View Full Version : Should Chris change his solo?

We've seen Chris playing his solo over and over and over again with a few changes here and there.
Do you think he should play and sing one of his songs instead of a bass solo?
Here's my opinion:
Chris has some great songs like Can you Imagine, Run with the Fox, Hold out Your Hand, etc.
If I saw Chris singing one of these songs in this tour, that would be a dream come true.
People say Chris likes attention, well this would be the perfect thing to do then.
........................DAMN IT CHRIS!!!!!! REPLACE YOUR SOLO FOR A SONG!!!!!!!
I would think after 20+ years he should. It bores me to tears. I'd prefer they just drop it. I play bass and really don't like bass solos.

Watching and hearing Chris do the The Fish is still amazing.
I've been attending Yes concerts for 34 years and have never missed a tour. Chris's solo is still the best!

I enjoy the fish too! I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE CHRIS SING LEAD FOR A SONG!

I'd prefer songs over solo's, but I believe YES know's best in what to give us.

On the full circle tour the total time taken for the solo spots was around 30 minutes......hmmmm.....just enough time for Gates and OTSWOF :D

Hmmmm, he HAS been doing that solo for a while and it WOULD be great if they did OTSWOF.
Yeah, I think it's a good idea to break it up a bit.

I don't know?
I'm always blown away by Chris' playing.
But it might be nice to hear a solo song by Chris BUT then that opens the door for solo songs and YES has enough music to choose from without diving into the solo Albums.

I would prefer it if Chris played a solo AND a song.
Both.
Parallels and Whitefish. And maybe even a Yessified 'Hold Out Your Hand'.
I vote for more Squire!

- Add changing his wardrobe and we could have been living in a perfect world!

well, going on from that logic, it would be very good indeed if the Squiremeister was allowed to play a few songs.
Two votes.

Song vote from me. Love The Fish to death but wouldn't mind hearing something from his solo stuff - Safe (Canon Song) maybe. Alan could accompany and Rick could add the strings/sax stuff. So it would still be a kind of break.
I'm with Earl: Parallels and Whitefish. Kinda like surf-n-turf. Yum!

You know... There's a bit during the old GFTO rehearsals (you know, the one's we're supposed to have never seen! HARHAR:ele:) where Alan and Chris are doing this real cool lopsided cadence together, at about 100 miles an hour.
Now THAT would be a cool solo (Duo? Duo).
In the old video, Chris is playing through an 'octavia' tone pedal, he's getting these rich chordings on the bass... AT 100 Miles an hour! Alan playing so maniacally that his bass-tom finally falls over!
So, add that bit to WhiteFish, and then knock us out with Parallels! That's the ticket, yeah!

I think Chris needs to take a good long look at his health instead of his playing at this point, too many accidents on the last tour, and again he is back to his old ways at the signing showing up late.
Management needs to really give him a good earful and get his act together.
As for a new solo, something from his 1975 fish out of water album, or something from Drama. Then again Tales is a great one too.

You got it right there, Yes Kid. Great choices. I'd toss in 1/2 A World Away from the C2 release. But HOYH would make me go crazy. I love that song.
Hey Swib, may wanna go easy on Chris. Did you see the Regal Cinema acoustic set? Wow. Chris had clearly dropped some major poundage and looked the best I've seen him in years. Looked really good IMHO. And played perfectly. The man loves his "alterations", no doubt, but until the rest of us can create music like he can maybe we shouldn't question his choices. Just a thought.

Earl, I think you have the right idea my man. If he whipped out hold out your hand..people would have to slap me back to conciousness, and that might not even work...I like the idea of a litle snippet(byte??) of whitefish..and to roll into parallels, or lucky seven...as homer would say......D'OH!!!!!!

I think the bass solo should be shortened to 3 or 4 minutes (a really intense attack) leaving enough time for a solo Squire song. My pick for that would be "You By My Side'. I just love his solo album and especially that track.

Anything from that album would be fine.

Here's an idea...
Start off with bass pedals and bass guitar: 'Onward': the entire band playing the song through... At the last deep note, Chris plays the first stanza of Amazing Grace, and then goes completely mad with Alan on a 5 minute version of WhiteFish to leave us spinning...
...Which segues into a full-band version of Silent Wings Of Freedom.
It should be done as one fabric: YES appearing suddenly in the spotlights, already on stage, as the first note of OTSWOF heralds out.
That's the perfect Squire solo.
Make it so!

I'd like to hear the Fragile arrangement of the Fish again. For solo stuff I'd love to hear Silently Falling (probably not a chance with Rick at the keys) or Lucky Seven.

I don't care what he plays,as long as it makes him happy.then i'm happy. I do think we are going to see more Fretless this tour...That acoustic bass and also the Warwick Streamer he uses on Time Is Time.
Well, with the tour over we were not graced with a bass solo. Good. It's just too tired of a "solo". A "solo" is a bit more freeform, but his spot has always been pretty formulaic. I liked it the first time I heard it on the Tormato tour. Since then I don't care to hear it.
Plus, he dropped the "showmanship" schtick down a notch or two. Even better. He was goofing around too much and his playing suffered. This time, the entire band was there to PLAY, not play around. Yes/Squire was never any good at being posers. Musicianship finally was the reason to be on stage.
