So, which of the two versions do you consider the best and why?

For me, it is the Yesshows version. I have heard many people say that they love the real church organ on the studio version, but to me the Yesshows version, give out some much more energy and especially Steve is on top form here. I really get an energy boost every time I listen to it!

I would have to go along with The original studio version. It has a better tonal quality I guess for lack of a better discrioption.

Steve really rips it up on the Yesshows version, excellent !

Yesshows has more energy, no doubt about it, but the recording quality is far superior on the studio version. Which is why I'd like to see a very high quality live recording with today's technology. Hint. Hint.

The YesShows version lacks a couple of things. First is the quality of the recording, which, due to the time frame can't really be avoided. Second, however, is that glorious pipe organ. There is simply no substitute. Perhaps, I'll be pleasantly surprised at Rosemont and technological improvements will be able to provide a grand pipe organ sound. We shall see in 45 days.

I absolutely agree with you here Jim!
The guitar parts on the studio version were a little, er...
tenative. A bit too much noodling in there... Though, truth be told, I would rather hear Howe 'noodling' than most other guitarists playing their magnum opus.

The live version has spirit, and though the soloing still meanders just a bit, it has heft and presence. Howe worked-up more concrete parts, played them till his fingers knew every parameter, and then revelled in embellishment.
And THAT'S the wonderstuff!

Another aspect to Parallels that I love are Chris's backing vocals... If you can CALL them backing vocals.
Chris worked-up a contrapuntal second lead vocal which overlaps Jon's seamlessly as a Bach fugue.
If only they had mixed Chris's vocals a bit higher! Oh well. There are underground recordings out there where they ARE mixed hotter, and it adds another dimension to a song which already bridges musical parallel universes.

Anyhoo: Count me in for the LIVE version.

I love the fact that it rocks the world, and is driven by a CHURCH ORGAN!!! Captain Nemo on LSD... E. Power Biggs on shrooms...
What more could one wish for?

I know what else one could wish for...

PARALLELS live in 2004!
One hears rumors out there... ;)

Sounds like they may open with it. I like the idea, I hope Steve is up to it, I think it could really get the show off to a rocking start !!!!!!!!!!

Is it me, or does the Yesshows version of PARALLELS sound like it's in mono?

Studio version -- sorry, but even though it's a real portative pipe organ on Yesshows, the live take isn't majestic enough. The church reverb (even down a phone line!) is what gives the studio version the edge.

And personally, I didn't find Steve's lines tentative in the studio version, either ...

I like the studio [GFTO] version better, but only by abit. The sound is much more crisp and I tend to pick up on everything alot better, although the Yesshows version is really raw and full of energy!
