Hey all. I am listenign to yet another Union tour show that I did not have before. For all the crap that was spoke of this album and said tour Yes is on FIRE in this show also. The crowd is absolutley INTO THE show. The sound is just one that I feel has not been done by them since. Not that tours that followed here bad, NOT AT ALL. But the full sound that was present due to the sheer numebr of folks playing just brings down the house. This is my all tiem fav tour. Based on all the boots I have from other tours, diff versions of same tours, the Union stuff just seems to have more fire in the belly then others. Rick is back and the last tour did a lot for the Fire but still not quite the same for me. ROCK ON BOYS!!!!!!

I stil think they should open the next tour with HOLD ON. Not eventhe whole tune, just have the place DARK and Alan sneaks out and starts pounding away on that opening beat, that woudl get the palce ROCKING!

Is there a ot of anomosity towards the Union tour? I thought it was fantastic. It was the only time I got to see many of those Yes members in concert [I've only seen YesWest in concert].
The stories of personal squabbles, needing "space," etc are common to the Union tour tales. I got to attend the show at MSG and thought it was great. I understand that Howe wasn't thrilled to share stage and sonic space with Rabin "the other guitarist." There were other issues regarding management at the time as well.

The anomosity was more towards the over produced mess of an album. There's actually some good stuff on it. I've recently dusted it off and have been giving it a listen. I like it of cousre, butmany didn't. As for the tour, for the most part the fans seemed to enjoy the shows. With that much ego on one stage, it seemed to work out rather well, and did a very hefty gate as well. Last BIG payday for the band. I agree with Tim about the fullness of the sound. Brufords hollendais, to Alan's meat & potatoes reaaly worked well IMHO. Of course you're going to get more when you've got 8 people on stage as oppposed to 5. But remember that was what 13 years ago or so. I certainly don't expect them to have the edge they had in their younger days. These guys are in their later 50's at this point. My biggest wish at this point is for Steve to go back to using a bit more dirt in his sound so to speak.

Rick Wakeman made his opinion of the Union album clear when he said:
"I call it the "Onion album". Because everytime I hear it....it makes me cry."

The Union tour was the only time I ever got to see Yes live, and I thought it was freakin' fantastic. All eight of them, in various subsets as appropriate to the particular song, and in the round to boot! Plus it was a long show (IIRC 2.5 hours with intermission).
The album has some problems, I'll admit, but the tour was great.

Unfortunately I didn't get to see the Union tour but have managed to get it on DVD. I have to say I think it is great. Then again I am a big Rabin AND Howe fan and Ricjk Wakeman is on great form. I can understand Steve Howe's reluctance at sharing things with Trevor Rabin - if you have a particular vision it is very difficult to imagine it anyway other than your own. Yopurs is no Disgrace is phenomenal though, especially the contrast between Howe & Rabin's solo spots. If only they had been able to carry on together what a band that would have been!

Saw the show in L.A. My three favorite moments were:
Long Distance Runaround - Fragile Yes
OOALH - 90125 Yes plus Wakemen
Awaken - all

Yeah yeah I know. Don't be draggin' up that old argument again.
The thing about Yes members is that they change their opinion about their own albums constantly, as most people do. Some of the time Jon would say that the period when they were producing a certain album was unsatisfying, other times he would say it was very rewarding.
Also, they are quite influenced by what the fans say. And when the fans say they don't like one album, they tend to agree. I'm sure most of them love Owner, yet they rarely play the song (until this year, that is) because they think the fans wouldn't like it.
Union is a helluvan album. The only regret in my life is that I didn't go to the concerts :crybby:

I didnt see them on the Union tour [being a young Yesfan has its downers!] but I have one bootleg and I must say I was blown away by the performances. The Trooper era songs were the highlights I think; Yours is no Disgrace, And you and I and Awaken were utterly fantastic. Awaken is the best i've ever heard on that bootleg [Denver '91]

The Union tour was fantastic, even if the album was a joke. I saw it in Dayton, OH, I think about the 5th show of the tour, and was blown away. I also have the video of Mountain View and a couple of boots (including Mountain View). Tim is absolutely right in praising this tour. They had a blast playing live together, that's obvious. What I like especially from the Mountain View show is the fun everyone was having (Rick making Trevor laugh so much he couldn't sing, the road crew messing with the band - especially the 'strut' during Saving My Heart- and Jon, Steve and Trevor sharing a mike - a la The Beatles - during ISAGP).
A fun concert to be at, to listen to, and to watch. I'd love to see them do it again.

I love what Trevor said about the Union tour. "I don't know how this is going to work out. We're getting roadies, but we might need referees."
I saw Yes on the Union tour back in April of 91 when they were in Virginia and again in July in Landover, Maryland. I loved both shows. They looked like they were all having fun.
I wish I could have been to the one in Philadelphia a week earlier. Right before Trevor did his solo, Jon announced to the audience that Trevor had just become a US citizen, and he played a few bars from the Star Spangled Banner and Yankee doodle.
I heard that the members of Yes wrapped him in an American flag.
I'd have loved to have seen that. :kissme:

I don't know who was talkin' smack about the Union tour, but my first Yesshow was the Minneapolis stop on that tour, and that remains the best Yes concert I've ever seen/heard. The album has some good songs buried under poor work by Jonathan Elias, and you won't get me to change my opinion on that, no matter what you say.

Does anyone have a copy of the Minneapolis show from the "Union" tour? I've been looking for 14 years now, and have still never found it. Did anyone record it?

Isn't it interesting that some of the best Yes tours coincide with turmoil within the band - Tormato, union, 2004......

If you look at the Yesyears dvd footage of rehearsals in Penasacola for the first gig of the tour the tension between some of the band is so obvious. I kinda though Jon and Trevor were gonna exchange punches! By the time they hit Denver a month later it was just as obvious that everyone was having a great time! Well.... maybe not Bruford. He still had that snotty and condescending look on his face most of the time.

Well, that's just Bill. He's always got a look of .."Why Im I here..Im better than everybody." Look about him...
The man is talented, and fully admitted that he did Union for the bread. I was very happy to see him there though!!
