Why is his photo on the album?
and does he play on any of the songs?

Steve Howe is not playing on any of the tracks on this alblum.I think Peter Banks had left the group before the photography had been done for the cover. This photo always confused me also.I assume that the time line between Banks departure and Howes joining was very swift.

On the original ( import ) album , Peter Banks is one of the 5 photographs featured on the backside.
You are correct about Peter leaving and Steve joining for the subsequent 'American' cover.
Also kind of funny that Steve Howe has mentioned he wouldn't mind re-doing the " Time and a Word" project.

The band thought it would confuse their audience to show Peter on the album when they'd be touring with Steve (and they still had a chance to change the picture.) But even on the American release his picture appears on the back, not Steve’s.

Peter didn't realize this was taking place until he finally saw it. He nearly puked with disgust and disappointment. Naturally upset about losing recognition on his work in such a "featured" way, he's yet to have any sort of reconciliation with anyone in the band.

It was great hearing his new rendition of "Astral Traveler" on the TALES FROM YESTERDAY tribute album. It's as good as the best of his work on his 80's album, INSTINCT.

I read that Yes in fact mixed Peter's guitar way down in the mix on purpose too, because they weren't happy with his playing or something....well obviously I guess, because they kicked him out.
