This week I put in the Union show I have on tape for the first time in a long time. I know the tour had its issues but they all seemed to really get along well. Rick and Trevor really seemed to enjoy each others company. There was a lot of joking and kidding going on up on stage, lotz of talking during tunes between various members. It was nice to watch. I would love to see another tour of that type take place. The full sound was nice as a result of all the guys playing.

I love that show! Saw it live in Indy in 1991, and I have two shows on tape, and love them all!!!

you know who my fav axe man is, but i had to give rabin a shot after hearing 'hearts' tune-it blew me away!!
i really enjoyed the union show, too-saw them at the palace of auburn hills in 91 and it was excellent.. of course i didnt really know about the 'rivalry' of trevor and steve then, but i was wondering howe all those excellent musicians were going to
1) decide on which tunes to play and who would play on them
and
2)how would they all get along touring with each other..
i was not disappointed in the least with union-tour OR album!!
i look at it as just another chapter in a long line of wonderful stories-ever-changing-all GREAT!
i wouldnt mind another union AT ALL.. but i know it's up to THEM to decide..[but would they ask igor, tom and/or billy to join them, as well??]

i absolutely agree, tim..
it WAS a lovely full, lush sound with them all up there..
[but can you imagine [hehe] the nightmares for the sound crew?? lol!!]

Yea I saw that tour 2x that year. Dayton and Cin. I still think that tour was some of the best sounding live Yes done!

I just had the dvd of it, that I ordered from Japan, in and I have to say that from memories I always thought this was about the best tour I saw/heard (I went to the ABWH tour, Union tour, OYE tour, Ladder tour and Full Circle tour) and gues what? I was right!!

I really love the dvd. The sound is very good. It's a recording from the last show they did in the U.S. and they are really enjoying themselves on stage, especially from Owner on. Rick does a great solo at the end that song, walking in front of the first row, with his keyboard round his neck, almost sitting on people's laps. At the beginning then of ISAGP he's got squad to do, so he decides to shake some samba shakers, first pinching Trevor's ass and then saying something in his ear that almost makes Trevor crack up. At the end of the song Trevor and Steve go up to each other, playing and singing together(!!) through Jon's microphone. At the beginning of "Saving My Heart" ( and this live version actually made me like the song (a bit) for the first time!), it being the last show, the crew decided to pull a joke on the guys and come dancing over the stage from right to left, with a kind of popcornbag over their heads, witch makes the whole band laugh!
I can really understand why Rick still says this was the tour with Yes he enjoyed the most. It really shows! And besides all this fun, there was some really good playing going on. Definetly the best version of YIND was played that tour, the best version of Owner, the best version of ISAGP (I have wanted them to drop this song for a long time, but if they play it like this, they can play it twice a concert!) and the version of Awaken ranks up very high to!
I am very happy that I have this dvd, it really shows Yes at their very best!!

They all were very loose in this video. Cracking jokes among them selves and the like. It appeared to me that up on stage while playing they could talk and hear each other decently. Is it that easy to hear on stage while playing? Didn't seem to me that they had to YELL at each other to hear.
With all the know issues among them on that tour, they sure did sound good.

Opening the show with “Yours is No Disgrace” is always brilliant. It’s a great way to start the show. In this case, it allowed them to get both guitarists and "their" drummers to duet, right at the beginning of the show. (Sorry, Alan. I know you appeared on more YesAlbums with and without Steve than Bill ever did, but you know what I mean.) I've heard complaints that Trevor didn't show much originality and that his lead on that song was generically Hard Rock (or Pop Rock, whatever.) What Trevor did was, unlike Steve, fall in to the scale (whose name I can't recall) that is very Mediterranean sounding (Root, flat 2nd, major 3rd, etc. A little help with the scale's name, anyone?) It's very exotic and, yes, very popular with the Hard Rock crowd. It also sent chills down my spine the first time I watch/heard this video. Brilliant! It was a whole new slant on the song. Go Trevor!

Of course, the video didn’t include the entire show. The set list that night was:

excerpt from “the Firebird Suite”,
“Yours Is No Disgrace”,
“Rhythm Of Love”,
“Shock To The System”,
“Heart Of The Sunrise”,
“Clap”,
“Make It Easy/Owner Of A Lonely Heart”,
“And You And I”,
“Drum Duet”,
“Changes”,
“I've Seen All Good People”,
“Solly's Beard”,
“Saving My Heart/Whitefish/Amazing Grace”,
“Lift Me Up”,
“Wakeman Solo”,
“Awaken” and
“Roundabout”.

That means that the video failed to include “Shock To The System”, “And You And I”, the Drum Duet, “Changes” and “Lift Me Up”. Bummer! I’m particularly interested in the Drum Duet. I thought that the combination of Alan and Bill made a powerhouse of the rhythm section. Wow!

Great tour, great video. :D

No, sadley not, it is the same as the VHS, but great nevertheless!!!!Actually, Mr. Holland, I was making reference to those songs which didn't appear on my laserdisc. And that does make a bit of a difference. On my ANDERSON BRUFORD WAKEMAN HOWE laserdisc they included "The Meeting" - which did not appear on the VHS – as well as all of the songs that did. Likewise on my laserdisc of King Crimson’s THREE OF A PERFECT PAIR - LIVE IN JAPAN) I got “Discipline” as an additional track not on the VHS.

Does anyone know if The Meeting" is on the ABWH DVD? (Which, I think, is currently only available through Brazil.)

I have the original ABWH dvd, and The Meeting is on it.I believe the reason "The Meeting" was originally left off of the VHS release was sound quality. On my laserdisc there is a distinct "buzzzz" in the right channel throughout much of the song.

Did this noise make it on to the DVD as well or did they clean it up?

I bought the official VHS release from Geffen and it had "The Meeting"...with no buzz.

What I don't understand is why the first version of the CD didn't have "Startship Trooper".

Are any DVD's from Union and/or ABWH still available? I understand these are rather hard to find and probably can only be located used. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would love to add either or both to my DVD collection.

Thanks,

Jay

It is a crime that an official live CD or 2CD of the Union tour didn't come out (I got to hear it tho...Thanx Judy!), and a complete DVD of the show, one that is more available anyway. I keep, hoping that something like this will be released. Having another Union-type tour again would be incredible...the ultimate Yes event.

I downloaded the Union show via WinMX just the other day. The quality of the video is excellent, as is the audio. It actually came down in two parts (part 1 and part 2 - duh), which is nice because each part will fit on a single DVD-R. My intention is to burn the show to two DVD-Rs. I know, that's not moral. But the import places that carry it would never get my money anyways, so no one's "losing" anything, and I get to watch the show.

If you have WinMX, search for YES UNION video. I'm on right now.
