O.K. Here goes...
Yessongs was the first Yes album I bought. I found an original
vinyl copy (this was in 1984, and the 80's reprints had thin vinyl
and a truncated cover) with the photo booklet. What a discovery!
This album changed the way I think about music, and consequently,
the way I make music. For me this was a complete body of work,
encompassing the best of "The Yes Album", "Fragile", and CTTE.
My admiration for this band grew tenfold as I purchased each
studio album, and realized how differently they played in a live
context (moreso because Wakeman was playing Yes Album material,
and Alan was playing instead of Bill for most of it).
One sour note: the sound quality leaves much to be desired.
The Bruford tracks were recorded at smaller venues and sound
a lot better, but that's the price you paid (back then) for moving
up to playing sports arenas. Hence the echo-ridden sound on most
of the cuts. Offord was once quoted saying that he couldn't be at
the P.A. mixer AND in the mobile unit at the same time, thus having
to rely on Geoffrey Haslam to record the concerts.
If you only ever buy one Yes release in you life, this should be it!
