hope to, and Jon's voice had developed so much by then. I didn't really like Sweet Dreams until I heard the version on the "Live at QPR" DVD, made during the Relayer tour. Steve and Patrick made it sound great. I guess I like these songs, but I just don't think that Tony and Peter could really do them justice. I think I'd like other songs much more, such as Astral Traveller and Then if I heard later live versions

is the album's standout track. The Yes theme-shfiting trademark makes an impressive prototypical appearance here. I'd like to see this performed live, I think Chris and Alan could elevate it to something spectacular.

I'm re-discovering that album on CD. "The Prophet" is one of my favourite together with the dramatic "Then". That was a promising work at the time which still has interest.

"Astral Traveler" is so jangly and raw. It's definately my fave on the album, which I have played several times over the last couple of days.

THEN is my favorite off this album. THEN seems to point slightly in the direction of Yes music yet to come.

Well, on CD, this album is very very powerful. I picked "no opportunity" as my favorite song on this album, because it is very very trippy. Honestly, this is the closest I have ever heard to a "psycadelic" yes. I Love the mid section where Peter is playing that western rif on a wah wah pedal, then he repeats it with the orchestra behind him. I just love that. It is a good song to drive to as well. I can definitely see go-go dancers wiggling to this song. The second to me is "the prophet". I personally think Tony's hammond playing at the beginning of the song is delightfully wicked. He just attacks it!! This whole album just makes me smile with excitement.

Exactly! I would say that about 'Sweet Dreams' as well.
This album is sooo wonderful.
The innocense and that sweet flower power psychedelic love thang of late 60's, always hits me right in the center of my heart. Similar to the music of San Francisco at the time.
I guess as a young pre-teen romantic, I was very vunerable to that style of music considering the atmosphere of the emerging cultural revolution.

'THEN' has all the beauty, sweetness, honesty and optimism of that era all rolled into one great song.

I picked Astral Travller, but I like a lot of songs from this Album. I think it is an overlooked Gem! I love the old B&W footage of them playing "No Opportunity..." There is a brief clip of it on the Yesyears vid, but I have the whole thing taped years ago from USA's Night Flight show (Remember that?!?) Is this footage from the "Beat Club" show? Anyway, I think it sounds better with this live raw quality like in that clip...I also love the visual "Yes" that keeps appearing on the screen behind them throughout the song, then the big "NO!" at the end...too cool!

I voted Astral Traveller as my favorite tune from Time And A Word.
Great jam and strong work from Peter B. Very strong with a nice build to the instrumental break before the last verse. Admit it, you want to be an Astral Traveller. There is a big and dangerous universe out there and it begins with one step out the front door.

It is great to see the songs on this one that Yesfans like. Not really a clear cut leader on this one.

Then and The Prophet have grown significantly on me over the years. No Opp.. has always been fun to me. My favorite version of Time And A Word is the live KTA version.

I voted for "Then", though I was tempted to go for "No Experience..."

Of the first five albums, this one has been the hardest for me to warm up to, though each time through it gets a little better.

Not to offend anyone, but I find "Astral Traveler" to be almost unlistenable - not because of the composition or the performance, but because of the recording. Every time it comes on I immediately start fiddling around with the bass/treble controls, and I've not found a setting yet where the tinny rattling sound doesn't set my teeth on edge.

The Prophet. This song has a great intro and a great ending! Although I really like Sweet Dreams and Clear Days as well. Actually, the whole album is great!:D

This is a confusing album for me. I think The Prophet and Astral Traveller are fantastic but I have to admit that Sweetness and Everydays are two Yessongs that I can live without, they're just too nice!

I always liked "Then" from this album - mostly because of Tony's organ work.

I was finally able to give this album a real good listen. I like the album, allthough it's not one of my favorites. The orchestra works very well on some songs and absolutely not on others. My favorite track: Astral Traveller! I would love to seem them tackle this one live.

Sweet Dreams, Time and a Word and The Prophet for me. Astral Traveller really grew on me when I listened to it for the second time; great album!

No Oppurtunity Neccessary, No Experience Needed is my favourite. I really enjoy the swirling strings at the start, as well as Peter's guitar solo (which the string section repeats)

(I really like Dear Father too, but that's a bonus track so I guess that's why it wasn't included.)

I just adore THEN because its so capitvatingly capturing of the time back then. One line on it strikes hard everytime i hear that song its this:

Love is the only answer, hate is the root of cancer then

It just brings out the hippieness of the 70s its just amazingly good. I like Astral Traveller cuz its such a poppy/technoy type of song for its age and time.

Peace Out tchau listen to Yes everyday

Honestly, I don't like the album!
Why ?
The sound is VERY old, each song sound so old-fashioned,but I cannot blame you for liking them since I still wasn' t born when the album was released

I voted for Time and a word though, but it's still oldish for my ears,really..

Some of my faves:

1. Everydays: Just love how it goes through various mood changes, from the
the spaced out verse & the outlandish, trippy "well well well" refrain to the uptempo jazz/acid-rock guitar shredding (one of the few moments where Beater Panks isn't burried in the mix). Here, the orchestral arrangement works really well in supporting the overall atmosphere.

2. Astral Traveler: Intricate interplay between bass & drums; nice, funky guitar intro (ought to sample that). The chorus is a bit awkward, though, not really melodic; however, the vocal treatments (Leslie speakers, I guess) add an interesting, psychedelic texture.

3. Sweet Dreams: Nice pop song akin to "looking around". Whoever claims 90125 isn't "real" Yes is missing the point: The band was making pop music before they got all proggy, after all!

The other stuff is a mixed bag. Compared to the debut, it's a more diverse effort, albeit not as accessible.

Then. Tony' organ work is great and this was the jazziest I had heard the band. A lot of the elements for their future direction were in this song and the lyrics are great.

Astral -- this is the kind of esoteric ideas I always associated with Yes.

Astral is the song for me that really hints at what Yes will eventually become... great arrangement... long instrumental break, a la Siberian Khatru... second would probably be The Prophet...

btw, I think Jon's voice is put through a Leslie or a flanger... gives it a garbled stereo sound... that kind of dates the piece a bit...

Agree all the way! Chris' bass work is stellar as well. Heck, the whole band cooks on this tune - this is one I would love to see played live.

Hello.
For me this album will always sound strange.
It was the fouth that i came in touch with, after 90125, Close and Relayer.
It's raw and soft. Just a small step ahead Yes and two away from Fragile.

I'd love to hear Rick added on to this album ( no offence to Tony)

I think he would burn the 'fugue' section of AT with a monumental moog solo!

Just imagine Rick on Keys playing Astral Traveller or Then...wow!
We've already seen him playing Sweet Dreams at the Songs of Tsongas DVD...and I have to admit, I like this live version more than the original... *getting red*

I like a few songs on this album, but if I have to pick one, it would be clear days. I love the chord arrangements and Jon's voice is so sweetly sounding in that song.
