This is the best version of Gates I have ever heard. Howe's playing is radically perfect. The rest of the disks fall behind in value. But Gates is a must. Don't Kill the Whale is far better than on Tormato.

"Parallels" is also superior to the GFTO version. This one has more feel and urgency to it.

I agree with what's been said about Gates of Delerium, Don't Kill the Whale, and Parallels, but I also think that these versions of Wonderous Stories and Time and a Word are also better than their studio versions (especially Time and a Word)

can anyone make a comparison between the yesshows version of gates and the bonus disc version of gates that came with magnification? I haven't heard the yesshows version of gates but i think the bonus disc version of gates is pretty good, although i would take the studio version of it anyday.

Yesshows is better, although I like the Symphonic version a lot.

The Mag-bonus version is exquisite, but the Yesshows version
is THE live version out there. Yesshows is worth it for the live
Ritual as well.

I remember getting this on vinyl when it cam out. I don’t know about any of your copies, but on the UK version there was always a problem with ‘Parallels’, on side one - it always stuck in the breakdown just before the Moog solo. I took it back to the record shop, ‘Bruce’s in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place>Clydebank</st1:place>, about 3 times. Finally the guy got sick of me returning it and to prove a point played it at full volume in the store to make sure it played ok – it was like being in the Glasgow Apollo, it was so loud – and I grinned from ear to ear when the moog solo stared blasting out.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p> </o:p>
The bloody thing stuck when I got it home tho..and did for ever more – to the point that when I play the CD. I’m always expecting it to stick!

You probably came across a defective batch. I had that problem with Nilsson's Son Of Schmilsson once. I went through 5 returns before I got a good one.
The Yesshows version of Gates is what really got me back to Relayer. I didn't pay much attention to it the first time around, because I actually got mad at Rick for leaving, and at Yes for letting him leave, LOL! I had my own little boycott going. But, when I got Yesshows, the live Gates was so good, I went back to Relayer and re-visited it.

its a stunning version - especially the long guitar '"thing" just before the main keyboard melody after the battle sequence.

I don't know if I prefer the YESSHOWS version to the studio version, but I could be persuaded. It's 20 of music's best minutes, hands down. Just a f'in MONSTER. That, like most of YESSONGS, was a band at the absolute height of its powers.

I went well out of my geographical way to get the MAG bonus disk with "Gates" on it. Very disappointing. Slow motion, antiseptic. No firepower. No heft. Going through the motions. (YESSYMPHONIC version is a better representation of that era of Yes doing "gates," IMO.)

But we're all richer for having that YESSHOWS version available.

This live release SUCKED. I had a UNMIXED version of it be4 it got put on the album. The album version was tamed WAY DOWN! I was shocked how laid back it seemed vrs the EXACT same recording be4 the mixing.

This is my favorite version of Gates. Ritual as well...I think that all of these songs are better than their originals. I would rather hear these songs live than from their albums, with the exception of Gates. I like that on Relayer. I grew up only knowing Ritual from YesShows, and when I went and listend to Tales, I didn't like it as much.

Never liked the live version of Gates on Yesshows, I always thought it was singularly lacking, compared to the power and aggression of the studio version.

Im the opposite. I dont really like Relayer Gates' that much...I think Jons voice sounds weird - sorta pinky and perky....Yesshows is class.

I remember reading somewhere that these mixes were demo's from Chris, and he was outraged when Atlantic released it.

I love them both.

I do have to admit that it had been awhile since I had heard the Yesshows version... so I had to go revisit it when I read Ian's post to see if maybe I was just being too much of a fanboy. For me... it is great. I do, however, respect others diverse opinions.

You have to be happy with what you like. :headset:

One things for sure. Yesshows release must have been confusing for the Yesfan.....released 3 months after Drama. What did you lot think at the time? Jon was back? I was only 2 years old at the tim so I have eliminated myself from this discussion....

Yesshows release was delayed, I can't remember how many times, but I knew Jon wasn't back.

I bought it pretty much when it came out, as a hardcore Yesnut at the time. I loved it, despite pressing, or rather turntable problems; that pesky skipping on 'Parallels ' affected about three copies I had. In the end I got my money back and bought an American pressing of it, no problems there. In retrospect, I think it was a cynical attempt by Atlantic to try and cash in on a career that had imploded by then. One more drop of blood from the fatted calf. Little did they know a handsome South African and an old buddy were lurking in the wings.....

I'm with you on this. Plus it sounds almost overcompressed in the studio. Quite disappointing. Yesshows is superb, though I also love the Roosevelt and QPR versions...

GoD is very powerful live... after hearing that and Ritual on Yesshows before getting the studio versions of each, I feel the latter sound a bit stiff... the live ones are very energetic...

the one problem I have with the YS version of GoD is that Jon's guitar during Soon is almost inaudible... for most of that part there are no drums; it's the acoustic guitar that provides the rhythm (at least, in the studio version)... the gap sticks out to where, even if you'd never heard the studio version, you could tell something was missing there... on YS the Soon part just lags...

so... Soon is better on Relayer, though the song is better overall on YS...

DKTW and TAAW are far superior on YS... Parallels is improved and energized by that synth solo, which is a good contrast to the otherwise organ-only studio song... however... the organ just doesn't have the power of the studio version... like GoD, it's a tradeoff...

on Wonderous Stories live you can actually hear Alan... Steve's guitar on GFTO live is out of control - in a good way!
