View Full Version : March 5, 1974 My first Yes concert (Tales!)
How it all started:
"Your Move" was in the jukebox at the local ice cream shop (Dairy Queen) where my oldest sister worked. So, she bought the Yes album.
I went to play the album once and heard "Yours is no Disgrace". Wow, these guys are good.
"Roundabout" was on the radio. I found it on a K-Tel compilation LP my other sister had.
My keyboardist had Close to the Edge. I heard it a few times.
A Yes concert was coming in March, so we bought tickets (my sister came, too). I had already seen Creedence, Doobie Brothers, and Grand Funk.
They played Walter Carlos's "Spring" on tape prior to "Firebird". I was STUNNED by Siberian Khatru. I had no idea rock music was at this level. I was hooked for life.
I sat through all of CTTE, Tales (sans Remembering) and Roundabout. Yes never lost me. I was on top of it all. Just a young kid. It was easy. My sister cried during Nous Sommes du Soleil ("Ritual").
Now, the same lineup is back with me. Thanks, guys.
P.S. On that same night, Elvis was playing!

That was my first Concert also Tales at Garden...not on the ticket but the newspapers had Yes With Rick Wakeman...So i thought i was going to see Rick Wakeman open for the group Yes...I know a friend of mine got me the ticket..and have been a Fan since....was At the time i listening to elton, doobies, souther rcck,who,zep....that was some rock era for me 74' through 79'. I could not afford the vast amount of shows i went to in the70's now..back then $4.50-$8.50 tops...The Who 10th anniversary Tour was $17.50 A huge white ticket...i think with bad company....Cat Stevens Came out of a opening acts Magicians Box...that was cool especially not figuring on that to hapen and being under some influence at the time, even if it was just the blowing in the wind odors....

My first show was just one month earlier. I saw Yes on February 12, 1974 in Roanoke, VA. They played all four pieces of TFTO, all of the Close to the Edge Album, "Roundabout" and "All Good People." I had been a fan for two years, but had never had the opportunity to see the band live. Next month I will be attending my 18th Yesshow. It has been a wonderful ride.

Remember the way it started
leaves on a stream
seasons to dream when we were younger
we were home
And did we just keep on running
tripping over our fears
or was it the years
changing our laughter leaving home
Alright! We were all there!

That's dating ourselves...Walter hadn't become Wendy yet.

Ah, you noticed. I still have some of the LP's and it says "Walter". On that date it was Walter. I'm just being historically correct. I think G. Roddenberry moved to Ceylon, too!
