Where does he use the fretless in all of his recordings inc. Yes??
I know these but will bow out unless the participants ask me to weigh in.
Enjoy!:)
He doesn't use a fretless in all of his recordings including Yes.
Can you rephrase the question?

i got tech probs..so that is why i am 2003 now.
What I was asking is this.
Does anybody know how many songs that Chris has recorded on a fretless? Yes and any other recordings can be included.
Rand
Awaken (partial)
Turn of the Century (maybe. He isn't using his Ric, though).
NOT Run through the Light (Trevor Horn played bass).

According to Global Bass Online, he used a fretless of part of "Close to the Edge," which I was really surprised to find out. I'll have to go back and listen to the original version to see if I can spot it.

Something on TALK ... Where Will You Be? maybe. The black upright electric type thing he played at that show was fretless, I believe.
Fretless on CttE? Quiet middle section?

...Fretless on CttE? Quiet middle section?
That would be my guess. Those deep octave slides during 'I Get Up/Down' sound pretty smooth. He's playing a fretless on Silent Wings Of Freedom isn't he? I'm a guitarist, not a bassist, so it isn't always obvious to me, but I sort-of took it for granted that OTSWOF was played on a fretless. Am I correct there? Eureka! :D
I'm surprised that Squire doesn't use a fretless more often than he does. His style reminds me of Jaco Pastorius at times: You know, that over the top fluidity always has a fretless feel to it...
Anyway, it'll be interesting to hear which songs actually are fretless.

thank you, I am amazed at the response.
No fretless on Tormato.
Congrats to the fan who said The Remembering.
Close To The Edge right after Rick's organsm.....check out the long drawn out slides that don't happen in the earlier verses.
Anyone have Conspiracy-The Unknown?
No fretless on Turn Of The Century...I saw it live on Yesshows '77..he played a Gibson Les Paul Recording bass...it has what they call low-impedance pick-ups...and I think a longer neck for the high F# he hits in the Wakeman piano solo.
Good guessing...let's see what else happens-ok?
If anyone wants to PM me that's cool too.
May peace be in your way,
Rand

That's very easy!, Onward (Keys to Ascension) and his new song in 35th Aniversary

Sorry Kid...:( I just watched Onward on the KTA video and he is playing the Yellow Ric a very fretted instrument.
btw-the steady quarter note lines are played by Rick and Chris plays a very subtle part very laid back.
As far as New World Symphony goes I think it's not fretless but need to study more.
thanx for your post.

Of all the basses overdubbed on the studio version of THE FISH, could there be a fretless among them?

maybe...i always assumed all were rics...but come to think of it there is one that slides quite easily with super mega insane tremelo. I hear 4 how many do you hear?
also, there are 2 bass traks on Dreamtime-Magnification.

I was thinking that parts of "Bring Me to the Power" are fretless.
Thanks for your kind salutions, Mr. Grey.

Bring Me To The Power is either a Tobias 4 string tuned B-E-A-D-or a 5-string-B-E-A-D-G or a Carvin 6-B-E-A-D-G-C....and none of those are fretless.
In the Going For The One Tour book they say he has a Ric-Fretless although I have never seen it on stage.

Hi, this is my first post to YesFans . . .
What better place to start than the aspect that first got me into Yes back in '84 or so . . . the bass!
WRT fretlessness, it is often possible for a fretted to sound fretless via use of compression and chorus effects, and vibrato. Chris, or his sound techs, like to do that a lot, it seems; the new tracks on Ultimate Yes -- if the live broadcast performance of 1/26 is representative -- are actually played on a Martin acoustic bass guitar which sounds like it underwent such processing.
Jeff Berlin is another bassist who often makes his fretted sound fretless this way.
So, to answer the topic question -- only on "The Remembering" (that Guild) and "Awaken" (one neck of his triple-neck bass) does Chris play fretless, I believe.
Interesting note: he still plays it with a pick, it seems!
Here is some trivia--look at either the 78 tour program or the 79----one of them has a pic of Squire playing a rick fretless, with that cool looking drape(black and white) that partially covered his arms. What song would he have used that???? He would not use it on Awaken, as that has fretted parts and the chimy six-string he uses as Rick builds up his organ solo. Any thoughts??????
If it's the Tormato tour, I would guess Circus of Heaven.
