I love these polls so I thought we would take a crack at Keystudio. What is your favorite song?

Certainly, it is either Mindrive or That, That is. I voted for the That, That is!

It was a hard decision but I voted for Mind Drive at last. Interesting in my case is, that I really begann to like the other songs first after listening to Keystudio. On KTA I just felt, they are some additions to the live recordings, and the only song I liked very much was Mind Drive. I didn't listen to the other songs too much, I felt they were weak. But after listening to Keystudio, I realised how beautiful the songs like Foot Prints or Bring Me to the Power really are. Isn't this strange?

I voted for "That, that is" and was nicely surprised to see it got more votes than Mind Drive. MD isn't bad, but it is a simpler and, in the end, more predictable song that Tti.

Anyway, those two seem to be the best. Perhaps Be the One, too (I love the "its a long long way from the where the system began" section).

Since I only have Keys 2 I'll vote for Mind Drive. Btw,when will Keystudio be released in the states?

Hey Brian, I got mine at an import music store. They keep it in stock. Check out your local store or check out Nowhearthis.com. They told me that things can be ordered online.

I voted for Sign Language. If I had voted when first released I would have gone for Mind Drive but its losing its appeal to me. It doesn't seem to hold together as well as many of there other epics. Nor does That, That is where a lot of the melodies are incredibly mundane.

I voted for "Foot prints". The reason is that in that particular song i really like Rick's keyboard work.

By the way, i also think that it would'nt be a bad idea if Yes would play one or two tracks from Keys Studio esspecially now they are touring in the same line up with which they recorded those tracks.

What a tough one. Both Mind Drive and That, That Is are my favorites. I like Children of Light and FootPrints as 3rd and 4th.

It's interesting that this thread resurfaced after so much time, on the same day I got this cd. I will get back when I have listened to the whole thing a couple of times, but FootPrints has the early lead.

They're gonna play it next tour!

That's what I hear!

Finally! We heard 'Children Of Light' served-up as an appetizer during the OYE tour.

KTA is the great YES double-album that we have neverheard live... So, anything. I Am Waiting.

"That, That Is" is the better of the two epics.

"Mind Drive" has more flash when listening for the first time, but "That, That Is" has stronger musical merit that satisfies better on repeated listening. Guitar and Keyboards are best on the first one.

It's SO CLOSE, between "Children of Light" and "Mind Drive."

I voted for "Children of Light" because I like the underdog...plus Steve's solo at the end is SO FREAKING TASTY.

My ideal setlist would have the pre-encore section end with "To Be Over," seamlessy going into a few bars of the ending solo on "Children of Light," then the verse/chorus, then an extended jam between Rick and Steve on that ending solo just HOWLING through the venue.

Then they come back and do "Gates" as their encore. I think I'd need a cigarette after that.

Not that fond of the keyboard intro though.

I like this whole album; Keys approaches their best work of the 70s at times.

That, That Is.

I asked Jon in Anaheim this past April about them playing this live. He told me he really likes that song and hasn't been able to convince the rest of the guys to do it... and then added with a wink... "Maybe some day!"

Then he sang "That talk is just a worry and a worry in a man
That life is just a worrying and getting in a mess
That deal is just awakening his spirit to be giving him
The pleasure of the giving things within"

How cool is that!! I think I saw a little bit of heaven right there.

Foot Prints, Bring Me To The Power, and That, That Is are a little too dinky for my taste. Mind Drive is close to the good 70s epics, Sign Language is a nice little tune, and Children Of The Light is indeed a great, though it's a little hesitant (an extremely good closer, though).

I would have voted for Mind Drive, since it's form and sound is reminiscent of the great Yes epics (plus I heard it live in Ft. Lauderdale April 30th!), but my vote went to Be The One. I think it's one of the best songs of post-Drama Yes, without sounding like the older stuff at the same time. It's a unique song that shows the potential of Yes' new sound. Very soulful on the Humankind section, great lyrics, and it rocks without sounding the least bit corny/raunchy. Good new stuff!

Mind Drive

I would have answered differently before this tour. In fact....to be honest, I often skipped this one. I was so blown away by this song in concert that I
I've listened to it 20 or 30 times since April. It's my most often played Yes song right now, but I'm also undergoing a re-discovery of TFTO, and those 4 songs are close behind as I slow down on Mind Drive.

Voting for "Be the One", but only because it seems to be a personal anthem. And it seems to run through my head at various times, especially when I need to be the one and reminded of that fact!
Keystudio is going with me today to the gym and car!

I also find myself gravitating towards "That, That Is."

I know people don't get the lyric about "crack time." If you've ever taken a hit of crack, you'd get it instantly. Instant, timeless addiction. A truly scary drug.

It wanders musically, but I still like it.

Now that's definitely one I can't asnwr. My they are all so great, all true highlights, very powerful songs, maybe except from Sign Language which is nice but not particularly spectacular.
That, that is and Mind Drive probably are my absolute favourites. Incredible songs. Hope they'll play That that is live someday

Bring Me to the Power. Once again, length somehow seems to merit musical quality in this poll. That, That Is and Mind Drive both tread old ground but BMthP has a jazz flavor unlike anything they've ever done. It doesn't sound concocted and it's refreshing to see the band take another direction and continue to be progressive.

It's unfortunate that the two tracks from the original "Keys To Ascension" don't get more votes.

I, personally, think they're the best two of the lot. "That, That Is", in particular, is a much better piece of music than "Mind Drive". I was so disapointed that, after Steve said he'd rehearsed all of the Spanish guitar work on "That, That Is", they included a three part "Mind Drive" on the last tour. Lame.

I too prefer That That Is, over Mind Drive.

I think Footprints, Be The One and Children of Light are the only ones that really work as properly arranged pieces of music in their entirety. (also Sign Language, but that one is not really in the same realm of consideration.) But these would not be my favorites.

Mind Drive, That That Is, and Bring Me To The Power, all contain some incredibly beautiful passages - all have moments that I think are the best things they've done since the 70's - but all three also suffer from arbitrary and disjointed arranging.

The best moments are in TTI and BMTTP. There's that equisitely beautiful passage in BMTTP - Steve's acoustic lines and great arranging of Chris/Alan/Rick, then the excellent vocal parts come in - but then they follow it with the most absolutely stupidist moment of the album!! I always try to catch it with the remote... there's about two seconds to escape having the blissful and inspiring moment trampled on!!

Also the whole opening Steve passage of TTI is really supreme!!!! Far better than the opening passage of Mind Drive IMO.

The thing that turns me off the most about That, That Is (and I think this is what most people have trouble with) is the lyrics. I don't want to hear about "Julie" or her friends and how she "let the baby die". I get that Jon was trying to tell a story and make a point, but it's too difficult to get past. Pity. I truly believe that had the lyrics been different, the song would have been much more popular.

The thing that I favor about it is all of its "real instruments". Steve plays lots of accoustic guitar and, more importantly, Rick plays lots of piano. Not so in "Mind Drive". It's more electric. It's got great stuff, but just doesn't appeal to me as much as its more accoustic, epic counterpart.

Also, Alan's 7/4 opening sequence of "Mind Drive" does nothing for me. I think it's over used in this song and a bit too heavy; most of the blame for this going to Chris's tone. I enjoyed hearing how it was originally used back when Alan and Chris were working with Jimmy Page. It never got developed in to anything, but was still interesting.

As a rule I do like Alan's use of an odd time sigantures. It's like the opening sequence he wrote to "Changes" which is in, what, 17/8 (?). That' a really cool sequence, particularly in the live version where Chris altered his timing from the studio version to create a counter-rhythm to that section's melody. Way fun!
